Oppenheimer (2023)
If you enjoy Nolan and the film Air
A group of men in suits in different rooms arguing about the ethics surrounding the invention of the A bomb. The music, sound and absent of sound are marvellous depictions about the stresses of working on projects that are bigger than the ego. Yes the A bomb was awful and catastrophic but perhaps it served as a greater good invention required at the time. Was Oppenheimmer a good man? No one is truly good but just as in all businesses especially government, people can make you just as much as they can also break you. The symbolic ripples throughout, matched with the fast paced dialogue and glimpses of foreshadowing will leave you pondering did I just watch another rendition of Macbeth?
Air (2023)
AIR: Revolutionising the Documentary Genre
The documentary genre is undergoing a transformative revolution, and "AIR" stands at the forefront of this movement. Based on true events surrounding the launch of Air Jordan, the film embarks on a captivating journey, exploring the themes of perseverance, risk-taking, and the triumph of the underdog. It challenges the notion of how to tell a compelling story when the ending is already known, highlighting the enduring impact of those who dare to break the rules.
Technologies: Behind the scenes, "AIR" harnesses the power of advanced camera technology, cutting-edge editing software, and meticulous lighting and sound techniques. These elements seamlessly come together to create a visually stunning and immersive documentary experience.
Representations: Set against the backdrop of the 1984 era, "AIR" pays homage to the iconic 80s style, bringing to life nostalgic costumes and vivid male representations from that period. The story follows Deloris Jordan, the mother of Michael Jordan and a central figure who symbolizes the triumph over the capitalist machine, representing economic empowerment. Notable actors such as Ben Affleck, who also serves as the film's director, portrays Phil Knight, the CEO of Nike, while Jason Bateman embodies Rob Strasser, the marketing director with a poignant personal story. Chris Tucker takes on the role of Howard White, the vice president of Nike. The protagonist, Sonny Vacaro, a risk-taking gambler, is portrayed by Matt Damon, delivering a powerful speech about immortality. Chris Messina plays David Falk, Jordan's agent. Interestingly, while the documentary revolves around Air Jordan, the man himself never makes an appearance. The film captures authentic interactions in mundane locations, grounding the story in relatability.
Audiences: "AIR" appeals to a wide range of audiences, including those who experienced the 80s era firsthand, business professionals, male viewers, basketball enthusiasts, fans of historical drama, and individuals who appreciate sportswear and sneakers. It aims to captivate viewers through its exploration of a significant cultural moment.
Institutions: The film boasts an all-star cast led by Ben Affleck and Alex Convery, who co-directed the project. The involvement of renowned actor Matt Damon as the producer adds further credibility to the production. "AIR" is supported by Jeff Bezos through Amazon Studios in collaboration with Warner Bros. Notably, Michael Jordan himself requested four script changes during the production phase, reflecting his personal investment in the narrative.
Controversies: While "AIR" strives for authenticity, it takes creative liberties with certain historical facts. For instance, the film fictionalises Sonny Vacaro's absence from the house during pivotal moments, replacing it with phone calls. Additionally, Vacaro's termination from Nike in 1991 isn't mentioned, as some claim his role in the business was smaller than depicted. These narrative choices enhance the storytelling experience while maintaining audience engagement.
Language: Through skilled cinematography, "AIR" employs a variety of camera angles, shot types, and movements to bring the story to life. These techniques immerse the audience in the intensity and excitement of the events, enhancing their connection with the characters and the narrative.
By embracing a revolutionary approach to documentary filmmaking, "AIR" redefines the genre, captivating intergenerational audiences with its compelling narrative, nostalgic aesthetics, and exploration of enduring themes. It transcends the boundaries of traditional storytelling, leaving a lasting impact on viewers and establishing itself as a groundbreaking movie experience.
