One Piece (2023– )

First episode was ok
4 September 2023
I liked the first episode as a spin-off. Casting was good, but that's it. From the second episode forward, it's just a regular cheap bad series, doing a One Piece cosplay. When people mentioned the budget was like that of GOT, I guess they meant the budget of a single GOT episode to create the whole show, or maybe they spent all that money on marketing, because it was certainly no employed on the show. Just another bad series not worth anybody's time. This is One Piece "interpreted" by an idiot. A poor idiot at that. People saying the series is great are clearly lying, or not reliable. Maybe this is the first tv show they have ever watched and they'll probably change their opinions when they discover something like HBO.

Perfect for its proposal
16 December 2022
This anime is probably not for everybody, but if you're into it, I'd give it 10 starts.

Silly jokes. This is not trying to be an epic, just a passtime about young delinquents in Japan.

I wasn't expecting anything, but I really enjoyed it and miss it already, so I'm reading the manga and having fun there again.

Main character looks stupid in the beginning but ends up being and endearing character. Nothing in here is pretentious - this is like watching a Japanese version of Beetle Bailey. I like it that way. I'm kinda tired of every story trying to be too rich and complicated.

I can see how there's not really a lot to say about this show. It's more about an interesting experience than an intellectual achievement. Anyway, if you like old anime and Japanese culture, this anime is great company for a couple of hours, getting to know one more badass classic legend from Japanese manga.

This is amazing
2 February 2022
This movie having such a low note is yet another evidence IMBD makes no sense anymore. Probably the best animated movie in many years, with a very nice story and some profound discussions. But too many people today are in the church of "I can't understand it, so I don't like it and it must be bad". Ask the people here writing bad reviews to write a better story and see what you get. These are people who go to a museum and complain because there are no pictures of flower vases and beautiful kids playing with dogs.

Cowboy Bebop (2021)

To be fair, I could only take 5 minutes
24 November 2021
What's up with this? It seems like Cowboy Bebop was used as simply an excuse to make another show. This is not "noir", but goofy. Maybe it has some cool stuff to it - I don't know. But I wasn't at all interested. How can a sophisticated series today start by villains complaining about corporations? Yeah, sure, that is totally the talk of crazy people, uh? I can hear, in my mind, the rich people who paid for this movie talking among themselves: We start with these crazy people who don't like corporations, because they're crazy! And then we get some cowboys to fix it... Some other rich guys askes: Sure, but what kind of cowboys are we talking about? Other dude says: They are cartoon cowboys...

Amazing, gorgeous movie

This movie is amazing. It demands certain maturity to enjoy and understand it, but for a mature audience this movie is a killer. A work of art.

Great series

What an amazing series. It seems like people have their guards down on barber shops. You don't usually get such an effortless deep dive into human societies. This is very eloquent footage indeed.

Still a good show
14 January 2020
Berserk is one of the best comics ever and it was going through an amazing improvement when this tv series arrived. Naturally, people were frustrated because the quality of the animation was "not amazing", but the story is so good, that even with poor direction and graphics, it is still a good show. We all wish teams like the one in the first season of One Punch Man would created a deserving version, but I'm just glad to see these parts of the story animated. I've been following the comics for decades now and we rarely see a new chapter, so I do believe it's great to have these animations available.

Laughing so hard
1 December 2019
This movie is amazing. I was actually kinda frustrated about something, but that was my own fault. I was led to believe one of the characters would have a greater impact on the story - but those were my own crazy theories and the movie was not about that. But it is an amazing movie. It plays a lot with the audience's expectations, so I guess the way not to like this movie is trying to force your own expectations, instead of just enjoying the ride. Amazing actors. Amazing scenes. The ending is really, really good. When I understood what the movie was actually about, I was laughing so hard, it felt great. Another great movie from Tarantino. I don't even watch Hollywood movies anymore. Japanese anime and Korean cinema are way better. I didn't have much expectations about this movie being a great movie. But it was.

Gintama (2005–2021)

Just another 10 star review for Gintama
26 November 2019
I'm just another person here to tell you this show is amazing, though difficult to start. I abandoned it twice, before I got to the point of "Ok, now I see why so many people say this anime is amazing."

It is amazing.

I don't think the first episodes are actually bad - I think I was the one who wasn't ready to understand and enjoy the show yet. It certainly gets a lot better and it doesn't take long - but as the story unfolds and amazing plots and jokes come along, there is also an understanding that comes slowly, from which a whole world of subtlety and nuances become accessible. This is what made the show amazing to me.

At the same period of time I was watching the first 100-and-something episodes of this show, I was also reading "The Complete Works of Zhuangzi" (a famous book from Taoism, that later would mingle with Buddhism in China and, eventually, become Zen Buddhism is Japan). It was a great combination.

The books describes the heart of the philosophy that later would give birth to Zen Buddhism - an important part of the Japanese culture, that helps to better understand the anime - and the anime demonstrates, in modern terms, some of the most sophisticated applications of that philosophy at practice. Even if it is fictional, it depicts behaviors and situations we can understand and relate to.

One Punch Man (2015– )

Just amazing
29 July 2019
The first season is impressive and I was disappointed when they changed staff for the second season. The animation is not THAT good, I mean, which other series is? But it is still good animation and the story is so good it doesn't even matter. Amazing characters. Amazing fights. Amazing dialogues. Amazing jokes. The only reason not to watch this show is if you have a lot of prejudice against animation. If you like Disney Movies and Marvel movies, stop wasting your life with that garbage and come to anime. This is an amazing show. "Mob Psycho 100" is from the same author and the first season of the animation is also insane good. Both are among the best anime out there, like Hunter X Hunter, Berserk (1997 / 25 episodes), One Piece, Baccano!, Shigurui etc. The only problem with One Punch Man is that it has too few episodes. I wish I could watch it for months.

Misleading genre
8 March 2019
This is not a comedy and should not be listed as a comedy, because the movie isn't funny. It has a couple of good laughs, sure, but a comedy movie? No way. I was very confused. I was expecting some Black Dynamite, but instead got a black Christmas movie, with a couple of Santa Cops. It took me about 2 hours into the movie to understand it should have been listed as "science fiction".

It can be a good movie, I guess, if you don't know any better. It's not a bad movie either, just mah.

Metaphor

Melioda's cooking is like a metaphor representing Nanatsu in general, and particularly this movie: it looks amazing, and it tastes bad.

Amazing work of writing and animation
9 July 2018
Amazing anime. It's a grown up anime. It's harsh. But it's also touching without being kitsch. This is an anti-kitsch, loving and touching rash story. Beautifully made.

It suffers from lack of technology, of course. Even the plot won't follow modern graphics of tension and release. This is old fashioned. It's like reading a book. One of my favorite shows.

My fellow reviewer is the main reason I'm writing this review. He couldn't understand "the cartoonish design of the seven kids" and why wouldn't they grow, so I want to give him my thoughts on that. Read his review, for a detailed commentary on other aspects of the show - it's a very good review.

Here we go:

Cartoonish kids are supposed to be cute. These are the ugliest kids I've ever seem in animation. It IS unsettling. I think that's part of the plan. They are poor. It's a sick world. They are ugly kids.

And they DO change, as time passes. Specially the kid with the big teeth and the older kid, Taro, they change a lot during the 79 episodes. But they won't grow. They don't have food. Poor kids don't grow properly. They're underdeveloped. They are not normal kids. They are poor kids. I think that's the underlayment to those kids and I think it's heartbreaking.

That's some sophisticated way to deal with children in cartoon. This show is the opposite of kitsch and it's harsh, but it's not pessimistic. That's what's special about it. It's uplifting and full of hope and wisdom and lessons about overcoming problems.

It's a wonderful work of art.

Also, great music.

Master storytelling
26 September 2017
I had no expectations towards this series and I was so glad to be surprised. The story is amazing. Very funny and interesting. Best master ever. I really like One Punch Man, but I'll have to agree that this is better. After seeing Mob Psycho, it's very clear the author was taking this one to heart and One Punch Man was just something to have fun with. This is serious writing, even if the show is kind silly. I hope he can keep both series going. This one is a treat to people who like well crafted stories.

Berserk (2016–2017)

Tough spot
3 June 2017
Berserk - the manga - is so good that even this show has to get at least more stars than average. It's great to sit down and see how the story goes after the eclipse. I have been reading the manga for many years now, and I'm very glad there's a new animation going.

Having said that, the animation is awful. It's poorly directed, poorly edited and the graphics are ugly - which is particularly sad because the art in the manga is so great.

What to say about a series that just launched a flashback episode after only 20 episodes released? I mean, half of this flashback episode just retold us (with repeated clips) what we JUST SAW in the last 5 episodes of the show.

It's embarrassing the way they take one bad decision after the other.

The overall impression is sloppy, untalented and lacking. But the story is so good that you will still get to enjoy it, if you have watched the 1997's series and would like to keep going, or if you are already a fan of the manga.

Just another bad movie
6 June 2013
This is not at all a good movie. I'm guessing the other reviews come from people involved in the production. I'm also guessing this is a movie from college kids who read two chapters in class and think they understand cinema. Attempts to simulate or reference westerns are phony and "soap- operash". Maybe one or two good shots - but 100 monkeys with a 100 typewriters... and so on...

The movie tries and fails. If it hits something during a few seconds, it changes nothing. I felt like watching a bad soap opera, written by a kid who knows nothing of life - with nothing to say - and filmed by a pretentious advertising professional. Lots of sex scenes to see if teenagers will feel something. Not even these sex scenes are fine - seems like the guy wants to be a seller and an artist at the same time. Naturally, he achieves neither.

C'mon...
10 August 2010
It's watchable, but quite silly. For starters, it's in Japanese, but somehow it's a Chinese flick, with people flying, armies of 7939240923748293710238 soldiers, huge palaces with colossal rooms and so on...

Oscar Wild once criticized somebody's tie saying one must be deaf to wear it. This movie is like that tie. Too much contrast for the highly insensitive. It's like the dream of a 12 year old kid dreaming of sword fighting and moral values. There are some samurai stormtroopers as well...

Just silly. It's like a bad anime, mostly with real people delivering bad acting and random killing after reluctance to kill.

Brüno (2009)

It's outrageous
11 December 2009
I actually just wanted to write "Outrageous" and leave, but IMDb comment guidelines ask me to fill at least 10 lines of text. It's alright. I'm not a big fan of Jackass and this X-treme-everything that's being going around for some time - I guess I'd like the movie more if I were into that. But you got admire someone's gift for being subversive as Sacha Baron Cohen. Even if anti-fashion has become a fashion itself, nobody should have to go so far just to proclaim himself a bad-boy. I do think Sacha Baron Cohen is an artist, since his Ali G Show. This movie is like watching an angry madman - an incredibly funny madman - something like a Pollock of comedy movies.

If you relate to the parents trying to make their babies famous, or to the rednecks, the gay-converter preacher man and so on, I hope you hate this movie, and I'm glad to let you know it was almost touching for me watching Brüno play with you for our amusement:)

Good reviews are a joke
2 November 2009
This is one of those "out of the cartoon" horror movies that supposedly came out of old horror magazines. These movies are usually quite stupid, but I like them anyway. This would be a nice thing, if it was a nice move - but it isn't.

There's no scary moments, no laughs, no nothing. Just some very silly non-entertaining stories. This isn't a movie for adults, and kids wouldn't like it either. It's quite obvious the good reviews were manufactured by the studio - maybe some director's relative and so on. I was also mislead by the high IMDb score and just wasted my time.

You can watch it if you're curious - I know how does that feel. But don't expect much - for you surely also knows how bad it feels to get frustrated.

Just awful
24 August 2008
Silly movie for kids - if you're into feeding your kid with a lot of nationalist bullshit. The plot is childish, with a lot of childish solutions for every tension. If keyboards came with a bank of sounds called "Cinema" - with a button for "Comedy release melody", or "Action time" and "Moment for love", they could actually just use the music from this movie. Horrible acting. Nicolas Cage, I guess, tries to be a cartoon character with his face at some point. At least he is trying... Ed Harris just stays there with a serious face and makes his money. A lot of silly unreasonable puzzles involving US History trivia. I watched the movie and gave it two stars. Then I realized there was one of those useless outoftheplot final scenes. I watched it and changed my vote for a single star.

Versus (II) (2000)

Do you like John Woo and Tarantino? Do you like zombie movies?
22 December 2007
These are questions you should ask yourself if you're planning to watch this movie. 'Cause I read quite a few people here saying they hate Versus, and that it's stupid, that they don't get it, the worst movie they ever saw, and so on... Guess they don't watch a lot of movies. And I'm sure they don't like shooting movies, or they don't like fight movies, or zombie movies, or they don't like any of them - maybe they even don't like movies at all! So, if you're one of these persons, you shouldn't waist your time here - or shouldn't waist this movie with your time. This is about people getting killed or hit, not because it's necessary to the plot, but because it's funny. About characters doing gestures and poses not because they should, but because it's stylish.

If you don't like it, well, what a pity! But maybe you should consider that there's nothing wrong with the movie itself, but just a limitation in your ability to appreciate things. I watched this movie during the night and had to control myself all of the time not to laugh so hard I would wake up all of my neighbors.

Besides, the fighting is great. The main character is great - probably born in Dostoievski's mind or something. The villain is great. The cop who knows everything is great. I've recommended this movie to all of my friends already. Now I recommend it to you.

Watch it, if you do like John Woo and zombie movies. It's great.
