A Masterpiece...
12 March 2015
Ugly is one of the finest Bollywood movie I have seen in my life. The story seems to be pretty simple but it is really intriguing and keeps you hooked. Anurag Kashyap is among the finest Indian Directors and this movie proves that he is a master story teller who can do wonders with his ability. He is sometimes criticized for making dark movies but the way he depicts reality is simply amazing and leaves a big impression on the audience. All the actors in Ugly have given fine performance and the background music also adds depth and character to the movie. If we can have even five more film makers like Anurag Kashyap we can feel proud of our film industry which is currently borrowing most of its ideas and stories from Hollywood movies...

A Fine Movie
7 March 2015
Arlington Road was a real surprise for me and I did not expect this movie to turn out the way it did. Jeff Bridges is one of the best actors in Hollywood and he has played some really memorable characters in his career. Tim Robbins has always intrigued me as an actor and in this movie also he has given a really fine performance. The movie is pretty relevant as we are living in a world where we can not take anything for granted. There are some important questions and issues raised by this movie that a lot of people need to introspect about. The way things have happened in many countries across the world we can never be sure from where the next enemy may be coming from. For this thing alone I feel Arlington Road is a movie worth watching...

Worth a Watch
24 February 2015
The Guest is an intriguing movie in more than one way and I really liked it. The good thing is that it keeps you on the edge for most of the time and this works in its favor. The performance of most of the characters is pretty convincing and the music is one of the high points of this movie. The Director of this movie needs to be commended for taking a pretty unique plot and he does justice to the story. The lead character of David is a pretty interesting character and his performance is also one of the highlights in this movie. The outdoor scenes in this movie are also shot in a really nice manner and enhance the overall appeal of the movie. This is a thriller you will not regret watching and will leave you asking for more...

Truth is Stranger than Fiction
22 February 2015
Fargo is one of those movies that are simply unforgettable. Coen brothers have made many good movies but Fargo is one of their biggest achievements. This movie has everything needed to make a movie interesting and compelling for the audience. The outdoor shots in this movie are simply breath taking and the landscape has been captured in a very captivating manner. Strong performances by most of the characters is also one of the big strengths of this movie and the music certainly enhances the overall impact and appeal. The best thing about Fargo is that one can see this movie more than once without feeling impatient even for a moment. This is something that can hardly be said about most of the movies.

A Movie Worth Remembering
22 February 2015
Kevin Costner is really one of the most enigmatic personalities in Hollywood. He is someone who has made some remarkable movies and then all of a sudden vanishes altogether. Open Range is one such movie that has been made with a fine eye for detail and the camera work in this movie is pretty nice. The performances by Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner are also pretty good and a bit understated. The good thing about this movie is that it is a proper Western that captures the beauty of the countryside in an impressive manner. The performance of most of the characters in this movie is good and it reminded me a bit about Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. I really liked the movie and can easily recommend it to anyone who wants to watch a nice Western that will stay in one's mind for a long time...

An Unforgettable Movie
18 March 2013
Sunset Boulevard is easily one of the finest movies of all time. Billy Wilder shows a mirror to Hollywood and all the old stars who refuse to accept the reality and still try to live on their past deeds. All the people associated with the entertainment industry are guilty of this thing at some or the other point in their life. The performances of most of the actors in this movie are quite convincing. It has got an authentic feel that certainly adds to the appeal of the movie. The climatic scene will surely stay in the mind of any viewer for a long time after he has seen this finely crafted and well made piece of art. This is surely one of the finest movies that have been directed by Billy Wilder.

A Nice Watch
24 August 2012
After the success of Gone Baby Gone, this is the second movie by Ben Affleck. The movie is good in bits and parts but on the whole it fails to live up to its promise. Though it is still much better from most of the other movies that have been released this year, it is not as edgy and thrilling as Ben Affleck's directorial debut. The best performances in this movie are given by Claire(Rebecca Hall), James (Renner) and Krista (Blake Lively). It could have been another memorable movie if it was handled in a better manner. A good thing about the movie is its music that is one of the highlights. Ben Affleck needs to make sure that his movies are edited in a better manner as that will do real justice to his talent as a good Director.

A Real Gem
7 July 2012
I have always been fascinated by David Lynch and his intriguing work in movies. He is way different from others but this movie is a real gem. The main character Alvin assures us that we can overcome our mistakes and take the correct decision. Another good thing about this movie is the nice way in which he is able to meet and get along with strangers. This may be considered a taboo but this is a nice way to meet new people and appreciate them. The performance of other characters is also nice and the way this movie has been shot is really captivating. It is a fact that even an unusual story in the hands of a capable Director can bring joy to anyone. It is an appropriate movie to catch on a weekend and feel great about life and its gifts.

Much Better Than Others
24 January 2012
Coriolanus proves once again what I have always felt about Ralph Fiennes. He is not only a great actor but someone who is capable of doing so much more. Thankfully he has shown glimpses of that in Coriolanus. The movie certainly has its flaws but on the whole it is much better that what the others are peddling currently as movies. I personally feel that Ralph Fiennes needs at least a couple of more movies to mature and after that his talent as a Director can come to fruition. It felt nice to watch a well made action movie after such a long time. The performances of Vanessa Redgrave and Fiennes are impressive but Gerald Butler like always disappoints.

An Old Gem Worth Appreciating
6 December 2011
I saw this movie recently and found it really charming. Robert Mitchum has played his character very smoothly and in a nice manner. The children and especially Pearl is one of most beautiful child that have ever been shown on the screen. A nice script and superb camera-work are also strong points of this movie. One of things that I really liked about this movie is that it boasts of some memorable characters. The characters of Birdie and Lillian Gish have been sketched in a very nice and impressive manner. Good music is also one of the strong points of this movie. This is one movie that is hard to forget and the theme music and voice of Robert Mitchum can resonate for a long time in your mind after you have seen this movie.

Another nice movie from Eastwood
24 December 2010
There are many movies that are based on the same theme and some of them are even difficult to remember. But the credit for this nice movie must go to Clint Eastwood in the manner he has handled the familiar theme. Costner once again plays an unforgettable character and the performance by the small boy is also very good. The relationship between Costner and Phillip proves that even a convict can raise a child correctly if he knows how to handle a child properly. Costner treats the child with love and respect and this is something most of the parents can learn from this movie.

Eastwood also avoids too much focus on his own character and this is also one of the strong points of this movie. He deserves a lot more credit than he gets and this film once again proves that even a routine story can be made into a very nice movie if it is in the hands of an able director like Clint Eastwood.

12 Angry Men (1957)

A cerebral experience
13 November 2010
This movie proves that a good story and a tight script are more important than any other thing for a movie to succeed. Sidney Lumet was already experienced when he directed this movie but still 12 Angry Men is an amazing first film. Henry Fonda is the main dissenter from the jury who tries to convince others that the case is not as simple as it appears. Joseph Sweeney who plays the role of the old man also does a remarkable job. The movie proves that a defendant has the right to a fair trial regardless of his social or economic status. I wish this movie could be shown in every law school so that lawyers and judges can understand the gravity and importance of their decisions. The movie is more than 50 years old but still feels fresh and is also a must watch for anyone who loves good cinema and for people interested in film making. This is also a perfect example of a simple yet powerful movie that will stay in the minds of the audiences. I can bet that anyone who has seen this movie will not be able to forget it easily.

A movie well ahead of its times
11 November 2010
It is remarkable that Ace In the Hole was released in the year 1951 and still feels so fresh. The movie is a telling indictment of the media and the ways it uses to sell a story and gain publicity. Kirk Douglas as Chuck Tatum brings a kind of raw energy into his role that is rarely seen. This performance is no doubt one of his finest as an actor. Billy Wilder has chosen a very poignant yet telling plot for this movie. His vision and direction are extra ordinary. Today it is routine for media to garner mileage from horrific events and they rarely bother if people have died or are seriously hurt. It is very sad that bad events and news are given so much coverage and prominence by the media across the world. The movie is almost six decades old but still startles us with its boldness and frankness. I will rate Ace In the Hole as one of the finest movies ever made and anyone who wants to see an exquisitely made movie must experience it.

An unforgettable movie
8 November 2010
The Shawshank Redemption is easily one of the best movies ever made.It is a simple yet powerful story that really touches your heart. The strength of this movie lies in the fact that the director does not use anything flashy to entice the viewers in this movie. The music by Thomas Newman adds depth and character to the movie and certainly enhances the overall appeal of the movie. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman prove that good acting trumps over everything else. Frank Darabont also deserves a lot of credit for his direction. It does not feel that this is his first movie. The cinematography of this movie is also excellent and Roger Deakins has done a wonderful job. The biggest strength of this movie is that it tells us to be brave in adverse times and not lose hope even in bad times. We can learn a valuable lesson from this movie and also realize the value of patience. Anyone who has seen this movie will agree with me and most of the people will love to see The Shawshank Redemption again.

Another gem from Roman Polanski
8 November 2010
Polanski has always been a great director and his art and genius is unmatched. There are very few directors who can match him and he is a force to reckon with. In this movie, Polanski provides ample proof of the horrors of holocaust. Adrien Brody confirms that he is an actor with more than just good looks. The movie also won the Best Director Academy Award for Polanski which was long due. The biggest strength of this movie is that it does not try to take any sides. Only a great director like Polanski could have made such a heart touching and sensitive movie. The movie once again confirms why good cinema is so essential for our society and it needs to be treasured for the coming generations. Hollywood can say whatever it wants to say, they still do not have a film maker as good as Roman Polanski.

It tickles your grey cells
4 November 2010
There are very few movies which force you to think what is right and what is wrong. But after watching this movie most of us will be forced to think about the situation depicted in this movie. Ben Affleck impresses in his directorial debut and his younger brother carries his role well. The way Boston is captured on the camera is very captivating. It can be said that the character of the city has been shown really well in the movie. A strong cast of actors also works in its favor. But the biggest question that this movie raises is whom you can trust and who you can not. For this thing alone, Gone Baby Gone is an intriguing movie and will surely stay in the viewer's mind for a long time.

One of the best romantic movies of all time
28 October 2010
Eastwood is easily one of the best filmmakers of our times and this movie proves this fact. Many may call him nothing more than an old cowboy trying to do experimental cinema. But he proves that he is a master of his craft in this movie. Everything in this movie leaves an impression on you. The plot, screenplay, soundtrack and cinematography are done in a manner that leaves you in a daze. I never expected that Eastwood could direct such a forceful romantic movie. This movie can easily rank among the best romantic movies of all time. It is strange but a true fact that Dirty Harry could give such a balanced and heart touching finish to the novel written by Robert James Waller. The casting is also excellent and once again proves that for a good actor age is just a number as both Eastwood and Meryl Streep give very fine performances. I will recommend this movie to every person who loves good cinema and wants to see a very finely made romantic movie.

A well made movie that is like a breath of fresh air
28 October 2010
Very few movies are made with so much attention to detail. Kevin Costner deserves wholesome praise for this movie. It is one of those rare movies that takes a look at American Indians as human beings. Indians are also a fiercely proud and brave race. But in most of the movies they are revealed as savages and thieves. But it is different in Dances With Wolves. For his first movie, Costner impresses a lot. The camera work and direction are absolutely breathtaking. It is very difficult to understand that such an honestly and well made movie is not listed in IMDb Top 250. There are many stupid movies listed there but not this awesome and touching movie. This movie will always be among my favorites. A rare masterpiece that succeeds on more than one level.
