Devdas (2002)
The best Bollywood Drama I've seen!
This movie is an absolute classic, I have not seen any of the previous versions, so I don't know how they compare, but this is by far the best dramatic Bollywood movie I have seen yet. Although I must say I was a little disappointed to find that the English version of the movie (Featured in the three disc set) was dubbed, and in my opinion rather awkward to watch as the characters lips are moving differently. I would recommend sticking with the original Hindi version of the film.
Great music and superb acting, I also enjoyed the scenery and sets. It's not a movie I would watch all the time though because it's so intense but definitely worth watching once and then every now and again.
Chori Chori (2003)
A story worth seeing again.
A Bollywood version of the 1992 movie HouseSitter (Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn), about a woman who moves into a man, who she barely even knows, house and turns it into her home.
Rani Mukherjee stars as Khushi, a girl who lives all alone in the city of Delhi with her stuffed monkey Jonathan until one day she gets kicked out of her flat by her boss who is angry she has missed to much work. Fortunately at a party she was working at the night before she had met Ranbir (Ajay Devgan) a man whose offer of marriage has just been rejected by his childhood friend Pooja (Sonali Bendre) and has a very large unoccupied house due to that fact.
So Khushi decides to move in and inform everyone, including his family they are engaged. When Ranbir finds out he is angry at first, then the two decide to enter into a business arrangement together, in order for him to win Pooja's heart they ill continue to pretend they are getting married until the right time. Which, of course, ends up in hilarious results, which none of them would have predicted.
I think this movie is definitely worth seeing! Even though at times it is kind of the classic girl likes boy who likes other girl story it is still good and plays out quite nicely.
Baadshah (1999)
An all around good movie!
The story focuses on private detective Raj (Shahrukh Khan) A.k.a Baadshah. He solves several "cases" then gets hired to find the daughter of a famous business man who has been kidnapped. While traveling to find her, with his group of hilarious sidekicks, he gets mistaken for a C.B.I agent whose code name is Baadshah who is on a mission to save Chief Minister Gayetri Bachchan (Rakhee Gulzar) but has already been murdered by a band of thugs working for Suraj Singh Thaper (Amrish Puri) who is financing the assassination attempt.
And then of course there is a love story tossed in the mix between Raj and Seema(Twinkle Khanna) a C.B.I agent involved in the case. Ultimately it all falls on Raj's shoulders can he save the business man's daughter, his friends, and the Chief Minister and get still the girl? Excellent movie SRK does a fabulous job of being serious when you are just busting out laughing!
The only thing I didn't like was that in the version I have, distributed by eros entertainment, there weren't any subtitles on the songs so I had to look them up online bollywhat.com has a list of lyrics.
Bride & Prejudice (2004)
Love It!!!
A film version of Jane Austen's famous novel Pride and Prejudice, an all in all excellent movie, although I don't think it can be compared with some of the other film versions as far as the best adaptation of the novel. So I choose to look at it as it's own separate film loosely based on the novel.
The songs are in my opinion the best part, I loved them, and you will be signing them for days after watching the movie. The acting is good to, especially Aishwarya Rai and her sisters. Then of course there are guest appearances from famous singer Ashanti and Alexis Bledel from the American T.V. Drama Gilmore Girls.
This is an excellent movie. It is the film that first acquainted me with Bollywood an industry that I was sadly unaware of until I watched this movie. And let me just say it was a fabulous film to start with.
