Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
Fails to convince
I have to say that I enjoyed the other Die Hard movies to some extent. I'm not an action fan, but they were done well and they were believable. McClane was also always a likable character.
In this movie, the conclusion I drew is that he's just getting old, but he still has to work. He does things in and old fashioned way, talks in an old fashioned way, lacks sarcasm and humour. Sometimes he even looks quite dumb. He's more of a fighting and kicking grandpa, but well he isn't because it's still the Daddy + Daughter thing.. that really becomes tiresome. Why not have her be mother and he the real grandpa, that would be a real sequel and actually reflect what he's playing anyway.
But that's not the worst. The worst is the reaction of the environment: The light in the tunnel goes out, but none of the cars therein switch on their headlights. They crash into each other without breaking. That's not even close to being realistic! All other people besides McClane become stupid supernumeraries that are just obstacles in his way. Yawn! Next thing: Hacking!? SORRY? That's not hacking, that's clicking the right buttons on first attempt on a GUI that you've never seen before. Ridiculous. But wait, that wasn't the worst either, the worst are the characters and how they are totally boring. The villain is just a toothless boring little bad boy and the good government agent is never doing anything besides screaming "We've got to do something" while looking incredibly stressed.
I hope they don't make another one.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Bad worse worst, don't watch!!
When the two biggest idiots in this movie need to explain the situation to the dumbfounded audience and some dialogs just leave you baffled because you think WTF!? are they talking about and when you're fed up staring into Knightley's artificially tough face then I think we understand. Jack Sparrow is only a shadow of the character in the first part, which I liked. This one features a lot of bad acting (sometimes you can really see how the director said: "You move to this place from here, then look there and say following in the camera"). It's over-directed, overrated and the jokes have longer beards than those of the oldest sailors ever to sail the sea.
What the #$*! Do We (K)now!? (2004)
Too simplistic
First, I like to say some words about the German dubbing of the movie, which is horrible. The speakers' lips were out of sync more often than not and the voices IMO were certainly not the best to fit the actors. The translator of the, I'll call them "talking heads", was okay, but overall it was hard to watch as you were constantly reminded that you're sitting in a cinema. At the end when the initial expectations wear off, I was also becoming increasingly bored, up to the point where I wanted to leave because it was all so blatantly obvious and superficial and quite contrary to their question "How deep do you want to dive into this mystery?", they failed for their own as they stayed shallow and they didn't take themselves serious for the most part of this movie. I felt that.
I think some of the other comments summed up the other failings of this movie pretty well. To me it did present little new information and I think it was targeted specifically for the mid 30 to mid 40 year old average Americans in his/her midlife crisis. The constant repetition of their simple messages surely was an insult to every thinking mind. Some time into the movie memories from Donnie Darko and its Jim Cunningham popped up. The link to quantum science is also totally speculative.
So why still 3/10? First, I don't want to give it a 1/10 rating, because with a lot of 10/10 and a lot of 1/10 a movie becomes interesting as it separates one from the other (quantum theoretically speaking forces the particle into a concrete position) and I didn't think that happened with me so strongly, as well as the movie was more boring than interesting. I gave 3/10 because of personal feelings and after all some of the basic messages of the movie are not really wrong, except that they make you think this is scientific stuff. So yes I agree, you can do everything if you just want to do it, but this movie certainly could do better. Judging by that it's possible that the filmmakers didn't want to.
Btw, anybody viewing this movie should also know on Relativism. It's quite easy to fall for, yet it has serious problems.
Night on Earth (1991)
5 episodes of which I liked only 1
The first episode (Los Angeles) was the most boring. It had absolutely nothing to offer that was entertaining and I felt the actors didnt play very well too. Sometimes it looked more like a play than a movie. Also I found Winona Ryder exaggerated her character too much. But luckily after the LA episode came the NY episode which was the best overall. Very funny and the characters played very well too. Really gave me a good laugh. The Paris episode, well it wasnt that great overall. The Rome episode then again was a bit better featuring Roberto Benigni as the Taxi driver. Very good actor! The last episode played in Helsinki and tried to be dramatic though for me it failed as you cannot feel so much for characters you hardly know about. Besides the plot the movie featured some really great scenes and I liked the fact that everyone spoke their native tongue (the french taxi driver spoke french,...).
