The Summit (I) (2023– )

Much better than given credit for
30 May 2023
This reality show is actually quite tense and interesting, showing how far people will push their physical and mental limits whilst also disregarding their basic moral principles and back stabbing each other, especially their closest friends all for some cash that's not even guaranteed in any way whatsoever to the most physically fit, mentally capable, honest or respectful person in the group. This show does one thing right and that is keeps us on the edge of our seats. I can't believe how much of a gamble these real life contestants are willing to make on their mind, body, reputation and their souls, all for a little bit of cash that's far from guaranteed - for these reasons I find the show very interesting because it is a test of one's character and what one is willing to do for just a chance of a few hundred thousand dollars. Some of the activities the hikers are required to complete to move on forward are also very tense and creates an entertaining element to the show. I've been hooked to the show from the beginning and will be finishing it off this week. Looking forward to the finale and seeing which hikers make it to the top of the mountain summit in the New Zealand Southern Alps range.

Mann's imperfect masterpiece - Time is Luck
13 February 2023
Having recently watched this film again I really can't understand the hate around it. Maybe it has something to do with the extreme production and shooting stuffs up there were on set, Foxx's overly precious attitude to making an action flick, Farrell's daily drunken and drugged up turn up to work or maybe even Mann's frequent changes to the script resulting in poor planning. Regardless its a bloody masterpiece nonetheless. In fact Farrell is flawless and delivers every line with utter perfection. The story is relatively easy to follow but yet it spends so much time on character development and I was so invested and concerned for the characters in the movie myself.

As Farrell's love interest tells him 'Time is Luck' meaning he should know when to stop, particularly when ahead as you never know when the tables turn against you so quickly - you could be injured, die or be arrested any day...once you're ahead it's better to quit.

In the end enough is done to close the loop on the initial villains introduced and for the characters to learn some valuable lessons about their personal and professional lives conflicting and ultimately colliding head on, all whilst watching some of the most intense and emotional Mann-esque drama and action scenes that have been filmed in almost the last 20 years. The action sequences and the the soundtrack throughout the film are simply epic to say the least and one thing is for sure throughout which is that all the mishaps of pre production and filming were certainly not evident in the final cut - this movie is as realistic as they come whether it is a close resemblance to the TV series let's just put that aside for a minute because who really cares if the movie is really that good? The movie sent chills down my spine at certain points due to the intense development of characters and feeling of empathy for them - I think it is about time that Mann regained his confidence after this failed in perspective only film which I personally think is almost as great a masterpiece as Heat is in its own right.

Season 2 so much better than the first...and they axe it!
17 December 2021
As good and original as season 1 was after watching season 2 it appears s1 merely created a lot of background context and s2 built on it every way possible.

S2 moves to much more emotion, violence, espionage and drama with so much more backstory about how the two worlds came to be and indigo, the terror group from the other side.

This show may be about 2 'worlds' but it may as well be about 2 countries the way that management 'negotiate' terms is so chilling to reality.

In the end all this war and chaos simply because on 'one family feud' as Jk Simmons puts it...the evil doings of human nature, science and greed.

American Rust (2021–2024)
10/10
Much better than critics give it credit for
18 October 2021
Six episodes in and I would say this show is amazing! The acting is superb and the plot is unfolding nicely. Jeff Daniels should definitely consider making some more crime dramas. I like how the detail behind the murder is revealed early on already and the story is able to continue developing showcasing the tension between the characters. It is very interesting in that after we as the audience discover the truth behind the murder, it is foreshadowed that the justice system will prosecute the wrong person. But is it justice to throw the real murderer in prison? Not really. In this case the justice system by doing wrong may actually be doing right somehow. And how does Sheriff Del fit into all this? Can he figure out the truth for better or worse. The themes presented in this show make us consider the true purpose of the justice system, its many flaws and also its many fruitions. However, in the end we may have to take justice into our own hands to achieve true justice! But then our fate will be sealed just the same!!

Edit: for anyone who feels this is a murder mystery... consider the title American Rust and the summary of the plot re: Rust Belt. It is much more than a simple murder mystery.

'Fictional' North East America suffering from poverty, population decline, and lack of infrastructure and employment opportunities.

Leading to more crime, dangerous drugs, street dealers and a justice system which is extremely flawed. Enter the fictional Del Harris, our human but flawed and compromised Chief of police, who - because of his relationship with the suspect's Mother - pledges to discover the Real Truth.

In my personal opinion, this show has improved each episode onwards, despite the somewhat uncomfortable themes it presents and some scenes which can be quite graphic in violent or sexual detail, it is by no means here to glorify what is happening in this part of America. As a sombre series, it does extremely well!!

Bosch (2014–2021)
10/10
Simply the best TV show ever!
6 January 2021
This TV show is amazing. It is amazing because everything about it is so perfect. The creator Michael Connelly arguably creates the most wonderful, believable and realistic characters. I'm not talking about simply the main character Bosch who mind you is played by a spectacular Titus Wellliver - not sure why he has not won an Emmy yet. Nor am I talking about the extraordinary supporting cast played by the entire LAPD unit. Each character and actor literally brings to life a unique personality. No character is two dimensional. Even the smallest unimportant extra is given so much depth about their perspective or involvement in the story.

I have binge watched seasons 1-6 in anticipation of season 7. It is disappointing to know that such a tense and gripping realistic police procedural drama is coming to an end after next season. I think it is fair to say each season has improvements on the previous in many ways, the show seems to have gotten better as it has developed given that as a viewer so much is invested in the recurring characters. However, I think Seasons 3 and 4 are probably best given the large interaction between other divisions within the LAPD and the very dry humour between the detectives as they solve their respective cases with their own priorities. Season 5 is also noteworthy because it has some of the best court room submissions ever witnessed on TV.

The best thing about Bosch is that no season leaves you hanging. Each season has a natural logical and satisfying solution to it's main and sub plots. Even though sometimes justice may not prevail, it is certainly due to no error of the flawless Bosch - his ability to problem solve and the level of detail within each case he works is so very engrossing.

From a fan of 24, Lost and Homeland, I think Bosch has topped them all thanks to its attention to detail and very realistic insight into police procedure and the law of evidence which can be manipulated by those with money and power. In the end, however, the scales tip slightly in favour of justice.

City on a Hill (2019–2022)
10/10
Real gritty cops and robbers classic!
5 August 2020
The first season of City on a Hill was truly spectacular. Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge are both in amazing form and the pair could not make a better combo of two people who hate each other, but have no choice other than to work together.

The chemistry between these two leads is very believable and nothing is more satisfying than watching Kevin Bacon's Jackie Rohr using his dirty cop tactics to chase fame for a good cop bust, whereas Aldis Hodge's Decourcy Ward believes in fairness and justice, and he particularly is opposed to Rohr's reckless methodology. However, equally satisfying is the fact that Rohr's dirty tactics do work effectively in practice, and it is just so refreshing to watch the criminal justice system fall apart so naturally. At first, Ward sees how unethical Rohr's actions are, but later Ward realises how resorting to dirty tactics against a dirty enemy may be necessary, but still despises Rohr due to personal conflict.

The character development progresses each episode as does the plot, albeit more slowly. In fact, City on a Hill is much more of a slow burner, focussing instead on the interactions of and between Rohr and Ward, rather than the plot. The plot is always there in the background, and it does take a few episodes to start developing, but it appears much more realistic as it feels that not a moment in these characters lives are missed. Ultimately, the result is the perception of a criminal justice system that has failed its people, one in which cops are just as unethical if not worse than criminals, a war in which Decourcy believes he can instill peace and justice in, and a war in which Rohr believes is necessary to keep waging in order for basic human survival. And yet, the two have no option but to work together due to their respective professions. Talk about some great tension, along with an armored car heist plot that keeps you guessing what's gonna happen right till the very end!!

City on a Hill was a real treat for me. Something very different and special. Sure, there are many cops and robbers films and shows, but this is special because of its classy execution, real-life feel and Kevin Bacon's absolutely badass acting! Watch and Enjoy before the 2nd season is released :)

10 Stars all the way!!
31 May 2020
I'll be the first to admit, I am NOT a fan of Bradley Cooper at all. However, his efforts in this movie, as Director, Writer and Actor, have to be appreciated!! Lady Gaga brings in a surprise with her acting in fine form, and Sam Elliott is absolutely spectacular as always!! The story is a true example of a romantic drama done well. The actors literally bring every scene together. Despite it being remade and remade, this version is very true to the heart and gut wrenching; it is a perfect development of character and the blossoming of a beautiful musician through great loss and sadness. I heavily underestimated this film, as I knocked it off as another Cooper gimmick, but the full project and the film as one really works, and it is no doubt fantastic. It was competing against some heavyweight films and performances for the Oscars, but in my honest opinion, another Oscar for screenplay and at least one for actor (I think all three, Cooper, Gaga and Elliott deserved an Oscar for their respective roles) were well deserved, in addition to the Oscar won for Best Original Song. Highly recommended!! At 2hrs 16mins this film definitely commands your attention, however once you devote yourself to this film, you will fall in love with the characters, and feel happiness and sadness as they do.

Contagion (2011)

A masterpiece of its time
21 March 2020
100 years on, Contagion will be the fictional movie which mirrored the horrifying effects of the coronavirus outbreak some nine years later. This movie was so underestimated when it came out. I remember watching it and loving the immense amount of tension filled throughout. On a further viewing following the recent coronavirus outbreak, it is safe to say it is an extraordinary depiction of human desperation in a time of crisis caused by human error and carelessness (or, more particularly, lack of cleanliness). It is a profound example of how one human's mistake can have unmeasurable and devastating consequences on the entire human race. 100 years on, this will be the movie which people will be able to reminisce on, if their ancestors can survive the coronavirus pandemic.

Rockwell and Hauser's show!!
8 March 2020
Where are the Oscar noms for Hauser and Rockwell? The chemistry between the two characters, Hauser's honest, but sort of dopey character and Rockwell's kind, but ruthless legalistic attitude, is amazing. So much works between these two characters naturally. In addition, Rockwell's dark humour towards Richard Jewell is just plain hilarious. However, equally extraordinary is Hauser's typical and serious response to what the viewer might find somewhat amusing.

In this movie, you can really feel for Richard Jewell as mere kindness and honesty prove to be weaknesses to a corrupt society and legal system, but similarly it also shows that kindness and honesty can out you in touch with similar hearted people who may be ruthless enough to defend power when it may seek to take advantage of the weak. I thought Hauser was absolutely amazing in the role, and that Sam Rockwell has simply added to his list of pitch perfect performances mostly of a varied nature. Rockwell evidences his strong acting capability with so much enjoyment watching his character in every scene and the best part is he simply rocks!! He is just harsh enough to be a good defence attorney, but also just kind enough to only be ruthless to those who deserve it. I think there was no reason to omit these two fantastic performances from the Oscars this year.

The Way Back (I) (2020)

Affleck PULLS IT OFF
8 March 2020
Such a film this was! Perfect in every way. Masterful direction and editing, and absolute flawless acting from Affleck!! It is a hell of an emotional rollercoaster and it is as if Affleck was destined to play Jack Cunningham.

Freshly out of detox in real life, Affleck could not have been any more believable as the recovering alcoholic seeking redemption. The basketball scenes were phenomenal and it was definitely made easy to get interested in a sport which although may have not been the main focus of the film, it was the main medium by which Affleck sought his redemption. In fact, the results of the basketball was almost directly paralleled with Affleck's state of mind and for this reason, as the viewer we are even more interested to see the team succeed.

The amount of back story and emotion held back by the trailer is also refreshing. I mean, it is obvious the film is about alcohol addiction and redemption from the outset, but there is so much more depth to Affleck's character by the end of the film. You can feel the journey with him.

This film is both a beautifully written fictional story with drop dead cinematography, and it is equally a story of one man and his journey to recovery from a dark place of addiction. In the film, basketball is for Cunningham whereas acting is for Affleck. It is a poignant tale so rarely with the opportunity to be told, and it is told with such realism and attention to detail. I would highly recommend this latest drama from Affleck!!

Solid film
25 January 2020
A well directed film with Michael B Jordan and Jamie Foxx doing what is necessary for their respective roles. The film is very emotional and true to the heart, despite the message this films delivers unfortunately discrimination against minorities and poor still exist today. However, whereas the acting and direction is good enough, Tim Blake Nelson really steals the show. His acting is absolutely extraordinary!! Discrimination today is not simply colour or race based, it is based against minorities and poor whoever those classes of people may be. Although this film sheds significant light on the issue, it is disappointing to know that in reality the poor and minorities will always find the legal system more challenging and discriminatory.

Flawless depiction of family violence
2 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is most definitely movie of the year!! The acting from Adam Driver and Scarlet Johansson is impeccable. As much as I love Scarlet as a versatile actor, I could not help but despise her character. Woman who has it all - a husband who cooks, cleans, is a wonderful father and is able to provide for the family financially. Most importantly, a husband who shows restraint at his wife's wild behaviour and not for one moment falls to her level. And yet, she tears him apart financially, physically and emotionally all in the name of self entitlement.

Lawyers are the only winners in this movie, but yet it shows why amicable separation is absolutely essential for a peaceful breakup with flawless direction, amazing script and phenomenal acting performances throughout.

Relocation of children is one of the most difficult personal and legal battles the left behind parent can face, and Nicole in this movie made it an impossible task for Charlie to be a father without turning his life upside down. Why? For control. Charlie foresaw it all, but it was inevitable because of Nicole's behaviour, or to give her the benefit of the doubt, ignorance.

The best aspects about this movie is that it keeps the viewer engaged all throughout, the acting is utterly superb, and it keeps you hoping for a happy ending to Charlie's extreme struggles as a father, but as the movie ends we learn that Charlie is yet again a victim of Nicole's controlling behaviour but he is willing to compromise for the happiness of the child. It is an absolute emotional rollercoaster. It is a devastating watch for a father, mainly because it is such a real and raw depiction of marriage, separation, divorce and the business of lawyers and courts.

It is without question a 10/10 for its flawless direction, acting and ability to keep attention thanks for a script which brings meaning to every word spoken. I would be very surprised if this doesn't take home at least some Oscars, but most of all I think Adam Driver's transformation from happy to sad, from calm to stressed, is an unfortunate joy to watch on screen.

A welcome addition to the Terminator 'trilogy'
3 November 2019
Although Terminator Dark Fate may not satisfy fans as much as the epic masterpieces T2 and the earlier T1, there is still really a lot to like about Dark Fate.

In my opinion, fans may be too hard on Dark Fate for the change in story perspective, but I think it is very refreshing and much better than any other Terminator movie made after T2.

Despite what many say about the lack of character development, there is plenty in Dark Fate. Without going too far and giving away spoilers, the Dark Fate storyline is possible to continue straight off T2 without watching any in between Terminators. Dark Fate opens up a world where although one set of circumstances (T1 and T2) may stop Skynet from destruction of humanity, there is always potential for another threat to rise, especially when humanity creates it. In this sense, 'judgement day' may ultimately be inevitable. However, to counter this, Dark Fate also creates more than the concept of the end of the world; it creates the power of conscious and choice, and it shows how even a Terminator can acquire a 'conscious' per se, although it may not operate the same as that of a human. It is also interesting to note how the Terminator conscious grows intrinsically, after a certain or final mission is fulfilled, and there is awareness of the capacity to 'grow' and find 'purpose' in life.

Add to this plenty of dry humour, especially from Arnie, insane amounts of satisfying science fiction action that feels real thanks to the mature rating and gore factor, and enormous and visually impressive CGI battles that make you feel like you are right in the midst of Terminators, half human cyborgs with a conscious, and augmented humans.

Terminator Dark Fate may not be the 'masterpiece' sequel T2 was, but it is definitely a welcome addition to the Terminator 'trilogy' and it creates the possibility of a unique, but similar storyline expanding with new characters in a new universe.

A wonderful taste of married life
14 October 2019
What a beautiful portrayal and fantastic ending to a magnificent couple!!

Moving on from being young sweet hearts in Before Sunrise to confused adults in Before Sunset, we now get a taste of experienced and mature lovers.

This trilogy is without a doubt the best fictional, but realistic love story ever told in the history of cinema. Considering that the first and second films were about falling in love and confirming that love, the third film is about maintaining that love.

Before Midnight is just another day with the beautiful Celine and Jeese. No doubt, nine years on their relationship has had its ups and downs. Even with our most loved ones, we sometimes have difficulties communicating and this can cause undue stress on both people. Before Midnight is about love again, but in this film the love is much deeper as it doesn't evolve from initial spark or long lost lust, but it evolves from resolving differences and conflict. We all have different personalities and to be closest with your romantic partner means there will sometimes be clashes, but in the end love will mean you are each willing to compromise to continue having moments just like that initial spark.

Before Midnight can deliver this message with powerhouse performances by both Hawke and Delpy in what is a very believable romantic fairytale, quite possibly the best trilogy about love: what it means to fall in love; to sacrifice for love; and to compromise for love, because love is what inspires true selflessness.

Joker is a representation of modern societies troubles
9 October 2019
The masterpiece behind Joker is multifaceted, which is exactly why it is a masterpiece. It has flawless acting, perfect directing and real, gritty revelations of real life. If anyone thinks this movie is bad because it suggests we should feel empathy towards Arthur despite his evil actions, they are part of the system which caused this trouble in the first place. Mental health does not exist in a vacuum; it is interrelated with a society and a system which does not care for people with disadvantage. Crimes rates soar and the community demands protection and justice; justice is served by detention and alienation. The cycle repeats itself until society is tricked to believing that there is a singular person to blame, but the imperfections of the system and lack of support from society is creating more Jokers than one movie discussing its subject matter. For this reason, Joker is bold, novel and technically perfect, it is a movie for the Ages, akin to that of There Will be Blood and Taxi Driver. It is a character study like no other!

PTSD at its finest!!
27 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In Rambo First Blood we got to see Rambo vulnerable due to his ptsd and struggling to adapt to civilian life.

In Rambo Last Blood, Rambo appears to have overcome his ptsd and adapted to civilian life. He has a 'niece' he feels like is a daughter due to raising her for many years, he has a good relationship with his caretaker, and he is somewhat at peace at his ranch in the middle of nowhere in Arizona with plenty of tunnels underground because he is a 'crazy man' according to his niece.

However, after the Mexican cartel becomes involved in Rambo's life, his ptsd begins to return. At first, Rambo is confused and troubled returning to soldier life, which is evidenced by his initial encounter with the cartel where he appears without a plan and is ambushed and left for dead.

Despite his deadly confrontation with the cartel, Rambo returns with nothing to lose and willing to take down any enemy at any cost, and with a much better articulated methodology of taking down the entire Mexican cartel!

And the style of execution is wonderful!! Every kill by Rambo is so satisfying, especially the kill on the cartel leader. In this move, Rambo transcends his original difficulty adapting to civilian life, and moves on to showing difficulty maintaining civilian life. Being a soldier is all he knows, and when there is nothing but death that surrounds him, it is also the most satisfying thing for him.

Rambo Last Blood is truly a masterpiece. For a man like Sly, aged at 73 making insane hits like this, who created a unique and novel character back in 1982, the ability to showcase both true emotion and action in an explosive adult rated violent bloodshed demonstrates that he is one of the greatest if not the greatest action star to ever live. Well done Stallone!!

Rambo is back!!
21 September 2019
What a movie!! Superb character development in the first half followed by an action packed second half. Definitely not over the top for a Rambo movie in my opinion. I mean it is no doubt violent and I had to look away on occasion due to the brutality of the violence. However, it is also realistic and if one man ever had to take down an army there is no question it would be done just like the way John Rambo did in this movie. The action is very stylish and graphic. There is essentially an epic killing move for each villain which is simply amazing. A movie full of heart which shows all the death Rambo is surrounded by but he must continue to survive by all means in order to exact revenge. A welcome addition to the Rambo movies indeed!

Unique and compelling
18 September 2019
Not sure why there are so many negative especially very negative reviews for this film. This is a very real, gritty crime drama with plenty of character development.

Mel Gibson in particular is phenomenal. His chemistry with Vince Vaughn appears true and meaningful. Although both characters ultimately make bad choices, it is still possible to understand and sympathise with them due to back story. In addition, the film has so many twists and turns, that even Mel Gibson's character acknowledges at one point there is no way they could have imagined the situation turn out like it did and he does not know what to call the situation as it so unexpected and bizarre, but yet realistic.

It is a very violent and character driven film with plenty of run time. There is no CGI or extraordinary special effects in this film, it is a great crime drama and an even better one due to the significant character development. It has a great story and script, and for this day and age it is definitely unique and unexpected.

Quentin Tarantino's fantasy film
4 September 2019
This is a film which is designed to show off creative directing technique. Tarantino paints such a beautiful image of 60's Hollywood in the form of Sharon Tate, and using his own imagination, presents Hollywood how it would have been had his version of events unfolded. The film is representative not only of 60's Hollywood, but the survival of it, at least from the perspective of the director.

Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio are two variable fictional characters inserted into a backdrop of 60's film culture and Manson family madness. In this sense, they represent Tarantino's imagination and how Hollywood may have been had they been real people.

Much of the film has amazing cinematography and great costume design - it is like being transported back in time into a believable 60's Hollywood era. However, as unique as it is, many people also criticise Tarantino's apparent imagination, which is depictive of over the top and unnecessary violence. I personally did not find it to be Tarantino's most violent film, but it's also not his best. It did feel somewhat lengthy, and, despite for some good scenes throughout, it did not feel very dialogue driven like many of Tarantino's previous films. Brad Pitt and his dog definitely stole the show in the end, and it is fair to say Brad Pitt was in his best form in this film.

Go away the Haters - the Lion King Rocks!!
17 July 2019
Always when a repeat movie is made there is critique about about the remake not reflecting the original accurately. Now, when the Lion King movie resembles the original in almost mirror like fashion, there is critique about the modern version not having enough originality.

All I could ever have asked for is my favourite childhood movie of all time remade with such technical perfection and gorgeous CGI. Sure, the animals are photorealistic, but the visuals are stunning and it is no doubt an unforgettable journey through Africa. It is by no means THE original movie, but there is plenty to appreciate here.

What an amazing film!! Costner and Harrelson together play their respective characters so seamlessly and the chemistry between them so natural. Gorgeously directed with a beautiful script. The film is 2 hours long but moves at the perfect pace. It is always engaging, the journey of the Rangers is extraordinary and the ending is really satisfying. No complaints against this film at all.

Finally something so refreshing!!
28 January 2019
This movie deserves to win Oscars for every nomination. It has a great message, extraordinary screenwriting and even better acting from the two leads. Peter Farelley is a genius himself. The perfect mix of comedy and drama, but it feels so natural thanks to the amazing chemistry of Viggo and Ali. There is not one scene which feels unnecessary or even exaggerated. It is like stepping back in time to 1962 with emphasis on what is really important in life: family, dignity and being true to oneself. There are many movies which try to convey such messages, but none so seamlessly. As important as these messages are, this movie gets a 10/10 because the journey of the two lead characters can be appreciated even more, many thanks to the script, directing and of course the acting. Best movie of the year in my opinion.

Good but destroys unbreakable
27 January 2019
The problem with this film is it gives a new context to unbreakable. You can't forget it or dismiss it. The best thing about unbreakable was the mystery behind Willis. It wasn't so much the ending per se or the 'twist' that ruined it for me. It is more so that this is literally a superhero movie. It started off well, excellent acting. However too much talking, not enough character development for Willis and an ending that only superhero fans will love.

The most beautiful film ever made
18 January 2019
There is no question that is the most beautiful and arguably the best film ever made. Ever. Not in the year it was made, not in the decade or even the century, but ever. Everything in the film is perfect. Every scene captured with immense attention to detail and visually appealing to even the most somber viewer. I had the pleasure of viewing the 4 hour version which felt in no way too long or dragged. Every scene with such emotion and passion, such relatibility, such understanding of Native Indian and white settlement culture, and such realism, showcasing not only gory battles, but genuine relationships forged in real time. It is literally a story like no other.

The cinematography is jaw dropping. Best cinematography in a film in my opinion. The frontier. The landscapes. The beauty that no longer exists. As Dunbar himself said he wanted to see the frontier before the white settlement. And he saw it! Saw it through the eyes of Kevin Kostner in his masterpiece achievement.

Kevin Kostner really should have won the Oscar for his Acting. I mean the film won 7 Oscars maybe the Academy thought it should not get greedy, but the fact is Kevin Kostner played the role of a lifetime. He transformed into Lieutenant Dunbar. Even though some scenes are clearly 'Hollywood' you forgive it because the film is perfect. It is flawless in everyway. You can watch this film 1000 times over and you couldn't find a single fault in it. It's my favourite movie of all time.

Give Bale a leading actor Oscar already!!
6 January 2019
This is potentially Christian Bale's greatest acted film ever. I completely disagree with any review referring to this movie as boring, too long or otherwise not engaging. It is filled with draw dropping cinematography, extremely compelling script, very interesting and topical plot, superb directing and flawless acting all round, especially Christian Bale. Yes, it can be 'slow,' but yet every scene feels necessary and purposeful. A fantastic analysis of life, death, love, hatred, redemption and forgiveness, faith and the power to hold onto hope despite many periods of despair. I know this may not be the particular movie Bale wins a leading Oscar for, but this is definitely the movie he deserves it for. I could not think of a better actor to play his character. Throughout the entirety of the film, the character interactions feel so real, that most viewers will forget they are watching a film and simply appreciate it for what it is - the best portrayal of a gritty, but humane Western in a very long time.
