Evil Dead Rise (2023)

Didn't live up to the hype.

I was really excited to check this out after the initial reaction it got. It seemed like people really liked it but I didn't think it was anything special?

Production quality is good. After you see the twist it's obvious what vibe the director was going for. I don't think it delivered as he hoped and the transfer from one to the other is rough. Without the opening scene and sprinkle at the end, the story has nothing to do with the original cabin in the woods.

The movie could work independently without the franchise relation. I almost wish it wasn't associated, but it wouldn't have gotten half of the attention or the SXSW premiere without the movie name recognition.

Patient Zero (I) (2018)

Surprisingly original and good

I'm not one for zombie/plague/end of society movies but the cast caught my eye. It has its flaws but I was pleasantly surprised by the climax and twists than I thought I would be.

I definitely didn't predict where it was going and that's rare for me. The main cast acting is actually good? I love Stanley Tucci and he did not disappoint. We don't get to see him play a character like this often and he does it well. For 2018, I think this one slid under the radar... either that or I just missed it. You can tell they left the ending open for a sequel, but I think they could have wrapped it with more of a real conclusion and it still would have been fine to move on to a sequel.

Unseen (I) (2023)

Is dumb but not in the good way

While the idea is cool, the execution is poor and aggravating to sit through. The characters are dumb, the plot is dumb, and it's reeeeeeeally slow until the last 20 minutes. It feels like a short someone thought would be a great movie but they didn't change it enough to fit the format.

Who knew you could be gaslit by a stranger over FaceTime? The protagonist takes on the situation with her entire soul despite the fact that this is an absolute stranger who she owes nothing. If most people found themselves in this situation, they would have rolled their eyes and hung up. This is one of those movies that would benefit from a remake.

Wrong Turn (2021)

Good but some snags

I actually liked this one, it's just too long. There are a few scenes we could have all done without and it wouldn't have taken anything away from the story. And there are other bits that would have been awesome to expand on! It needs editing.

It's definitely "cult-y" if that's what you're looking for.

I definitely wasn't expecting that last twist but it was pretty solid. There are so many storylines to follow, it could be a great show.

Most of her buddies sucked, though. For a minute I was worried it was going to turn all "taken" on me but thankfully it didn't.

Safer at Home (2021)

It's not THAT bad

I thought for a quarantine movie this wasn't the worst. The characters were interesting. I watched it a few months ago and remember being surprised by the fact it wasn't awful.

Started out good and interesting

And then about half way through, the story and characters took a turn for the worse. I can't remember which scene did it but there was a point where I audibly groaned because I knew it would be downhill from there.
