Resident Evil (2002)
RESIDENT EVIL IS PURE CINEMA!!!!!!!!!!!!
15 March 2002
In a relentless non-stop action film like this....plot and characters are secondary to thrills and chills....of which this film is loaded with.Milla Jovovich kicks some serious butt....the movie although not entirely faithful to the game is an AMAZING adaptation that will please fans of the game and horror genre....this is the ONLY horror in recent years that actually had the audience jumping and SCREAMING and laughing. The ending pull back tracking shot was breathless and leaves it open for a sequel that should introduce NEMESIS?......this film was a hodge-podge of scenes and situations from other films in the zombie genre but the unique set design (The Red Queen's LASER and the sequence with the DEVIL DOGS were SPECTACULAR).entertaining edge of your seat thrills.....much better and more satisfying than all those HIGH-Brow Academy AWARD contenders (Except for maybe AMELIE).CAN'T WAIT FOR THE DVD OF THIS ONE...or THE SEQUEL....JILL VALENTINE should be introduced in that one and JENNIFER ESPOSITO would be awesome as JILL...check out her audition for the role in the lame movie the BACHELOR...she was SEXY and TOUGH. MILLA JOVOVICH and JENNIFER ESPOSITO.....that pair is worth any money to see.Maybe even a subplot where Milla falls for JENNIFER...hmmmm! They don't need men to save them.

Volaverunt (1999)
Lavish,Epic production from Bigas Luna
13 December 2001
Juan Jose Bigas Luna is best known in the U.S. for Jamon,Jamon.....a sexy film which gave Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem international acclaim. Now we have this uniquely restrained film for the director,a lavish costume drama full of passion and intrigue.Featuring many actors from his previous films it centers around the mystery of the real model for Goya's The Naked Maya and the death of the Duchess of Alba. This is more a woman's film as they are the stronger more defined characters... Penelope Cruz is electric and Aitana Sanchez Gijon (Former president of the actors guild)has never been sharper or more powerful. The sparks between the two actresses especially during a Paso Doble, duel of wills jumps off the screen. This film has yet to find American distribution but has played the festival circuit.

A BRILLIANT MASTERPIECE
10 December 2001
There is not much I can add to the excellent comments of the previous user except that I as well was moved beyond belief by the raw emotions and incredible restraint exhibited by the director. What could have easily become a weepy tearjerker, instead is a transcendent, humanist story of two souls that share a common bond. The husband. This leads to some bitter confrontations with each moment a layer being removed so that the characters can grieve together. The character of the mother was FABULOUS....the character of Ernesto was not only HANDSOME!but fully realized. This film touched me on so many levels that I am at a loss for words...I hope that this film finds a major distribution company that can place it in many cinemas(The directors previous film Haman-The turkish bath was horribly exploited by Strand Releasing,They renamed it Steam and tried to market the sexual aspects of the film)....I feel EVERYONE should make an effort to see this movie.Like the previous user it left me dazzled.
