War Dogs (2016)
A story about greed, well executed
It is a film about everything that's wrong with america. A manipulative and greedy business man (jonah hill) meets with a childhood friend who's an honest worker and family man (Miles teller). The character of miles teller is convinced by his "friend" that he deserves a better life (the false american ideology that money makes you happier) and he gets him to work into a questionable business which is not at first illegal, but as the profits, the stress, the drugs and the greed rise, staying in the legal lane becomes less important and money becomes the only tangible concept.
As expected, everything falls apart and at the end, we are reminded that money is king, that no one can be trusted when cash is involved and that integrity is just a word.
8/10.
Simple comme Sylvain (2023)
Love, desire, Boredome and...Chaos
Loved that film! An authentic journey into Quebec culture.
Acting is great, pictures are magnificent, but the thing that got me hooked was the amount of great moments of discomfort and chaos. Made me uncomfortable but in a way I enjoyed.
*** Dont believe the bad reviews***
First, it is not a romantic comedy. While comedy is present, it is pretty dark and I would describe it more as a drama, as well as a love dilemma.
Also, I saw reviews saying it is very much based on stereotypes. While a part of that might be true, you have to remember it's still a movie so it has to be a bit polarizing. But, as quebecois that lived both in Montreal and the suburbs/coutryside, I could relate to every situation in the film and I have to say, it was very accurate.
Loved the ending too.
9/10.
Uncut Gems (2019)
I don't get the 9s and 10s
Yes, I agree with the reviews saying it is a chaotic and stressful film. Sandler's character is in big trouble from beginning to end and digs his hole even more every second that passes. I kept asking myself how the hell is this guy even still alive ?
But, I thought the film was a bit long and that too much focus was put on the Weeknd and basketball. These parts weren't really interesting to me.
Overall, I found the film boring, repetitive and weird, but I did enjoy the self destruction part as well as I enjoyed Adam Sandler's performance.
6/10, would not recommend and would definitly not watch it again.
Demolition (2015)
When nothing makes sense anymore
When Davis's wife dies, he loses all sense of purpose. He is a successful businessman, has a beautiful house, nice car and he's a healthy fit good looking man. But at this moment, he's just lonely. He has no one to talk to and it is through letters he's writing to a random vending machine company's customer service that he discovers how he feels.
I thought the movie was very original and relatable. No all mariages or relationships are perfect. The authentic and unique perspective in the film makes it really interesting and the performances of the actors makes it even more perfect (the soundtrack also, as any other Vallé movie).
Loved it, will rewatch for sure
8*
Hugo (2011)
Nice film!
Hugo was a very unique film with spectacular views, gorgeous looking dogs and a great lineup of actors.
I liked the pace, the way things build up and the imagery. But, I thought the characters were cold and they didn't make me feel anything really. I didn't cry or laugh deeply or felt my heart warming up. The thing that kept me watching really was the fact that I wanted to know where the hell the story was going, and I really enjoyed the last 30 minutes when you realise what the film is all about. It helped me remember where the film industry started and who built this legacy, with passion and love of the art. A more positive view than the usual critics of how greedy producers of hollywood are.
I would probably not watch it again, but I'm happy I saw it.
6/10!
Grind (2003)
The soundtrack, the skateboarding scenes and friendship
As a 1994 kid, this movie moved everything about myself when I watched it and it still resonates today as it takes me back to the good old days every single time. INSANE soundtrack, great skateboarding scenes And a nice story about friendship and living to the fullest pursuing a dream. A journey like that may not give you what you wanted at first, but it will make you learn about yourself more than anything. I grew up wathing my chemical romance and billy talent on mtv as well as skateboard tapes with my brothers and cousins. I can assure you that grind is THE go to movie for us and will always be. It's not an oscar worthy movie, but a fun and enjoyable one for pretty much all ages. Would recommend 100%
