Daredevil (2003)
Weakest of the current crop of superhero movies by far
I've never particularly liked or disliked the character of Daredevil in comic form, in fact my only real exposure to him has been a few Punisher crossovers, so I went in to this movie with an open mind. Unfortunately, while not completely terrible, the whole film is a bit of a mess.
The director seems to have no idea what tone he was going for. At one point we see Matt Murdock suffering for his life as a vigilante, scarred, popping painkillers and hurting but for the rest of the movie he leaps around like Spiderman on steroids and shrugs off stab wounds. Some scenes are like a Diet Crow, featuring heroic posturing on gothic churches and dark and dingy rooftops while characters like Bullseye and the playpark fight between Murdock and Elektra are so ridiculous they jar with the rest of the movie. The action scenes themselves are tired and rely on too much bad wirework and CGI trickery that already looks dated.
There's some entertainment value to be had here, but compare it to just about any recent comic book movie from Blade to X Men 2 and Daredevil comes off as nothing more than a poor imitation.
Hung bou yit sin ji Dai tao gwai ying (2001)
One of the creepiest films I've ever seen
I'd consider myself a pretty jaded horror fan. I almost never get frightened or creeped out by a horror movie these days. Despite being hailed as one of the scariest films of all time, Ring didn't frighten me much but I was impressed enough by it to start hunting down more Asian horror movies.
I had read one or two good but vague things about Horror Hotline so when I saw a copy I pounced on it and watched it at 2 in the morning.
It made my hair stand on end.
Literally.
The directors responsible for the bilge that passes for horror coming out of Hollywood these days should be made to watch Horror Hotline and hang their heads in shame. Any horror fan who likes dark, mature, serious, eerie horror needs a copy of this film.
