The Pacific (2010)
Soulless and really bad
Having a 8.3 score on IMDB, the girlfriend and I thought we were in for a treat, as we've watched a lot of movies and series from WW2. We couldn't be more wrong. This is a snuff series about limbs being shot off, gold teeth being peeled out with knifes, and people turning into psychopaths.
It started OK. The journalist/writer becoming a bedwetter had some character. Compared to most of the other soldiers, it was possible to distinguish him from most of the other Italian-American prettyboys. The Australian episode was a bit boring, but at least it had some content.
Then came the Christian, quiet guy, just wanting to go to war. After a while we have so many closeups of him thinking and looking "sad" (soulless), the pictures should have an Emo soundtrack in the background. He obviously turns into a psychopath, wanting to kill all of Japan, but still mourning his dead dog Sparky. Sorry, I mean Deacon.
Another easy-to-forget character is the hero of one of the fights, risking his life so a machine gun can shoot through the pile of dead Japanese soldiers. He is sent back to America and has to perform in television and date models. When he finally meets an Italian girl, the cliches became so many that we had to fast-forward every time she was in a scene. When the suffering hero finally is able to go back to the war (after marrying, of course, with grand music in the background), he runs around with a big machine gun. Pretty sure he had seen First Blood.
In general, all women in the series are presented as quite flat, pretty, nude props.
We did not learn any history or politics from this series. No understanding of war strategies. What we learned, was that a series can show 10.000 closeups of rifles being shot, and still get high IMDB score.
Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022)
Watch with an open, clear mind
I'm one of the seemingly few reviewers who haven't seen many of the old, original movies, so I actually created an imdb account in order to rate the movie, just to be a counterweight of the bitterness.
When my 10yr old wanted to watch this with the whole family on Christmas Eve, I was really happy - finally a break from iPads and Roblox. The movie was quite good, especially in the middle, when they were tripping pretty hard. For some reason (?) I look for the double of Scrooge McDuck. Some of the songs also were intriguing. If you like black metal, you'll love some of the scenes. Ebenezer has a bit too quick change at the end of the movie, but hey.
