Good Luck (1996)

A Good Comedy

A very funny, laugh-out-loud movie. I checked Vincent D'Onofrio's credits after seeing this movie and realize I have seen him so many times in very good roles but this film really showcased his comedic talent. Good Luck told a good story about two totally different guys who really aren't so different after all. They captured the essence of how to give meaning back to your life, when you don't think things are going the way you thought they would. Don't miss this - it's one of the good ones out there! 3 out of 4.

A great little slice -of -life film. Just sit back, relax and enjoy. Don't often get to see well acted father/son relationships like this one - I just felt Vince Vaughn was a real natural. Also liked Joey Lauren Adams role - have not seen her before, but she was perfect in it. Bobby Moats was outstanding - what a great little actor! 3*/4*

Captain Ron IS the all time favorite comedy in our family. I laugh just thinking about "Captain Ron". How movies like this just get lost in the shuffle is beyond me. Don't the right people know a good thing when they see it? Don't miss seeing it again, again, again******** A 10!

Why the bad raps?

I was expecting the worst from all the bad reviews it got, but how bad, really, can a movie be with Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and James Gandolfini. I thought it was entertaining and had some good laughs in it. Pitt plays that kind of role well (Johnny Suede). Julia is Julia and she can carry even the worst movie (Nottinghill). 3/5

If my daughter hadn't needed me to return this video for her, I would never had the opportunity to see it. Life at its best and at its worst. The storyline will be familiar to anyone who saw Boiler Room and I enjoyed this just as much but for all different sorts of reasons. Vince Vaughn's character has heart despite what he does for a living. Ed Harris doesn't know how to give a bad performance and I'm not that familiar with Ormand, but she had me believing. If you like Vince Vaughn, you will enjoy this movie. He "is", his character from start to finish. B+

The first time I rented this movie, it seemed a bit annoying because of all the arguing, etc., but it entertained me enough to give it a second look and I ended up buying it. It speaks to the need in all human beings to love and be loved and all those weird things we say and do to somehow keep it from happening to us. I felt like I was in the front row of an off-broadway play and admired the characters so much for having to learn all that dialogue and have no other actors to share the load. My favorite scene is the middle of the night at Monica's place when Steve is quietly trying to leave and the ensuing conversation they have. The very last scene was open to the viewer's own feeling - we know they were each other's one true love but we had to decide what their future held (Personally, I think they ran in to each other in New York - in a taxi - after their children had grown and their first marriages were over and lived happily ever after - unmarried, of course!) Great acting by Salma Hayak and Russell Crowe.

A few technical flaws along the way, but all in all the way the music played with the scenes, a good dose of humor, and the realistic love scenes pretty much rounded out the on again/off again true love relationship Monica & Steve aspired to. *** out of ****

Now that all the Oscar hoopla is over, I must say that all the awards for this movie were well deserved. Ron Howard took a difficult subject and presented it on the big screen with much emotion, humor and intelligence. I have seen this film twice and was moved each time and certainly would have liked to see Russell Crowe receive an Oscar, too, as I thought it was his finest performance yet. The film also inspired me to read the book which I enjoyed very much, even tho the technical language was above my understanding. I am at a loss to understand all the criticism regarding the movie not following the book very closely - after all it's a MOVIE, folks. The book did not entertain me, it gave me an in-depth look at Mr. Nash's life. The movie allowed me to enter the heart and mind of Mr. Nash and the people who surrounded him at the given times the director chose to explore. Possibly the only scene not necessary was the car chase - yet, the fear portrayed by Mr. Crowe redeemed even that particular moment.
