Escape from Germany (2024)
As a Mormon....yeah this is pretty bad
I'm a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and I went into this movie expecting and hoping it would be good. Boy was I disappointed.
I think the story that the movie was based is a truly incredible one me and absolutely deserves to be told on the screen...which is why it baffles me that Christiansen managed to drop the ball so hard on this one. The score is honestly pathetic. It plays the same 3 piano pieces over and over and over for the entire movie duration which ended up making the runtime feel double what it actually was. It was hard for me to get invested in the action when there's the one track that they use whenever there's tension playing. It also felt like there were no stakes especially near the end. The entire nazi force is represented by this one German soldier that's randomly hellbent on stopping the missionaries. There's also really no climax to the movie. It just has a montage where he saves the rest of them and then he get to the mission center where the most egregious writing sin happens. "And then everyone clapped" is the is one of the dumbest writing tropes there is and they employed it in the worst way possible at the end by literally having everyone clap. Which brings me to the dialogue. Oh goodness the dialogue. There is just one thing I have to say to anyone reading this that isn't a member of the church: WE DO NOT TALK LIKE THAT!!!! This movie makes it seem like we talk in ridiculous archaic language and always quoting scripture in every other sentence and I hate it. I must assure you we talk like normal people and we talked like normal people did in the '40s.
The Fabelmans (2022)
Spielberg does it again
Steven Spielberg's ability to churn out one great film after another never ceases to amaze me. So it's no surprise that what's essentially his autobiographical film would be great and hold its own with his classics.
Almost all the things you can get right in a film are present in this one. The cinematography is phenomenal (shocking, I know), John Williams gave us another fantastic score (again, shocking), and despite what others may say the acting and casting is amazing. There's not a single weak performance to be found here.
The story may seem like it doesn't have a purpose but as long as we slap the good ol' "slice of life" label on this movie it's completely justified. The family conflicts feel real relatable despite that fact that most people watching this movie aren't filmmakers.
There's only one problem that I have with this movie and that is pacing. I feel like a lot of the time spent on the family could've and should've been spent on Sam and his films.
Tl;dr: Good acting, good cinematography, good score, bad pacing.
The Henry Stickmin Collection (2020)
Candidate for best game of all time
You read the title. This game has no right being this good. The voice acting, almost all of which is done by a SINGLE PERSON, is fantastic giving each character their own charm and personality. The writing is extremely witty to the point where I showed my parents this game and they enjoyed it. Of course the greatest character of all (other than Charles) is the text the appears on the fail screen. I cannot stress how brilliant this is and how much it adds to the game (I won't elaborate here because this would be 30 paragraphs long). I could go on and on about the references and the simple yet fun and effective choices and branching paths system that governs the game but all you need to know is please buy this game. $15 is a bargain because this game is priceless.
Ultimate Chicken Horse (2016)
Absurd and funny, a blast with friends
Before you play this game with your friends, make sure you have a strong relationship with them because this game ends friendships like a blue shell. That being said, this game is a blast. It's very difficult not to enjoy this game even if you aren't very good at it. There's no feeling in the world quite like placing a trap to catch someone only to laugh as it kills everyone instantly. Worth every cent.
