Junji Itô: Korekushon (2018)
Just go read the books.
I won't lie, Junji Ito's work is amazing! He puts a lot of time and effort into making his work as best it can be whilst making sure everything is unsettling. However, Collections is not a good way to show how amazing is work truly is.
At first I was excited to watch this back in 2018 since I am a massive fan of Junji Ito, I won't lie I wish I didn't. Collections has some of my favourite short stories of all time yet all of them just felt so off and didn't do any of them justice to how amazing they truly are. As the episodes go on the budget just seems to slip aswell and everything just starts to get worse and worse.
If you're a new Junji Ito fan, please just go read the books.
Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre (2023)
Dissapointing to say the least.
After the whole Junji Ito: Collections mess, I had higher hopes for Tales of the Macabre. Sadly those hopes went down quite quickly, I won't lie it is better than Collections but it still wasn't good at all.
I just think Junji Ito's work doesn't translate well to animation. Like it's less detailed and feels wrong (e.g., the characters felt bland), whilst in his books you can tell there was love put into it all whilst being able to get to know the characters for the time that they're alive. The animation wasn't scary or unnerving like the books. So to everyone that wants to get into Junji Ito's work, I just suggest buying the books that contain the short stories over the animation.
