American Fiction (2023)
A Perfect movie.
It's a come and a drama
It's an art film and a Hollywood movie
It's a black movie but it's not
It's about family and loneliness
It's a gay movie but it's not
I just finished watching it and I'm lost for words.
Being an artist myself, one that follows his instinct and not what people want this film touched me on a whole other level. The quote "The more stupid I become the more money I make" kinda shocked me. It's what I think literally every single day.
And the way the movie uses this cliche type of writing to write itself in the end is what made this movie a perfect 10 for me. Being Greek I'm with Lanthimos this year, "Poor things" was the best thing I wwwrched this year but American Fiction was a movie that will stay with me for a long time.
Fonissa (2023)
A very decent Greek movie, one of the few ones.
Just watched Fonissa in all its glory on the big screen:
Great picture and DoP. Costumes, scenery, ligh, props, all really well taken care of.
The acting as expected was top notch by the star Ms Karabeti, however due to the strange idiomatic 1800s Greek language the rest of the cast felt sub par to me,as expected once again: most actors in Greek movies perform like they are on a theatrical stage rather than on a movie. And they always use the excuse of "that's how we wanted it,it's more dramatic"
Well,nope it's just annoying.
Same goes for the usual problem in 99% of Greek movies: LACK OF CURVES. Films need to have some curves of tension, change of pace, emotion, and have a climax. This one didn't. Same stuff happening to all the film same pace same angles until the last scene when it's ends so abrupt and you re like "ah ok"
But in all,a decent movie and bravo to everyone, especially director and DoP and costumes.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Don't trust the rating,it's a gem
First off,I would prefer if I didn't know the Ibamas were behind the movie and read it in the end credits.
I liked the 70s style of cameras and colouring, the acting and how each character plays a specific role.
I'm not surprised people hated the "ending": that the entire meaning of the movie: NOT ALL PEOPLE ARE SMART,so I don't expect everyone to be thrilled or even understand what is happening .
If you voted negative, don't worry; it's like watching a game of chess between chess masters: if you don't have A FKN CLUE about chess you will call it a "snooze fest" and stuff like that.
If you know the language you will be thrilled.
The Shining (1980)
"Nowhere near the book"
Ohhhhh yes! These guys there are literally everywhere. They're lurking in the shadows, they might be looking at you now that you are reading this "review". How but how on earth can you compare a book with a picture? And with this particular picture which paved the way to all horror movies, and movies in general. And then you have THAT guy, giving a 5/10, yes you sir.
Like a 7 year old kid who shows up to nursery school and starts counting in reverse to impress the nearly infants. Oh my god, I really hope you guys existed in some other form, one we could never hear you or read from you. A beautiful butterfly, a flower. You would serve arts and society way better.
Saw this "5/10" under THIS picture and drove me nuts. Now I feel slightly better. I might go read some book before they slaughter it in Hollywood.
Siren: Survive the Island (2023)
Unbeatable
I'm 3 episodes in and I can't remember when it was the last time I had so much interests and agony on a TV game show.
There are surprises, there is hyper realism, there is tension, there are plots and betrayals and ACTION, lots of action.
Although I'm from Greece, I'm really addicted to anything made in Korean when it comes to TV, and before I even hit pmthe play button I was sure about what I would see.
It's also perhaps even better than the 100 Physical series which I enjoyed a lot.
For some reason Koreans know how to show characters and profiles, even when the whole rest of the whole thinks "they all look the same"
Nope, they're not, they just kick a$$ in what they do.
Can't wait to see what's a new day on the island is gonna bring!
