Night of the Demon (1957)
Frightfully delightful 50s horror.
Night of the Demon is about a satanic cult leader named Karswell (Nail Macginnis) who threatens psychologist Dr Holden (Dana Andrews) with summoning a demon if he does not discontinue his investigation into Karswells seemingly phony cult. This movie follows Dr Holden as his scepticism is put to the test as he is faced with Karswells black mgaoc, demons and a nagging sidekick in Peggy Cummins to take these threats seriously, as her uncle faced the same dreadful fate.
You wont find state of the art special effects here, it was the 50s. But what a movie they conjured. Supurb acting, unsettling movie with an intruiging story and some good moments of suspense throughout. Maybe it was the black and white effect that offered a slightly different viewing experience for me, but this movie made me uncomfortable. Which I suppose is precisely the point.
À l'intérieur (2007)
Gory gory gory.
Inside is a French horror film directed by Julien Maury about a recently widowed and, very pregnant woman who is harassed by a psychopath (Beatrice Dalle) who wants her unborn child. Sarah Scarengella (Alysson Paradis), still mourning the death of her husband, has an unwanted visitor with a distressingly large pair of scissors and spends the night preventing the deranged woman access to the womb.
There is plenty here to keep the gore fans happy, this is about as gory as movies get, with some extremely grotesque and unsettling images throughout. Certain scenes are enough to get the most seasoned horror fan squirming. And yet this movie was original, intriguing and suspensful. It delivered what several extreme cinema flicks fail to do. It has a solid plot. I probably wouldnt sit through this again, but if you like gore and suspense, this could be a goer. Bonus points for an incredible score, which really set the mood well.
Happy Death Day (2017)
Suprisingly good
Happy Death Day is an american black comedy/slasher from Christopher Landen. It follows Tree Gelbman (jessica rothe) a spoilt and self absorbed sorority girl who is forced to relive the same day on repeat, which concludes in her being brutally murdered by a psycho in a spooky mask.
If this sounds like Groundhog day with a slasher twist that essentially wraps it up in a nutshell. It even pays homage to the classic Bill Murray film with one or two easter eggs. Happy Death Day exceeds expectations, with comic relief thats actually funny, good character development and vindication of our main protaganist being its redeeming qualities. The story is relatively simple and predictable, it aint going to require too much critical thinking. But I think it achieves its purpose, it is an entertainment film, and I did find this movie thoroughly so.
The Shout (1978)
Just did not resonate with this one.
I am not one to shy away from a weird movie and this one is very weird. I guess the movie is unsettling which is kind of the point, and I applaud the originality, but overall I found this movie to put iy bluntly boring, uneventful and pointless.
Cronos (1992)
Brilliant concept, poor excecution
I loved the ethos behind this movie, however I found the acting to be stale, and the movie just felt a little too dreary for my liking. This movie was only 90 minutes but it felt a lot longer.
Us (2019)
Left me scratching my head
But I suppose that was the point of the movie. Brilliant, full of satire, good pacing throughout the movie, was a little cliche at times and it was possibly a little too open ended. Not without its flaws but I enjoyed this movie.
Friday the 13th (1980)
Not my favourite but respect the origins
We love Jason Vorhees, just didnt love his mother as the main antagonist in this movie. Although I must say, the scene when Jason pulls Alice from the boat is one of the most frighfully delightful momenrs in cinema.
Halloween (1978)
The grandaddy of slashers
A tremendous feat to create such a film with a 300k budget and became one of the most iconic movies of the genre that gave birth to an entire generation of films.
