The Big Year (2011)
I LOVE BIRDS AND MOVIES ABOUT BIRDS
Hands down, without doubt, and no questions asked Owen Wilson, Jack Black, and the GREAT Steve Martin are three of the most talented actors in our lifetime. This movie actually has several talented actors that in my opinion make this movie a wonderful escape from the real world. No politics, no pandering to any special interest groups, no superfluous sex scenes. Just a wonderful story.
The scenery and travel throughout the film are wonderful. Is some of it unrealistic? Maybe, but who cares? The fact the movie is loosely based off of a true story makes my heart happy knowing that these three men were out there scouring North America looking for, of all things, different species of birds. If you really want to know the intricate details of the actual humans that did this, read the book. The Big Year by Mark Obmascik is fantastic. I promise, you won't be disappointed. A great read.
This movie does a great job of tugging at the heart strings, providing a bit of anxiety, and then that feel good feeling in the end. It would be wonderful if the real world was as simple as the one portrayed in this movie.
Also, I'm thankful the producers didn't mock the world of birding. Something that can be done by just looking out a window from your home. Watch this movie, download or buy a field guide, and get out there and enjoy all the different birds in our world.

This movie hurt my heart
Writing this review for a movie with Owen Wilson in it could quite possibly be one of the saddest things I've ever done...in my life. Owen Wilson is hands down one of my favorite actors. If he is in the movie I'm going to watch it. Does that make me crazier than a road lizard? Maybe, just maybe.
The pace of the movie? Slow. The dialogue of the movie? Slow and inadequate. The plot of the movie? Could have been so much better and that's where this review really and I mean really hurts. If you're going to pay homage to the great Bob Ross, then do it. Don't make a half-hearted seemingly low budget knock off. The great Bob Ross deserves that at a minimum.
The cast of the movie? Some incredible talent in this movie. Not just Wilson, but the entire ensemble is loaded with the gift to act. It's a shame and almost an insult to the cast the plot was vacant.
Something I loved about the movie? The songs. John Denver, Gordan Lightfoot, Heart, Dolly Pardon and Kris Kristofferson. Great choices
I'm sorry Owen, there was just no "WOW" in this one.
Little Wing (2024)
An original and fun story
What a fun movie with a unique story line. What a future for the young actor, Brooklyn Prince. I sincerely hope one day when she looks back on this movie she appreciates the fact she was able to act in a movie with Brian Cox. One of my favorite actors of all time. He doesn't pull his acting chops for a moment in this movie either.
Some of these scenes were intense too. The young lady held her own. I can't believe how well this movie was done. I love when a creator takes a subject that we wouldn't think about in our daily lives. Pigeon racing. What? And oh my goodness the cinematography in one of the last scenes (don't want to be a spoiler) is phenomenal. Seriously, breathtaking work.
I know I mentioned Brian Cox, he's one of my all time favorite actors, but can't forget Kelly Reilly's performance is amazing also. Being able to step away from her Yellowstone role and play a softer side of the human condition was a pleasant surprise.
Country Christmas Album (2018)
Just a nice feel good movie for the holiday
Wow, some of the reviews on this movie are harsh. Some of you are really just mean people. Greatest movie ever made? Maybe not, but it's not the worst either. Evan Gamble is never going to be mistaken for Johnny Cash, but I really don't think that's his goal either. We liked the movie. Is there anything better than cheesy Christmas movies playing during this time of year. No, no there is not. Put the movie on, turn the oven on, bake some cookies, and enjoy the season. If your goal is take in the next great cinematic master piece then maybe, just maybe head to the nearest theater, grab some popcorn, one of those super duper sized soft drinks, sit back, and enjoy. The rest of us will enjoy the feel good stories that movies like Country Christmas Album provide.
Have a great day everyone and Merry Christmas!
Longest Third Date (2023)
Warms the heart!
My wife and I are professional photographers and when we edit our images we put something on that we just sorta have to pay attention to. This freaking documentary locked us in. We seriously can't wait for the movie to come out. I'm sure their were some awkward and not so fun times during their time in Costa Rica, but man what a fantastic outcome. My wife and I both said at the end of this if they're not boyfriend/girlfriend we're going to be upset. Then we started guessing who is going to portray them when the movie version of this story comes out. She threw out several names and all I had was Bradley Cooper for Matt, but he may be too old now. LOL. Anyway, what a great story. Hoping they stay together forever :)
Nate Bargatze: The Tennessee Kid (2019)
Holy Moly! This guy is funny!
My wife and I had not heard of Nick, but saw a clip from his show on Netflix. Decided to give him a try and oh my goodness this was one of the funniest comics ever. By the time we got to the end we had to pause the show because we were crying laughing and my sides hurt from laughing so hard. First thing we did following the show was look up more specials with him. We would love to see this guy live. It's unbelievable to me this guy is not more popular. I'm sure that is about to change, this Nick is too funny to be kept out of the mainstream for very much longer. I literally cannot drive past a Starbucks without laughing now. The world needs more Nick!!!
Christmas with the Campbells (2022)
It's not satire, it's just terrible
I love Vince Vaughn and was hoping this would be a great movie. Vince, my man, you really need to evolve. As a Navy veteran I've heard my share of profanity, but profanity just for the sake of it is just pointless and disrupts any point trying to be made. The plot? What plot? As if a girl who just got dumped would actually visit the family of the guy who just dumped her. Please. Brittany Snow is great, but even she couldn't carry this terrible attempt at "entertainment". Big swing and a miss here. What's sad here is there really is an opportunity for something like this to be good. Best of luck to Vince and Pete going forward. You simply failed here.
