Barbie (I) (2023)

One word to sum up this movie : Easy.

I was really looking forward to watching this movie. Great cast, great global hype, and the feeling that it wants to go further than just a "girly" Barbie movie.

As a matter of fact, I was quite disappointed. While the message that is carried in this film is really important, I think that it was just to easy. It only talked about things we already knew, and not in a subtile or in a new way. I think it could have been so much more interesting and impactful. The scenario is also easy, you already know how it is going to end in the first 15 minutes. No surprises.

Nevertheless, I must mention the great cast, costumes, sets and music. But in the end, it's just a colorful feel-good movie, that is empty inside. Mid. 5/10.

Sinister (I) (2012)

Good luck sleeping at night

How long has it been since we've been truly scared by a horror movie ? I know it has been a long time for me, juggling between teen horror movies that are filled with jumpscares and old scary movies that just aged badly. Therefore, I was happily surprised to notice how scared I was watching Sinister.

Even though it uses the classic initial plan (family moving in a murder house), this movie has a great story (which can be rare in these kinds of films) where you really try to understand what is going on, while worrying for the main character at the same time. You can observe through the whole movie the situation of the family getting worse and worse. The tension is unbearable.

Sinister is a bloodcurdling horror movie, just as all horror movies should be, combined with an interesting dark mystery (althouh quite usual, if I may). Overall, a great scary movie. 8/10.

Triangle of Sadness (2022)

The art of satire

You have probably never seen a movie like this one. Its craziness is simply undeniable, juggling the grotesque to perfection to paint an unflattering picture of the highest social castes. But while one could be reluctant to see yet another moralizing movie where "the rich are the bad ones and the poor are the good ones", Triangle of Sadness succeeds in going further. Indeed, every protagonist can be made fun of as, through the movie, they all reveal their flaws and their greed.

However, the movie remains first and foremost a clever satire of the highly wealthy. They give ridiculous speeches, make senseless demands and look down on the boat crew. Also, the great acting helps bringing humor in this sometimes blood-curdling picture. Finally, seeing how every character evolves through the various events is really interesting for this purpose.

The message is that money and power pervert you, going with the usual critique of capitalism. While this theme is quite recurrent, the odd way this movie brings it makes it very interesting, shouting out loud what we all already know. 7/10.

1917 (2019)

An immersive journey into the trenches

The first thing that makes this movie unique is its shooting style. Indeed, the whole movie is shot in sequence. While it may seem odd at first, this shooting technique gives the spectator the sensation of being with the protagonists, right in the trenches, living with them the horror of the Great War. This permits us to have a new look at this period and to better understand it.

About the scenario, it fills extremely well its purpose: the goal is to get the spectator implied and worried, therefore accentuating the immersive experience. You feel like you are with them, trying to survive and to fulfill your mission. I even surprised myself wanting to physically help the protagonists in their journey.

The shooting style combined with the original scenario make this movie a real experience of what it was like in the trenches. Overall, it is a great war movie, which can be described as unique compare to what you are used to see. 8/10.
