Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
Worth the wait
It was great to finally see two horror icons battle it out in the much anticipated Freddy Vs Jason. I thought some of the characters were a bit cliche, but what do you expect from a slasher movie! It has all the familiar stereotypes: the dope-smoker, the co-ed who can't wait to go skinny dipping, the party-guy who loves to get wasted, etc. Standouts included rave-guy who was covered in glow-sticks, and the ambiguously gay teen played by Blake Washer. The recent box office take shows there is still a mainstream audience for horror, and Freddy Vs Jason did not disappoint!
Psycho Cop (1989)
Awesome 80's horror cheese!!
If you're in the mood for a great 80's horror, full of cliches and bad acting, look no further! 6 young adults get together at a mansion in the woods (looks alot like the suburbs) and are slowly dispatched by the killer. A nice selection of cheesy one-liners, along with the ambiguously gay character of Blake Washer, make this a perfect rental for a night of laughs and moans of "oh gaaawd, whatever"!
Half Past Dead (2002)
Better than Exit Wounds, but where's the Aikido??
I am a loyal Steven Seagal fan, though not for his acting, charisma or physical presence. Watching his fight scenes, which showcase his Aikido talents, fascinates me. His film Fire Down Below, while not an Oscar contender, remains a favorite of mine for excellent hand-to-hand battles throughout the movie.
That said, I walked into the sneak preview of Half Past Dead hoping to see some serious Seagal-type fights, but alas there was but one decent one, with too much moving camerawork.
As a standalone film, it's fairly entertaining, with some funny dialogue provided by rapper Kurupt. But as the new Steven Seagal vehicle, it lacks the trademark Aikido based fights that made him a star.
