A Man in Full (2024)
Unconvincing!
The story has a lot of inaccuracies but if you get past them it's an interesting one. The problem is the unconvincing cast. Even the talented and experienced Diane Lane seems like fish out of the water. I am not sure what's the problem but she is not Diane Lane. The way she acts , she could be any untalented bit good professional actor. The same is more or less true for everyone in the series. Jeff Daniels tries hard to get in the shoes of the role but he is unconvincing. He acts more like a sloppy highschool bully than a succesful bussinessman that convinced the banks to give him a 1.2 billion dollars loan.
There is something wrong with all the characters. Something unconvincing. His much younger wife seems like a trophy wife but acts like a loving caring wife of a guy that is disgusting in almost everything he does. He cares only for himself. You can't present a woman loving a guy that has nothing loveable on him. Or you can?
The problem with unconvincing series like this is that everything seems not to make sense and sometimes I find myself wondering about the tiny details. Things I wouldn't have noticed in another series become thorns in your mind when the inaccuracies start to stack.
The other problem with unconvincing series or movies is that I have a hard time relate with a character. I really couldn't care less if they all drop dead in the end , struck from an unknown virus or an alien attack. Even the likeable and sympathetic Conrand seems not to belong in this series and his story looks more like a way to fill the time gaps than an effort to make us care for someone.
Still , if you have nothing else to do , watching it is not a total waste of time. It's a good example of how a potentialy good show can become unconvincing with the wrong cast and the wrong director.
Clique (2017)
When a story desperately tries to convince you that it is a story.
The problem with Clique is that it desperately tries to be a story but there is actually no story and it despetately tries to be a mystery when there is no mystery.
The main hero, Holy, is initially obsessed with her best friend. She actually takes the word obsessed to a whole new level. Soon a second obsession is born. She becomes obsessed with a mystery when there is no sign that there is one. An upset successful financial intern is enough to convince her that something is terribly wrong. Why? Because interns in financial institutes must be only happy. Any sign of unhappiness is a sign that something is terribly wrong. It's a sign of corruption and conspiracy that goes all the way up to highest rankings of police and government. In the meantime she has sex with the guy that her best friend likes!!! Why? We don't know and the funny is that she doesn't know either. I am quite sure not even the writer knows. For unknown reasons she decided to break up with him only to find herself with a new obsession. A new "object of desire". A young attractive guy with whom she has hot sex and they both fall madly in love with each other. The young attractive guy proves to be an undercover police agent investigating the financial institute for more than 2 years and he decides to reveal his true identity although he just met her! Add to that a young girl that has everyone in her pocket( even the big banker with Mafia connections) and for some unexplainable reason no one can touch her. Oh , she is also obsessed with Holy. It is what makes her do everything she does. Yes , it's not money , it's not power. It's her obsession with the woman that is also obsessed with another woman. And here comes the best. Holy is unstoppable when there is no mystery, when everyone tells her to back off because there is nothing there but suddenly collapses when the mystery is finally revealed.
The problem of the show is not only the totally unbelievable story , it's also the totally unbelievable characters. It is impossible to connect with any of them because it is impossible to understand or even justify their reactions
If all the story and character inconsistencies and irrationalities don't bother you this is a 10/10 show for you. For all the rest looking for something just slightly believable , try Harry Potter.

L'effondrement (2019)
Worths watching!
The episodes of this tv series talk about the collapse of the system. Money worth nothing and people fight for gas and food trying to survive. So far so good!
The "problem" is that everything is extremely predictable. What do you expect that will happen if the system collapses? People in panic , killing each other for food and gas, right? Well , exactly that is happening. There is no originality. Nothing in the story that justifies making a tv show. They have nothing new to say , they just repeat things we have already seen in all post apocalyptic shows and films.
But is that necessarily bad? I am not sure. There is a documanteristic feel in the episodes that make you think that you are watching the news and not a tv show and the fact that nothing unpredictable happens makes that feel even more intense. You feel like these are real people, out there fighting for their lives! You feel like it's something that is happening now. For that feel alone it's a show worth watching. It's a show that tries to be real in an era when every show tries to be as fake as possible. That is its originality. That is its justification!
