Fastlane (2002–2003)
Miami Vice the next generation???
14 February 2003
Fast lane is a great show......Wicked cars, delectable ladies, booming soundtrack and loads of action. The 'backwards' approach to the action is unique and a welcome change from regular cop show fare. (the beginning of each episode is usually the prelude to the climax, then we see how the main characters go to the point. Tiffani Theissen is terrific as the Boss, as are Bill Bellamy and Peter Facinelli who have great on screen chemistry. As great as it is however, it is a blatant rip off (perhaps tribute is a kinder word) of Miami Vice. The pilot episode is the same, check it out: Miami Vice: Undercover drug officer's partner killed.....meanwhile new York undercover cop's brother (also a cop) is killed by same organization. New York Cop (tubbs) comes to Miami to avenge Brother, becomes partners with Miami Cop (Crockett). Substitute Miami with LA and change Crockett and Tubbs to Ray and Deqe. Just an observation....Vice was a great show in it's day and Fastlane is the rightful heir to the throne. Finally a winner from Fox...(it's been a while guys.....)

A touch of old, a touch of new, a taste of what's to come?
5 December 2002
I just saw Die another day in the theatre, and left with a big smile on my face. This is a great film, not the greatest of them, but great nonetheless. I agree with purists that the franchise has taken a touch towards 'the MTV side', but I think it is essential in attracting young viewers who may not grasp the Bond concept. The fact is that Fleming's Bond really never made it to the big screen at all, however Die another Day featured what may be the last of his literary touches. The film opens with 007's in Korea going balls up. There is a riveting hovercraft chase across a minefield and the unfortunate capture of our hero. He is tortured (as he was in the books Casino Royale and Diamonds are forever) and later freed back to M16, who believe he has been brainwashed (This was in Fleming's last novel, The Man with the Golden Gun) After an independent streak of sabotage in Cuba (I don't want to spoil it) He must then prove himself to M and the service (You only live twice) There are plenty of loving tributes to the films such as the scene with Q and Jinx's Honey Rideresque swimsuit. From there, the Bond formula is in play, although somewhat convoluted. Again, I don't want to spoil anything, but it's the 'Dr Evil' type of situation, Villain out to upset the world. Brosnan seems to have really become comfortable in the role, which make some of us older fans what would have been, had he started back in 1987. The gadgets are fantastic, the women sexy as hell and lots and lots of action. There were some things that did make me cringe however; Lee Tamohri may be a fine director of other films, but not for 007. The fight sequences were too 'modern' reminiscent of contemporary martial arts films and the Matrix. I am not a big fan of computer generated special effects, and the para-surf-ski bit in Iceland was embarrassing and unnecessary. Madonna's theme song was not really smooth enough nor grand enough to be worthy of a proper opening. I hope for better next time. In conclusion, Bond is back, and as big as ever. This was the best two hours I've spent in a theater in three years.
