The Faculty (1998)
What the hell is going on here?
First of all, there are GAPING plot holes in this garbage quality film, and second of all, what a waste of good acting. Yes, it is well-acted, I will give it that -- Elijah Wood, Salma Hayek... But as for the plot. Plot? Yes, there is apparently a plot. It does borrow from the Body Snatchers but gives it credit within the film. It's almost like a tribute to the story. The fact that what is possessing the teachers is something alien is not well depicted. It's just sort of assumed, because nobody knows what these creatures are. It isn't really an alien movie at all -- there is no proof that these things are aliens. They're just weird monsters. And the ending is so cheesy. How the hell does killing the queen kill the rest of the monsters? They had all proved to be independently spreading themselves to new victims,
so why would killing their leader make them all magically just die. Also, how much coke did the main characters do throughout this film just to keep proving to each other that they weren't aliens? PS overdose? They'd be dead by the end of it after doing that much cocaine. This movie makes no sense. It's slightly enjoyable if you watch it just for pure fun and ridiculousness. Oh yea, the special effects are a little cheesy but it was an interesting effort....
Elijah Wood's character is just so damn adorable as well. Watch it, at the very least, for him.
Go (1999)
This film gets better with each viewing
This is a highly underappreciated film, made amazing by its cutting dialogue, witty and sharp realism, and brilliant acting. It's not only an intelligent, humorous film, but it's creative as well, and fast-moving. Overall, it's a wild ride and I would highly recommend it. Its worth might not be determined after the first viewing, because the more I see the film, the better it gets. When I first saw it, I really enjoyed it but dismissed it overall as a film because it seemed "teen" ish,
because of the teen actors (Katie Holmes, Sarah Polley, etc). But that is what is so great about the movie. it's really real. Watch it.. you'll love it.
School's Out! (1992)
A brief overview of a realistic teenage film.
Degrassi School's Out is the wonderful climactic end to the Degrassi series, which was centered around a bunch of regular teenagers going to Degrassi
High School. School's Out is chock-full of drama and heartache, not to mention sex and alcohol. It's actually a really realistic representation of most teens' summers right after graduating from high school. It's also refreshingly natural, everyone looks the age they are supposed to be, and every female isn't some
beauty queen poster girl for breast implants. It's actually altogether quite a poignant film, particularly if you've seen the show that preceded it. It makes you really want to know what happens after it ends. Great movie.
Edgemont (2000)
a brilliant, modern look at the lives of teenagers
If anyone remembers Degrassi, Edgemont is the new Degrassi, only focused on
a smaller cast of characters. The premise is the same: no one set main
character, and a bunch of teens interacting at school and dealing with issues in serious and comedic settings. The show is realistic and reaches out to
teenagers and adolescents -- there are no 'adult' characters on the show
(teachers and parents are not shown). This allows the series to maintain its
unique focus on the kids of A.C. MacKinley high. The show takes place in BC,
Canada, but its concept can be universally translated by any North American
teen. Kristin Kreuk, from Smallville got her start on Edgemont, but there are some other great gems of actors to be found on this show. It is definitely worth taking a look at.

Braindead (1992)
A cheap horror flick that just happens to be directed by Peter Jackson
Being an enormous fan of Heavenly Creatures and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I was definitely excited to see some of Jackson's older work. Dead Alive (Braindead) was the first of his older horror flicks that I got around to watching. After seeing it, I definitely don't think I will be seeing any of the others. There is something sickening about a movie that could very well be one of the goriest films ever made (so it is hailed as by many) that uses its gore for... yes, humor, and not much else. Well, and also to shock. The effects are cheap and amateur, adding to the campy, tacky ridiculousness of the entire ordeal. It seems almost crazy to waste the money and time of those kind of effects though when the intent isnt even to make them scary, it is to make them cheesy and funny. I myself did not find the film very funny. Even though the zombies are very far-fetched, the film seemed to bring this craziness to a normal world, making it slightly unsettling. This is not the intention of the film at all of course, but still, I found certain scenes even disturbing. Such as when Lionel falls through the wall with his mother's corpse in his arms at her funeral. And the embalming scene. Of course it isnt meant to be a real comment on society but it just bothered me. Also, Peter Jackson seems to have a disturbing interest in matricide. What is with this? In the film Heavenly Creatures, based on a true story, Pauline Parker, a fifteen year old girl, murders her mother. After seeing Dead Alive, which was made first (and in it Lionel Cosgrove must kill his zombie mother) I was actually slightly disturbed by the fact that Jackson then went on to do a serious film in which matricide is involved. It actually makes it seem as if there is some perverse interest in it. If it hadnt been for the horror take on this, turning the idea of matricide into a total laughfest, then the interest it wouldn't seem quite so disturbed and twisted. Anyway, if you just love gorey splatterfests that are solely for the sake of fun, is one is for you. If, however, you were looking for anything psychologically stimulating from director Peter Jackson (and if you have a weak stomach), don't look to his older work.

Kissed (1996)
a great movie
I don't think we have to 'see' what is going on. I know what you're saying, but I could figure it out without it being blasted in my face. It was a sexy, erotic, creepy and disturbing film. SEE IT NOW.
Heavenly Creatures (1994)
Absolute fan
This movie has inspired me in so many ways. Not only is the story eerie (it's true!) but the way it is put together is stunning! The visual effects are gorgeous and the cinematography and music as well. The way the film is edited is wonderful. I can watch this film over and over and never get bored. There are always new things to be noticed. The characters are intense and thorough and the plot is dark and intriguing. WATCH THIS MOVIE.
