Blitz Wolf (1942)
Tex Avery's first MGM cartoon, and God, I loved it!
In case you haven't seen it, "Blitz Wolf" is a parody of the "The Three Little Pigs" (both the story and Disney cartoon from 8 years earlier), and it's in a World War II theme. Again, there are two younger pigs that are unaware of any incoming danger while there's a smart little piggy that knows Adolf Wolf is coming to invade their land (If he dood it, he get a whippin'!) after giving the other two swines a false peace treaty. After he does invade, he starts a war between him and the three pigs.
As this little gem was directed by the legendary Tex Avery, there lots of gags to be seen here as well as a pretty funny Adolf Hitler impersonation. To me, the funniest part was when Der Fewer (Der Better!) held up a sign that said, "Go on and hiss! Who cares?" Genius.
As this was also the first MGM toon that Avery developed, it's not surprising that many more masterpieces like this from him were made after that for the next 12 years.
Good start for Avery at MGM. 10 stars!
One Froggy Evening (1955)
The Citizen Kane of Animation!
***SPOILER WARNING!!!*** "One Froggy Evening" was a cartoon made in 1955 by Chuck Jones of the Warner Bros. fame. It's about a poor man who's working in a construction lot one day and finds a box with a singing frog inside. The man decides to exploit the frog's talents for his own financial gain, but ends in failure because the frog only sings for its discoverer.
This short is very unique because the only dialogue coming out of this film is the frog's beautiful singing voice. It's very beautifully animated with a good story developed as well. Apparently, it's called the "Citizen Kane of Animated shorts" by Steven Spielberg because it was so funny and vivid, it clearly would deserve the title! Well worth tracking down. It's on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection, Volume 2 DVD, so grab it and watch this cartoon! 5/5 stars.
