Batman: The Movie (1966)
Batman as he should be seen
Batman is a cartoon character and THIS movie is just that. This is how serious Batman should be taken. The movie is wonderful, funny, witty and very "tongue in cheek" which is why i love it. The later versions tries to take Batman serious and fails miserably in my humble opinion. Michael Keatons Batman was acceptable but the later versions are horrible. The "some days you just cant get rid of a bomb"-scene is a classic in movie history and has been spoofed in several other movies.
The special effects are 60's style but really that just ties neatly in with the rest of the movie. The props are really wonderful. As another reviewer pointed out, EVERYTHING the dynamic duo uses are "Bat - something" one wonders if the batcave also contains a "Batlavatory" but off course it does. The car was an old concept car designed by Ford and called the "Ford Futura". I remember seeing it in an old "Popular Mechanics" i inherited from my uncle and thinking "ohh that's where they got it". It is everything a batmobile should be. The "Batmotorcycle" with detaching go-cart is also a brilliant idea.
The only sad thing about this movie is that it was before Yvonne Craig was introduced in the series at Batgirl, i would have loved to see her together with the Dynamic Duo.
IF you have a sense of Humor you will love this movie, if not, don't bother...
Ice Station Zebra (1968)
Why oh why?
Why is it that Hollywood have such a problem with scripts? What is the horror of making a movie that actually has the same story as the book it took it's title from? This MIGHT be a good movie provided that you haven't read the book but if you have, -don't bother.
The really good plot from the book that makes it impossible to put down the book until you have finished it is here transformed into a sad action caper with actors playing stereotypes.
Sorry but i really don't like this movie. The only DECENT McLean film is "Where Eagles Dare", probably because he wrote the book AFTER the script for the movie.
