Velma (2023)
An Award Is In Order If You Sit Through The First Episode
The first episode of this show was so all over the place and downright awful that I had to review it here. Some light chuckles throughout the 25-ish minute travesty...but that's about it. It's a show with absolutely no direction or identity...probably a lot like this review. HBO Max has to hire better focus group participants so shows like this never see the light of day. It's one cringeworthy scene after another. If you have a free 25 minutes and like to torture yourself, then this show is for you! When you think the worst is over with, it gets much, much, much, much, worse. I'd read a book instead.
Halloween Ends (2022)
Barely a "Halloween" movie
The reboot/remake of this franchise was promising. Kills was alright. Ends was damn near atrocious. We go almost half the movie without seeing Michael Myers. Laurie seems to be more of an afterthought in this installment. No suspense, no twists, muted killings, and a lot less Michael Myers than the previous two movies in the trilogy. The only redeeming quality this movie has is the protagonists finally dispose of Michael's lifeless body properly so he doesn't return to haunt Haddonfield anymore. I kept waiting for it to get better, but this movie is a stinker. Guess I'll wait 40 years for the next let down of a reboot.
Orphan Black: Certain Agony of the Battlefield (2015)
Still my favorite TV episode
I still think about this episode years after first watching it. Tatiana Maslany was spectacular in getting me to feel bad for Sarah. It was intense, emotional, and heartwarming. Just incredible television.
Ozark: A Hard Way to Go (2022)
Great ending
Once again, the Byrdes land on their feet. The whole series was summed up at the final scene. It was a nice little bow to wrap up an amazing series. I also like the ambiguity of the ending. Did Jonah shoot Mel, shoot Wendy, or just shoot up in the air. I feel like Jonah never reconciled with his mother, so maybe he just shot he then and there, or shot in the air so his parents would finally be held accountable for their actions. I think Jonah shooting Mel is the logical outcome...he's becoming just like his parents. Family first no matter who you have to betray and/or kill.
Family Guy: Prescription Heroine (2022)
Family Guy is routinely funny
My personal favorite of the season. Loved the "mom, mom, mommy" call back with the roles reversed. I like the relationship between Lois and Brian, as well as the buddy B-story with the ping-pong table.
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
"Fans" don't get it
Yes, I'm being a little condescending in the title, only because it's kind of true. From episode 1, we pondered what kind of person Dexter is. Is he good doing good, good doing bad, bad doing good, or bad doing bad? We unequivocally have our answer. Dexter has indirectly killed several innocent people who did not fit the second rule of the code. In the finale, he directly kills an innocent man (Logan) while trying to escape prison. He did this because he had to follow rule number one of the code, don't get caught. Dexter knew his goose was cooked when Angela dropped the Batista bombshell on him. Now his "morality" is thrown out the window. Now he'll do anything to escape the needle.
Harrison, now knowing the code, follows it by killing his father. Harrison sees the evil in Dexter and knows leaving to LA will not fix his issues. Living and killing with Dexter will not fix his issues. Harrison has shown more compassion and empathy than Dexter could ever dream of.
I hope Harrison finds is own way, through therapy and other healthier coping mechanisms. I don't necessarily want a Harrison centered spin-spin-off. These negative reviews are fans butthurt there won't be any more Dexter. But this is the way the show had to end. I thought it was very fitting. You can nitpick the plot holes and whatnot, but Dexter dying was the only way to end it, because we got so mad when we found out he was alive after driving his boat into Hurricane Laura.
I hope this goes down as a satisfying ending once people get over the grief of losing one hell of a TV character.
