Douches froides (2005)
A solid showing all around
I don't comment usually, so my review's probably not going to be too helpful, but I figure the comment list is currently empty, so...
I just saw this at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday (with English subtitles) and can say that this is a very good film with excellent performances from its young leads. Johan (I can't remember how to spell his last name, so I won't try) does an excellent job of portraying the depth and complexity of Mickael and the film rarely (if ever) seems overly dramatic. While some of the smaller roles, such as Mickael's family, seem like they could use a tad more rounding out, the story is ultimately made very emotionally engaging. The nudity is plentiful (for my American background, anyway) but most of these scenes earn their place in the film with their overwhelming effectiveness. I'd like to give it a 7.5, but IMDb won't allow decimals.
Following (1998)
All style, no sensibility
CAUTION! There's kind of a spoiler in here. I don't think it'll ruin the movie, but if you want to really watch the film with no expectations, I would stop reading now I don't want to take too long here, as most of the other comments have documented the strengths of this film quite well (and it does have many strengths). Overall, I found this to be a solid, interesting movie, but my major complaint is that the entire plot seemed way too silly. I don't see any reason why Cobb would create such an elaborate plan to do what he did. It seemed to me that Nolan just set up this story as a way to show off his directorial/writing talents rather than to really tell a story. This wasn't nearly as interesting or emotionally-appealing as Memento. I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
The Fast and the Furious (2001)
What were my friends thinking?
Many of my friends have been talking about how great this movie was, and I just want to know what were they thinking. This is a terrible piece of flavor-of-the-week tripe feeding off of pop cultures latest trends. It has terrible acting and worse writing. Unless you're really in to import tuners there are no redeeming qualities to this movie.
