Jurassic Park (1993)
Good entertainment from Steven Spielberg
The film offers good entertainment without a particularly complicated plot. The dinosaurs and also the landscape of the island are quite impressive to look at. There are some comedic scenes, but the movie is mainly serious with a lot of action. The end of the movie turned out to be a bit too drawn out in my opinion. It was exciting, but at some point just too much action with no particular surprises. Scenes in which the humans always just escape the dinosaurs are lined up one after the other. In summary, however, film offers good entertainment and interesting special effects. I recommend this well-known work for children over 12 years.
Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler (1922)
Expressive silent film masterpiece by Fritz Lang
The film is simply magnificent. This work is one of the best silent films ever made. Rudolf Klein-Rogge in his top form, plays an absolutely insane hypnotist who is so dangerous that even at the end the military has to intervene. Of course, it's a very special film. You have to see the film in the context of the time. For example, in the scene where the prosecutor von Wenk is driving a car towards a ravine, the word "Melior" is written in the air. Nowadays, almost anyone can do something like that with an app on their cell phone. In 1922, however, this was quite new and impressive. The film is divided into two parts and goes on for over 4 hours. You should watch no more than an hour of the film a day. One should enjoy the drama and the atmosphere of the 20s. If you see too much of it in one piece, you will spoil the film and you won't be able to appreciate it. One of my favorite silent films!
One Week (1920)
One of the best Buster Keaton-short-films
Next to "The Paleface", this is in my opinion the best Buster Keaton short silent film. I very much like the idea of giving a house that can be assembled as a wedding present, this is so funny! And then the numbers for the assembly are also mixed up! Buster Keaton's stunts are so impressive to watch. Especially interesting I find the final scene, where the house is transported on a trailer and suddenly the car fails! The trailer with the house unfortunately stops in the middle of a train track. The Groom and The Bride despair, and quickly get off the tracks. They cover their eyes, not wanting to see a train running through their house. However, unexpectetly the train travels on a different track, so the house remains undamaged. The Groom and the Bride open their eyes again and are happy that the house is undamaged. But then, another train comes and runs directly through the house. The Groom and the Bride finally have to watch the crash. A must-see!
Les compères (1983)
My favourite french comedy
The film is such a great comedy. It is, in my opinion, not only the best film of the Pierre Richard and Gérard Depardieu trilogy, but one of the best French comedies I've ever seen so far. The acting of the two is very entertaining. The film is also not too over the top, it never feels unrealistic either. The wordplay and slapstick is very well done. There are also no scenes that I would call unnecessary or boring. My favorite scene is the one where Pignon goes to the bar to get his (presumed) son back. A cheeky youth tries to tease him. Pignon doesn't like this at all, so he fights back by head-butting the youth several times. Lucas comes along and wants to explain and show Pignon how he could make these headbutts even more effective. The teenager is surprised and asks the two what is going on with the fight, because he actually wanted to continue. Lucas then headbutts him so hard that the brawler is knocked out. A much too underrated film!
Barbie (2023)
Intelligent treatment of a complex topic
Anyone expecting a light comedy about the Barbie doll and her fans based on the title will be irritated. Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach unroll a crazy story around a real Barbie, in which the social roles of women and men are reflected, partly wittily, partly very seriously. I recommend the film, especially for adults, since a certain general education and life experience are required to understand the many allusions to social phenomena. I very much enjoyed the quotes from earlier film classics, such as "2001: A Space Odyssey", "The Godfather" and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". A film worth seeing!
