The Golden Girls: Feelings (1990)
TLM references...maybe
This episode aired in October of 1990, about a year after the Disney movie "The Little Mermaid" which guest star Christopher Barnes had done the voice of Prince Eric in, was released, and there are vague references to the film in this episode (or at least interesting coincidences)
Chris' character "Kevin Kelly"
- Liked Minneaoplis because that's where Prince is from.
- Played on the football team for St. Sebastian HS.
- Dorothy's threat was "If Kevin Kelly doesn't play in Saturday's game, Dorothy Z. will sleep with the fishes under the sea ..."
- After "Kevin" broke his leg, Dororthy said tutoring him was like "shooting fish in a barrel."
The First Christmas: The Story of the First Christmas Snow (1975)
A great little story
I just recently saw this special again and it made me realize what a heart warming story it is.
Oh yes little Lucas is blinded in a thunderstorm and is taken in by an Abbey of nuns, one of which as voiced by Angela Landsbury.
I loved how Lucas had to deal with his disability while still being a shepherd, worryng about whether or not he gets to stay at the Abbey, finding the right gift for Angela's nun character, befriending a girl named Louisa, finding his lost sheep, and being in the Christmas pageant, where two miracles happen. What a story!
I loved too how they incorporated not only the typical Christian Christmas story, but also Jesus' Parable of the Lost Sheep from Luke 15:3-7 into the plot-line of his story, which makes it especially special.
If you can find it (and ABC Family often broadcasts this special during their 25 Days of Christmas every December) I think this is one special to watch.
The Green Promise (1949)
Ironies of life
Perhaps if Natalie hadn't broken her wrist, (which wasn't set right and thus left her with a weakened wrist & a bone protrusion) while making this movie, then maybe 32 years later she would've had enough strength to pull herself into the lifeboat on that fateful night in Nov. 1981... Still though it looks like a good movie in a way, and Natalie looked cute in her bunny suit. She was such a cute little girl in so many films. Also it's interesting seeing Walter Brennan in something other that just the old TV show "The Real McCoys." I'll have to see if I can find it again sometime so that I can see all of it again. I'm sure that it is a good rural themed movie to see.
Nestor, the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey (1977)
It hits me too
Oh I know this Christmas special is always a tear jerker as well for me. Poor Nestor the Long Eared Donkey, the first part of the story reminds me of a cross between Dumbo (big ears/oddball) and Bambi (what happened to his mother)! I think I first saw Nestor about the same time I saw Bambi, so I srt of become confused remembering how each's mother died...but still it's sad at that point. Also the poigniant way Roger Miller sang & narrated this program really made it so tear jerking.
I'm glad though Nestor finds a better life as Mary & Joseph's donkey, who carries Mary all the way to Bethlehem, where she then has baby Jesus.
I always loved the Rankin Bass specials that gave the real meaning of Christmas storylines the best anyway.
The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974)
Great special with those "Miser brothers"
Oh I remember I loved this special when I saw it as a kid, and it was great to see it again on cable several years ago after a nearly 20 year gap!
I thought the Miser brothers' songs were great back in the late 70s-early 80s, but seeing that sequence now is so funny. Heat Miser & Snow Miser seemed to be the inspirations for the "battling" Gallagher brothers from the Brit band Oasis, however now I realise how political it was. If you watch it now, you discover that Rankin & Bass made Heat Miser the animatronic representation of RICHARD NIXON and Snow Miser is probably supposed to be Nixon's first VP who resigned before Nixon did himself. The sagging "jowls", the ranting, the fact that it was made in 1974...so it's pretty obvious Heat Miser is Richard Nixon! (If HM had given a "peace/victory sign" then I'd really think so.)
SpaceCamp (1986)
Fanciful indeed & sadly ironic...
I'm not sure if I've actually seen this movie since it was shown on TV in 1986. Anyway the whole concept of 6 or 7 teens launching into space is fanciful indeed, especially with the irony of it all.
For one thing, SpaceCamp was probably filmed before the Challenger Disaster in January 1986, so the fact that the film is copyright 1986 is terribly ironic.
Then later on, when apparently the one guy remembers how shuttle Columbia landed in New Mexico in 1982, then the kids have a successful landing there, comes the second irony. How can one believe these kids could have a successful landing in the film, ironically where Columbia landed in '82, after knowing now how the real Shuttle Columbia disintegrated in the atmosphere upon re-entry on February 1, 2003?
Kids Incorporated (1984)
Yeah I remember it...
Yeah I remember the show some anyway. I do sort of remember watching it on Saturdays or in syndication or something back in the mid 80s, then later seeing it on the Disney Channel previews. (How long did Kids Inc. run, a decade?)
I remember those corny kids and their pop songs, especially the boy who called himself "The Kid"...and who I thought was the person Michael Jackson was referring to in the 1983 song 'Billie Jean'. You know the lyric: "...She said I am the one, but 'The Kid' is not my son..." (although 'The Kid' seemed to act like he was, Jacko. lol)
Anyway what happened to some of the kids after the show? I know Jennifer Love Hewitt went on to 'Party of Five' and other teen/young adult movies, etc. Stacy went on to pop trio 'Wild Orchid', which the only thing I ever saw them do was host this show called "Great Pretenders" (Sat. mornings on ABC Family from 1999-2001) where kids under 18 could lip sync to their favorite pop/rock/or oldies tune, and even dress the part. Someone else mentioned Matinka, and I even noticed Mario Lopez was a dancer on 'Kids Inc.' before he was 'Slater' on 'Saved By The Bell', but what did happen to everyone else? (Obscurity obviously.)
