Air Force One (1997)
One of the five worst movies I have ever seen
This movie is just plain awful. Ford is his usual wooden self, Oldman was clearly just in it for the payday, and the "plot" - such that it is - is utterly ridiculous, even by action-adventure movie standards. And when a movie hands you uninspired, two-dimensional characters and a totally unbelievable plot line, you get a movie that makes no connection whatsoever. In other words, it's boring. Forty minutes into it, I found myself looking at my watch, trying to calculate how much longer I'd have to sit there watching this dreck.
If you're looking for a way to kill a couple of hours, I'd recommend repeatedly smashing yourself in the face with a ball-peen hammer before I'd suggest that you watch "Air Force One."
The Crow (1994)
i'm no goth, but i dug it
Yeah, I liked "The Crow," and I'm way too old to be goth.
The story and acting were good, with a few exceptions, and the pacing was steady as well (again, with a few exceptions). The set design was outstanding.
But the biggest surprise about "The Crow" was its script. Specifically, the high quality of its dialogue. No, the characters didn't "talk like real people," but the dialogue was crisp, clever and just colorful enough, without any Schwarzennagerish-like throwaway one-liners. I hate those.
Battle of the Planets (1978)
You really had to be there.
The animation? Not too bad, considering it was drawn in 1972 or so. But certainly nothing special. The story? Hit and miss, mainly because BotP was made up of edited episodes of the Japanese show Gatchaman (and was therefore missing some key story elements).
So why do people - including me - love this show so much?
Because for almost anyone born between 1970 and 1976 in the US, BotP was one of the key television programs of our youth. It was exciting, exotic and captured our imaginations like nothing else on the tube.
But I think you really had to be there to appreciate it. Neutral observers would probably say that BotP just doesn't hold up after all these years, and if I had to be objective about it, I'd probably have to agree.
Still, you owe it to yourself to give it a look, just so you know what everyone's talking about.
