The Fountain (2006)
Best movie of 2006!
The fountain by Darren Aronofsky is truly the best movie of 2006. I watched it during the Flanders film festival and I was shocked. People where actually sitting in the hallway because there wasn't enough room and people kept sitting there 3 minutes after the film had ended. The fountain is an experience that takes you through 3 different periods in time, each presenting a different atmosphere. The way Aronofsky and his whole cast do this is simply marvelous. The dark and primitive 1500's, the 'city that never sleeps' 2000 and the vast depths of space in 2500. The story is as brilliant as it is beautiful, love through the ages. Don't get me wrong, the fountain is a difficult movie and nodding of for a few minutes can cause a lot of confusion. But in exchange for your attention you get brilliant acting by a wonderful Hugh Jackman and a breathtaking Rachel Weisz, the most beautiful shots that the modern cinema has ever seen, and a story that fills your heart with so much love, hope and also sadness that you can't help but wanting to see this movie again. The reason this film was ripped of multiple oscarnominations is that it is not a crowd pleaser. It's a difficult film with a lot of symbolism. If the academy hadn't denied Darren Aronofsky's success. This film would have been a serious contender for Best Direction, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best actress in a supporting role, Best original score and Best Movie. It's a pity that films that can make a difference in the movie world are denied the respect and honor that they deserve.
Eurovision Song Contest: Latvia 2003 (2003)
One of the best.
I must say, my expectations weren't all that when is started watching this Eurovision Song Contest. I was disappointed every time I looked. But when the nice lady from Iceland started singing, my heart was happy. Fourth was Sertab Erener from Turkey, the winner. I thought she really deserved her victory. Other nice songs came from Belgium with 'Sanomi' and Russia with 'Ne ver ne besjia'. They came 2nd and 3th. The setting in Riga was very well done. The floor was one big screen were the Latvian television projected all sorts of soothing images on. The stage was very well as always I guess.
The vote was very exciting with a head-to-head race between Turkey and Belgium. Russia also got some points but you knew they weren't going to make it. This was the final top three: 1: Turkey 167 2: Belgium 165 3: Russia 164
All by all it was a very good contest with nice songs and nice visual effects. Thank you Latvia.
