The Happening (2008)
4/10
It didn't Happen for me
17 August 2008
First some background. Loved Sixth Sense. Unbreakable is one of my favourite movies ever! Signs was a disappointment. Hated Village and Lady in the Water was only just OK. I stopped seeing MNS movies in theatres after Village. And after Happening, I will still be waiting for video.

The movie fails in so many ways; let me address them one at a time. The first most glaring reason is its main star, Mark Wahlberg. While I have liked him in some roles in the past, he completely fails to bring to life this goofy science teacher. I don't know why MNS chose him, because I never would have. While Walhberg is good sometimes, he has a very small range, and this was just not the right role for him.

Secondly the gore. Completely unnecessary, especially as I feel as though MNS is just not comfortable with it, which is why all his movies in the past have been very PG-13. All the gory and non-gory scenes happened in the same way as MNS treats all his scary scenes. It cuts away at the last moment, or the view is obstructed somehow, etc. Which I have always loved, as MNS is very good at crafting a scary scene. But here it was as though the producers were like "Ok MNS, your movies are failing and we need to tap into a different market, so just add in a couple gory scenes and we'll see if we can get the horror crowd." So in the end, we get a patchwork effort were only some of the death scenes were gory, and they were usually very poorly done, and still, honestly, kinda tame (nothing like Grindhouse).

Lastly the story. All I can say is that it just wasn't executed properly. There was too much emphasis on trying to explain everything, while trying to maintain a theme that you can't explain everything. And the explanation was not satisfying at all. And the scary/death scenes were...well...just not that scary.

Unfortunately MNS is slowly becoming a two-hit wonder.

Technically Brilliant!
21 January 2007
Wow! What an amazing film! Absolutely top notch. What surprises me though is that not only did it not make much money at the box office, but it wasn't even nominated for any Golden Globe awards. Maybe I am missing something? I really hope it gets some recognition at the Academy Awards because it definitely deserves it. The acting by all was great. The writing was suspenseful, thrilling, interesting, and socially relevant to many contemporary issues. For me though, I absolutely loved the direction and cinematography, in particular to two scenes (the ambush in the forest and the battle in Bexhill). I just found the way that the camera followed around the action, and the way it was all portrayed was technically genius. I've always loved Shayamalan's usage of extended takes on a shot, but he really needs to take page out of Cuaron's book, because this movie blows anything M. Night has ever done. Well done!

Saw III (2006)
4/10
Slowly getting worse
29 October 2006
I loved the first Saw (9/10). Saw II (5/10) was quite a disappointment, but honestly, I didn't really expect that much, as I knew they were not going to build upon or go in a new direction with a sequel, and that it would be just a rehash of old ideas. Saw III is pretty much the same as II. Nothing new added, same old territory.

Although this one I found was worse that II. Mostly because half of the movie was in flashbacks, which really didn't add anything to the current plot or do much for character development of Jigsaw and his apprentice. It was just filler because the writer/director had such a weak story and didn't know what else to do.

Also Charlie Clouser, the composer, created an excellent piece of music at the end of Saw 1, and unfortunately he knows it, because he uses it over and over again in this film. It was great the first time, but, it gets tiring hearing it over and over again.

Finally, I also found the quality of acting, writing, directing, also quite shabby, when compared to the other two films. At least though, we did have a strong ending, but again, one that was totally predictable (unlike the great unpredictable ending of Saw 1).

At least it was gory
14 October 2006
Well there is not much to say about this movie, but then again, what can you expect from a film that is produced by Michael Bay? I was dragged to this by my 17 year old cousin (I am 28), and it was either this or Grudge 2. I wasn't particularly interested in either, but since this had a higher age rating (16+ vs 13+ - in Canada btw), I said this one has got to be scarier.

Was it scary? For me, not at all. My 17 year old cousin thought it was, and she also thought one of the guys was really hot! While I bet Grudge probably would have been a little scarier, TCM tries to scare its audience, by excessive amounts of gore, constant annoying music, quick editing cuts, etc. The usual tricks in the bag used by your common Hollywood Horror director. All of which are I find totally ineffective.

I never saw the remake 3 years ago, but I am a big fan of the original classic of the 70s. It is too bad movies are rarely made like that one anymore:( I would've given this film a zero, but it did achieve a level of gore that movies like Hostel (I didn't find that movie shocking or gory at all!!!) fail to reach. So it gets a three from me.

A feast for the eyes and the heart.
28 July 2005
When watching this film (which everyone should), try not to take it too seriously. Try not to search for some elaborate plot. Just sit back, open your eyes, and enjoy the sights on screen. I promise you, if you enjoy expanding your horizons looking at images of art, then this film is for you.

I found that in this film, if you were to freeze frame it at any point, you could post up the image in an art gallery as a work of art. It is not just the beautiful cinematography, but the complex, wondrous, awe-inspiring images that are put on screen that make this movie so good.

On top of all that we have a collection of characters who are, themselves, pieces of art, whose idiosyncrasies and hilarity will have you amused from start to finish. Don't take them too seriously and don't try to look too deep for any hidden meanings. Take them for what they are and the things they make you think about.

A truly great film, recommended for all.

Average horror sequel
28 July 2005
The strangest thing about this movie is that even though all of the characters are speaking Japanese, the whole affair feels like an American remake of a Japanese horror film.

The first One Missed Call was quite the rip-off of the current flavor of the month, when it comes to Japanese-style horror films. Fortunately, it had the talented Takahashi Miike at the helm, therefore even though it didn't really offer the viewer anything new, it still had that Miike flare to it that made all the difference.

One Missed Call 2, is brought to us without Miike and it is apparent to us from start to finish. And we end up with a bland rehashing of old themes, average acting, and nothing special in the dialogue department. Admittedly it is still scary at times, still no where as near as its predecessors of the genre. And the ghost story behind it all is not as compelling either.

One Missed Call 2 is not a waste of money, however, and can still entertain you if you are a big fan of the Japanese horror genre, or even of horror films in general.

Mediocre "B" war drama saved by action packed ending
28 July 2005
This movie is about two American deserters in WWII. Apparently they were court-marshaled for an accident involving a flame-thrower, but not too much is revealed about that, with the exception of the same flash-back annoyingly popping up every 10mins. As they travel the European countryside, not very much interesting happens to them. The two actors are your typical unknown amateur actors who sound like they are reading their lines rather than speaking them. And when the reach a strange orphanage, the story gets weirder before it gets any good.

I thought the direction really wasn't that good, with the exception of the action sequences, which were up to the standard of any other good action director. But the rest left something to be desired. Some movies with small budgets can sometimes pull of really great things, and you are surprised to find out that it was a small budget. This one doesn't and reeks of a B-movie all over it.

If you really love war movies and are desperate for another one, check this one out, I am sure you won't be too disappointed. But the rest of you can pass on this one, you won't be missing much.

Ghost House (2004)

Beware the chickens!!!
28 July 2005
My rating of 9, may be a little inflated because I absolutely adored Kick the Moon, and was really looking forward to this one. It was still a very good movie, but I definitely didn't laugh as much or feel for the characters as much as I did in Kick the Moon.

But in the end, this movie does have it all. It is funny, a little bit eerie, sexy, another cool big fight scene, touching, dramatic. Just like his previous films, while the movie is really just a comedy, the director tries to add in other types of elements, and succeeds in making them all work together seamlessly.

In this film we have a man (acted very well by one of the stars of Kick the Moon) who is obsessed with owning his own house because of his eccentric father. Finally when he does get his house, he finds out that it is haunted. And so begins the battle for the house, ghost vs man! But just like the director's other films, the story is not as simple as that, and develops quite nicely for an entertaining 2 hours.

Definitely worth seeing, check it out if you ever get the chance!

Spider Forest (2004)
8/10
Terrific slow-paced drama
28 July 2005
This is a very good film about a man trying to find and understand himself after the devastating loss of his wife in a plane crash. The answers to all his questions and secrets lie within the Spider Forest. So no, don't go into this movie thinking that it is a horror film with spiders running around killing people. There are a couple of "tense" moments" but, unlike American films, these are not done gratuitously, and are there to serve as points of development for the characters and do not deter the tempo of this film from being a deep character study of one man's self discovery. Great acting by all aboard is only strengthened by a solid script and talented director. This film reminded me a lot of a Japanese film called the Uninvited. So if you liked that one, you can't miss Spider Forest.

Night Watch (2004)

Great film with a well created mythology
28 July 2005
This is a very very entertaining film. It has some nice special effects for a film with such a small budget. Great acting by some believable actors. Great dialogue. Cool, fun action sequences. But the real backbone of this film is the mythology upon which the whole plot lies.

The mythology created by the original author upon which the film is based, belongs up there with the great ones like Lucas' Star Wars, the Wachowski brothers' Matrix, Tolkien's LOTR, Herbert's Dune. It just has that kind of history and interesting terms and names and events that make you go, "Wow! What's that all about?...That is so cool! I wanna learn more! Wouldn't be cool to live in that universe?" The funny thing for me though, is that this mythology, is a "vampire" related mythology. And since reading the Anne Rice novels and her well described history of the vampires, I have not been able to accept anyone else's interpretation of vampires. Kate Beckinsale in Underworld...no! And even though I think that the acting and writing for Buffy the Vampire Slayer was some of the best stuff on television, I just did not think that their treatment of vampire mythology was up to standard. But here in Night Watch...it worked! I thought that this was a tremendous film and enjoyed it greatly. I would absolutely recommend it, especially if you like any of the above mythical worlds, and are looking to get yourself into another one. Can't wait for the sequels!

Excellent slow-paced psychological thriller
20 July 2005
You know, I don't say this about any foreign movies, but I am going to say it here. This movie could be done well as a North American remake (ducks!), in the right hands of course.

I absolutely adored the premise for this film. A child, tortured at school when he was young, develops multiple personalities from it. His dual personalities (one weak and kind, the other strong and sociopathic) are kept well hidden all of his life and don't affect anyone else until, some new neighbors move in. A very evil and cruel bully, who he also ends up working with at a construction site. The bully bullies him, and the stronger personality starts to emerge to protect the weaker one. And that's when the freaky stuff starts to happen.

Good pacing by the director, showing the main character's struggle with his past and slow descent into madness. Great acting by everyone, especially the stronger personality. That guy was absolutely terrifying to watch on screen. He brought an unusual amount of tension to every scene. Well done.

But in the end, I still thought the film was lacking. This movie should have been an easy 10/10, but I have to give it an 8, because more could have and should have been done to help flesh out the development of the main character. I still hope that all of you will go out there and give this film a chance, and hopefully some American producer will see its potential and try and get a remake made, because as good as it was...it could have been better.

Go See This Movie!
20 July 2005
Disclaimer: I am Canadian so I may have a slight bias to my comments on this film.

This is a very very entertaining film, as it has all of the facets that an entertaining film should have. Great believable acting, interesting, twisting story with well developed characters and some light humor, the direction effectively created a sense of tension and suspense that is rarely seen these days in horror films and thrillers. In the end a job well done by all. I remember seeing a similar film at the Fantasia Festival in Montreal two years ago, called Dead End with Ray Wise. If you have seen that one and liked it as much as I did, then you will surely like this one.

Not to be missed and I really hope that this one gets out there and is seen by as many people as possible!

P (2005)

Great horror flick but a bit exploitative of Thai women
20 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
P (which means ghost in the Thai language - although there aren't really any ghosts in this movie) is the story of a girl who becomes a prostitute, and then a flesh-eating demon who hunts people at night. Great acting and excellent presentation, especially from an English director, who has created a very authentic Thai looking film. But at the same time the movie, especially the first hour, has the feel of Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls (young girls being taken advantage of by a system; this is how it is, however unfortunate, so let's just enjoy it).

The film starts off simply enough where we are introduced to a 12 year old girl who is the granddaugther of a witch. People from her small village are naturally afraid of them. But we drift away from this setup quickly as we watch our 12 year old strip down to her white undies, and goes for a swim, at which point the undies become see-through and...well the theme for the rest of the first hour is disturbingly set.

Fast forward 5 years, our heroine is now 17, and heads to bangkok to make some money to pay for food and medicines for her ailing grandmother. The powers that be manipulate her into becoming a "go-go" dancer and prostitute. At first she is tortured by her first "time" (rape?) with a customer (who was actually the director!), but in the next scene is hungry for more as she competes with the other girls in the bar for men and dances. Thus plays out the first hour of the movie, much more like a drama, completely forgetting the scary, mystical beginnings of the movie and the reason for her trip to Bangkok (her grandmother!), as we see scene after scene of, albeit beautiful, scantily clad Thai women dancing, and all of the intricacies of prostitution in Thailand.

Finally the second hour begins as her witch powers are brought back into it, and she begins to turn into some sort flesh-eating demon. All very well done and scary, saving the movie from becoming another Showgirls.

Although the long exotic dance scenes seem exploitative to me (another during the end credits?! Oh come on!), I would still very much recommend this movie. Especially if you love Asian women, because this one has some of the best looking ones I've seen in a long time!

Bravo!
21 February 2005
Clint Eastwood really has become an extremely skilled director. It amazes me how he can put so much emotion, depth and feeling, into what really is just a simple story, with simple characters. He did it last year with Mystic River, and again he triumphs this year with Million Dollar Baby.

Very moving, totally flawless movie. I can't really think of one thing that I didn't like. Most things people will not like about this movie are things that really have nothing to do with what this movie is trying to achieve. This is a character driven movie, not a plot one. It is not trying to be true to the real world of boxing or any other inaccuracies people might find. Don't take everything that happens so literally. This is a movie about a man ridden with guilt searching for redemption, and a lost woman looking to find herself and find acceptance and love from a "parental" figure. Clint Eastwood and Hillary Swank, along with all of the supporting characters deliver on every level.

Even though I loved this movie a lot. I still wouldn't give it the Oscar. Aviator and DiCaprio should get it. Although Mystic should have beat out LOTR last year (*ducks from all the LOTR fans gunning for him*)

Saw (2004)

A pretty good movie with an INCREDIBLE ending!
12 December 2004
This is a very good suspense thriller. Great acting, great idea for a story with some OK writing and directing. I am a person that really likes character development, even though most movie-goers like a plot that moves, and moves quickly. So I was a little dismayed for the first 30-45 mins where I was hoping that we would get to see a little depth put into the great characters that they had created, but instead was treated to a fast-paced plot. Not really surprising since all producers edit their movies to remove character development in order to have a quicker moving plot (just watch any DVD's deleted scenes and the director will tell you that the reason the scene was deleted was because people were saying that the movie was dragging a little long and the plot had to get going).

The direction was good, but it always felt a little like a really bad David Fincher rip-off. David Fincher has a really great, unique directing style, and I don't mind if a director uses him as inspiration to develop their own style, but in SAW, he just wasn't able to pull it off.

And about the ending. Don't worry about it. It's not about any surprise. It is just a really cool ending that put all the pieces of the movie together.

Without the ending I would give it a 3/5, but with it, it gets an easy 4!

The Village (2004)

Another disappointing let down
6 August 2004
You did it again Shayamalan. I was hoping Signs was just a fluke in how bad it was, but you managed to almost just as bad with the Village.

I still love your cinematography. Very beautiful art direction, very much draws the viewer into the "period" world that you have created. Your direction and the actors also perform very well and are the last good things about this movie.

The fault with this movie, as it was with Signs, is in the screenplay/plot. Now maybe you could just blame high expectations because I would agree that with both movies (after loving both Sixth Sense and Unbreakable) I had very high expectations and couldn't wait to go and see them. But truthfully, in both cases I was expecting to get a Ferrari and all I got was a Tercel. You walk into the Village hoping for at least a scary movie, but I gotta say this movie isn't at all frightful! The creatures when you finally see them are such a major let down! All I will say is that I kept thinking of the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz.

And the plot twist I saw coming a mile away! Almost from the beginning when William Hurt is telling the school children in class about "Those we do not speak of" I suspected it but I was like nah, Shaymalan can't be that silly with his plot lines. But about 20mins before it was finally revealed I knew for sure, how the rest of the movie was gonna play out and was begging God that I was wrong. But in the end I wasn't.

I can't say it any better than the guy behind me as the credits started to roll..."What the $%^$ was that #$^@?"

Plays more like a dull TV movie
29 July 2004
This movie is separated into three different acts, all telling the story/history of a family that lives in a house haunted by ghosts. Each act focuses on a different character over the years.

The overall plot and characters are really quite bland, as you never really feel that engaged enough into the film. They all come off as being very superficial, and not really having much depth, despite a good job by all of the actors. This lack of depth makes the few scary scenes in acts 2 and 3, not as scary as they could have been.

Overall a pretty dull movie, that probably had a lot of promise on paper, but when executed, it just failed to succeed on many levels. Still worth watching if you are really bored one night.

Ringu with cellphones!
26 July 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Although a very formulaic movie, ripe with unoriginality, still very scary, and sure to give you nightmares afterwards.

It basically follows the standards that Ringu set up. Some vengeful ghost sends warnings out to people before it kills them. There is even the funeral scene after the first death, where a school girl tells the female lead all about the myth. And also just when you think it is over at the end, the ghost comes back for one last scare. Not very much character depth or plot depth. Just a very very good exercise in trying to scare the audience, which works very well here in One Missed Call as it did with Ringu.

The problem is that the day before I saw this one, I saw A Tale of Two Sisters. Another equally terrifying movie, but with an incredible story and character depth, so it is hard not to compare. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

Best scene in the movie? The Exorcism show. Chilling as much as it is funny; very entertaining! Well done!

Better than your average B horror movie, but still a B movie
23 July 2004
Sometimes I wonder if I even saw the same film as everyone else. Or perhaps my feelings for this film were hampered by my high expectations, as most people I encountered said that this was an outstanding film, very scary, original. Plus I saw it at a film festival (Fantasia Fest in Montreal) which is known for showcasing very original horror films. But in the end I found Shallow Ground not very different from most straight to video horror movies.

I found it laughably predictable at times. The acting and dialogue were very run of the mill. The music was extremely reminiscent of Friday the 13th. The direction and plot were interesting though, but only to a point (sort of like a Revenge of the Living Dead). Some parts were kinda creepy, but nothing too intense or scray.

Really nothing special about this film at all. If you are really desperate for something, I guess you could give a try, but there are a lot out there that are "must see"s over this one.

Drink two cups of coffee just before
21 July 2004
CAUTION: This movie is very very long and very very slow! Although it is a very good movie, and well worth seeing, I would strongly advise that you do not watch this movie just before bed time. Watch it when you are fully rested, or you will fall asleep.

Another cautionary note, is that IMDb should remove the categories, Horror and Thriller, because this movie is strictly a Drama, and a very slow moving one at that. It does have some ghosts in it, maybe 2 or 3 scenes in the beginning, but they are really not that scary, nor are they really meant to scare. And they are long forgotten once you have reached the 90mins mark.

It is a very sad movie with most of the characters going through some really deep trauma, so if you are looking for something upbeat, look somewhere else.

This is a very good movie though. With some terrific performances by the actors and a very good effort by the director. Definitely worth seeing. Just be ready for something sad, slow and long.

Incredible Thriller!
19 July 2004
Truly magnificent effort by all involved. I haven't seen a psychological thriller this good since the Silence of the Lambs. Dario Grandinetti's chilling portrayal of a seemingly psychotic serial killer is engrossing, evocative, amusing at times and too surreal it becomes terrifying. A flawless performance, his on-screen presence captured your attention refusing to let go, not even for a moment.

His performance is equalled by Goya Toledo, whose stunning portrayal of Dario's wife, his both smart, sexy and strong.

The writing and direction were also top-notch; developing the multi-dimensional characters full of depth, excellent cinematography, playing off the rival husband and wife against each other, etc.

There seriously was not one fault with this film. A Must see!!!

Doppelganger (2003)

Nice entertaining two hours
12 July 2004
Nothing wrong with this movie, but nothing particularly special about it either. It was a nice little drama, with some action, comedy and scary stuff added in for spice.

It is all about one man's struggle to try and get what he really wants out of life (quit his job he hates, getting the pretty girl, etc), but never does. So his doppelganger (not necessarily evil, more like the person he always wanted to be, but was afraid of becoming) comes along and does it for him.

Great acting, direction (great split screen usage), and an alright plot line keep you interested and entertained. Well worth seeing.

Godzilla (I) (1998)
1/10
Only movie ever, where I wanted to walk outta the theatre!
11 July 2004
First off I would like to point out that I have only seen the original Godzilla movie and therefore would not really call myself a fan of the whole Godzilla franchise. Also this movie has so much more wrong with it than just the fact that it is GINO (Godzilla in name only), and the lizard creature featured in the film is missing all of the original Godzilla's trademarked powers/personality/etc.

This movie really sucks for one reason and one reason only. Roland Emmerich. Now I have to admit first, that I did enjoy Patriot and it does not follow the exact same formula that Emmerich does with all of his movies, so don't apply the following to the Patriot. Stargate, Indepedence Day, Godzilla, and probably Day after Tomorrow (haven't seen it yet but from the trailers looks the same) all follow the same action/adventure/sci-fi formula created by Mr. Steven Spielberg. Clear sense of who the good guys are and who the bad guys are; storyline centers around action that needs lots of special effects; corny, campy (and in Emmerich's case not funny) jokes; action sequences that are exciting but not too intense, so that young kids can watch; and a light-hearted fun adventure movie that is supposed to leave you with a good warm feeling by the end.

Unfortunately for Emmerich, he fails in every aspect of this formula that Spielberg created. And his attempts come off as very superficial. The characters have no depth. The story lines are EXTREMELY predictable, overly simplistic, and because everything feels like a rip-off (unless you have never seen a Spielberg film), leaves you feeling bored, your intelligence insulted, and just wanting to leave, turn it off and go and rent Indiana Jones.

This was my all-time worst movie I had ever seen, until I saw Battlefield Earth. Please avoid at all costs!

Honey (2003)
1/10
Terribly generic and predictable film
6 December 2003
I just saw this movie last night. And I loved watching it, only because I love my gf and if she is happy with something then I am. If I wasn't with my gf, then I would have hated this film and never ever have seen it, for it is a complete waste of time.

Well, maybe not. This movie is really for for two kinds of people only. Anyone under the age of 10 and people who love hip-hop culture and the icons that go along with it(my gf is the second obviously lol). I like hip-hop music and all but a movie that is just trying to cash in on the current hip-hop craze will just not do it for me.

First the writing was horrendous. Characters were all one-dimensional, and were really just plot devices, and had no depth or feeling whatsoever. The dialogue literally sounded like it was written by a 10 year old, which is why 10 year olds would love this movie. It was extremely predictable! Actually I knew what was gonna happen throughout the whole movie before it even started. As I said it is a movie about hip-hop culture and if you know anything about that then there will be no surprises. But I guess that is why it is written like that because you are not supposed to be using your brain throughout the movie, just your instincts and hormones. Watching the women in tight revealing clothing dance like they are having sex with the air, and watching everyone else get into fights.

The acting was equally bad. I'll never forget the guy during the opening credits who is talking to Honey asking for a free drink. It honestly sounded like he was reading those lines off of cue cards. And I wouldn't be surprised if he actually was! Everyone was bad! Bad! Bad! Bad! Maybe the only screen presence that was mildly entertaining to watch, was Missy Elliot. Although, she only had two 1 minute scenes (sorry M.E. fans), she was funny.

Billie Woodruff's directing was also equally unimpressive which I have to say was surprising given that he is a music video director, and the music video scenes were just so bland, and booooring. I guess being a good music video director just doesn't translate very well to being a good movie director.

Please if you are considering watching this movie, save the $10, and go see either Last Samurai (although severely cliched and laden with egotistical stereotypes, I'm sure is still a LOT better than Honey), or What Alice Found (Amazing drama, with top quality acting, writing and directing, even though it doesn't have all of the hype and mass marketing of Honey or Last Samurai). But then again if you are under 10 or you just go crazy for anything associated with hip-hop culture, then go out and see it now, cause you will love it!
