Animation has the ability to convey complex stories in worlds that are otherwise unobtainable through conventional live action cinema. As such, it is unfair to say that because it it animated, it is somehow childish. This is not the case.
After only watching the 1st episode (which was more than enough for me and my wife), we felt that the story in and of itself was a childish interpretation of a revenge story found in the likes of Kill Bill or John Wick.
Largely the story lacks depth, or even a reasonable impetus for why the main character is going on a bloody journey of revenge. "My father was a white man" and I am a "Half Japanese / Caucasian Demon Monster, ostracized by my own people" so I'm going to kill him, is basically the reason for the lead to be doing anything. While you could compare this to as absurd as "you stole his car and killed his dog", the symbolism and the depth of the meaning that supplied more than adequate reason for John Wick to seek revenge.
The Bride was betrayed by Bill, shot in the head, left for dead, and had her child stolen from her. Again, a reasonable impetus to "kill Bill".
The reason for wanting to "kill my father because he is a white man" lacks any type of high stakes impetus. The dialogue is juvenile, and ultimately sounds like a young adult novel trying to be edgy, while sounding like "trash".
How she even managed to become the Samurai that she did also lacked any type of believably (even for an animation).
And while I am not expecting a true to life exposition, the concept of immersion, and world building is just lost. There is nothing believable or expected. She is great, and that's that. Not at all like say "Guts" from Berserk who built up on the initial training that he received, and I didn't even particularly care for Berserk.
The animation is good, but not ground breaking or amazing. If anything it doesn't really match the tone of the story. For the most part, the story of the first episode was bland, borish, and lacking in much depth. There wasn't anything that hooked either myself or my wife, and we found ourselves not at all interested in bothering with the rest of the series.
