Kristy (2014)
Solid Slasher/Thriller
A popular horror site I follow mentioned this film as a hidden Thanksgiving gem. I took them up on the offer and was quite thrilled with the results. Even though I am not a lone college girl on a vacated campus for the holiday, I do live a solitary life, this holiday included. Which made this lonesome thanksgiving holiday flick a perfect watch this evening. Sure it's no gorefest but it is a tense slasher/thriller. Think The Strangers but done much better. No clue why this has flown under the radar with zero promotion, aside from where I found it mentioned, years after it's premier. But to the point, as a fan of the grotesque, I still found this to be a great viewing. The suspense is well done, and the minimal casting is well played. I would love to see more from this universe, and considering the ending and post credit scene, it's easily possible. I mean The Strangers even got a sequel and is currently being rebooted, at least give this story a sequel, it deserves it far more than the latter.
The Hollow Point (2016)
A surprise sleeper
Found this aimlessly scrolling through prime streaming. Patrick Wilson, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo & Jim Belushi, do you need more? If so, top notch crime thriller. Feels like a modern day western but with the cartels. Great acting all around and plot twists galore. Definitely worth a watch. Not sure how I haven't heard of this until now, this film deserves recognition.
Betaal (2020)
I want more British zombie demons!!!!!
Lets go season 2. This show was a blast and over way too soon. Like of mix of those old Blind Dead films, Evil Dead, & Demon Knight. It's dubbed, as its an Indian show, but it doesnt distract from enjoying it. I threw subtitles on and it made keeping track of the names easier. The first 2 episodes is more suspense and impending dread, the last 2 nonstop action. Turn your brain off and enjoy the ride. You can binge it in 3 hours.
Coffee & Kareem (2020)
Hilarious
I expected this to be horrible, but it was in fact quite enjoyable. Reminded me a lot of 80's Eddie Murphy buddy cop movies. This kid was so funny. He talked just like kids do at that age, vulgar and overly sexual hilarious immaturity. And let me say, anything complaining about the language and violence in a MATURE rated film should be skipped right over. There was a few racial jokes that, lets face it, were as true as they were funny. There is some great messages in it too if you look for them. Just sit back and relax and have some laughs.
Holiday Hell (2019)
Fun Creepshow-like Anthology
I enjoyed this more than any recent anthology I've seen. The stories got better with each one. The wraparound story featuring Jeffrey Combs (in a role very much like he played in Necromicon) was great. It was nice to see practical effects with barely, if any cgi. Worth a watch, especially for fans of Mr. Combs.
Bad Blood (2017)
This show floored me
I had no clue what it was about going in, as most of my studies of the mafia are US related. Did not know much about thwor involvement in Canada. Once I heard Bonanno though, I researched heavily. Much to my surprise this show was quite accurate in its events. The first season is phenomenal viewing. It does a weird thing, it is lightning fast and short, but still grabs your attention and creates a bond with the characters. I compare this to The Sopranos, but while lacking the humor and slow character developement, it still captures the same spirit. I can't even express how much this show hooked me. Its modern in its style, but still has that old school gangster feel to it. While being quite historically correct the majority of the 1st season, it takes quite a surprising turn at the end, setting it up for a completely fictional and fresh season 2. I cant wait to watch the next season, and cant recommend the first season enough. If you like mob movies, or just crime shows in general, watch this. If the thought pf watching a series deters you because of length, watch this. Short, sweet, brutal, and to the point. With a good Damn story.
