The Cultural Significance of Sports in America
26 December 2023
Clooney hits the mark beautifully with this film. This is a story about a ragtag group of boys who come together to unify a nation despite the circumstances around it. A story that hard work will beat talent when talent fails to work hard. This movie didn't have the marketing of Aquaman or Wonka but the story is compelling and well told. Edgerton is great, as is the rest of cast. This movie will get you on your feet and make you feel proud to be an American (if you are one). To me, this movie illustrates, similar to Miracle, Remember the Titans or Rocky (albeit fictional) that nothing is more culturally significant to Americans than sports. Consider watching it yourself if you're down for a feel good movie.

Our Lives Are More Connected Than We Think
8 November 2023
There are many things to like about this film. The screenplay, acting and music are phenomenal. The way the timelines weave together through the whole movie is amazing and it brings everything full circle as the film comes to an end.

Iñárritu beautifully and emotionally shows us that the things we do to those we love, those we don't know and those we once knew, matter. Our words and our actions have repercussions beyond what we may see in our lives. The choices of others, and our choices, can make changes that will change lives, take lives or make changes that last generations. Iñárritu uses four, seemingly unrelated families, to teach us about inclusion, love and the consequences of our actions. I love this film and would recommend it to anyone. I would have liked a little more backstory at some parts, but in some ways, leaving out important details and making the viewer make inferences about the situation only adds more power.

Don't Wait. Watch it Now
5 November 2023
Villenueve quickly became one of my favorite filmmakers when I saw Sicario for the first time. The shots are well crafted to help viewers understand the setting and feel as if they are there. Villenueve hits the mark again with Arrival. A beautifully crafted of a short story that I've never read. While unlike other alien movies, I think Arrival captures what it would be like if Aliens really did come to earth. There would be those who only sought to understand them and those who wished to war with them. Villenueve, Adams and Renner do an excellent job at capturing the human experience when we are propelled into the unknown. This film seeks to encourage all of mankind to work together on our common issues, rather than turn off our communications and threaten another. I don't know why I did not see this when it came out, but I wish I had.

Lots of Rising Action, no climax
19 October 2023
If you rate this movie about a 7 you are not a cinema fan. I understand it might be fun for fans of the books to watch because they actually understand what is going on, but for the casual viewer who has not read the boxes, it is extremely difficult to figure out the setting of this story. Once you do manage to piece together enough to understand the plot, then you have to wait another hour for the plot to continue to thicken and build to...absolutely nothing. There is no climax of this movie. The end is very underwhelming. I understand that it is supposed to be a series and that the events of the second movie will take place after the first one. That being said, other series which like LOTR and Star Wars, which Dune claimed to be the successor to, actually had functional plots that had a climax that was built up to and the ending of each movie satisfied the viewer. From a director that I love such as Villenueve, I expected a climax similar to that of Prisoners or Sicario. Instead I got nothing. This movie is intriguing but if you do sit down to watch it, don't expect too much in return.
