The Rig (2023)
Started off interesting ended being complete nonsense
Where do I start, started off interesting, solid actors, potentially solid story, was moody and a good deal of suspense, ended up by I think episode 4 being more like a carry on film.
I mean this is a disservice to Carry on Films because some of them were actually pretty good.
It literally has ever cliche going, moody protagonist, loner trouble maker with a heart of gold, Gay black dude, lesbians, people who are used to working in the some of the worst environments falling apart because they can't call someone after a day.
No one seems to have watched any films because they all start off saying "now don't go alone stick in pairs" Immediately they all split off on their own.
Everyone can seemingly do everyone else's job blah blah blah. Bad company person turns good, Bad company being Bad, I mean it's like some writer who has been watching Hallmark films since childhood wrote this stuff.
I just wish people who make this stuff would stop treating us like village idiots, we can deal with nuance, questions that might not be answered.
I can't recommend it and to be honest if you think this stuff is good the Hallmark channel is one for you.
Kleo (2022)
Quirky and fun.
Had to say I came across this whilst bored the other day, enjoyed it a lot, dark humour, captured the 80's quite well. Loved the lead actress.
Quirky like an 80's Killing Eve, binged it all.
Another Life (2019)
Only a 4 because of Katie S. *spoilers*
Well what can I say, Netflix been pumping out some really good sci-fi lately and I thought let's take a look at this. Decent looking production values, Couple of known actors and the fact I love sci-fi.....
Well I really don't know who's writing this or the person who's the "box ticker" but this is just the most unbelievable "space crew" possibly outside of Space Balls and well Space Balls was a parody..
It's literally like someone in the government has said " We really need this mission to fail "guys/girls/bit of both cuz gotta tick that box" let's get the most idiotic bunch of crew members we can for this.
Seriously who thought people would accept it? Well what do we have, angry teenager type, token fat dude, Oh hey Trans is now trendy lets make them obviously trans, second in command who basically mutinies and then tries to kill his commander basically because "he's a child and didn't get his own way" and throws his toys out of the pram.
Token Fat dude lands on a planet gets told "DONT YOU FRICKIN BRING ANYTHING BACK, YES I SEE YOU LOOKING AT THAT SOIL DON'T YOU FRICKING DARE" other guy turns his back, TFD brings stuff back and mayhem ensues......
2 minutes of some young woman talking about how she wants lots of kids.. only way to save the crew from the nasty virus TFD bought on the ship is to sterilise everyone.. jesus who wrote this stuff some 5 years old?
Apart from Katie Sackoff I literally want everyone of the crew members to die a most horrible death and even want most of the people on Earth now to die as well because literally every "smart person" in the show is actually pretty stupid...so it doesn't bode well for the "stupid" people on the planet.
Basically keep Selma Blair and Katie Sackoff and have some kind of Thelma and Louise in space thing going on.. the rest is just utter tosh. If you want proper decent Sci-Fi watch Expanse and if you want some fun Sci-Fi watch the Orville or Killjoys. If you want you brains to slowly come out of your ears because it refuses to take you seriously as a intelligent evolved host ... watch this.
*edit actually does get better after episode 5*
Magnum P.I. (2018)
Bad Casting.
Obviously I write this remembering the old series so it had a high bar to aim for. Sadly the main role casting of Magnum has just fallen way short, Tom Selleck was a man's man with a DGAS attitude to most things and the interplay with Higgins being the polar opposite.
They went for a "Teen Mag" looking type trying to be attractive because he's cute good looking not rugged good looking.
Just don't understand the casting needed someone rough and ready looking Hugh Jackman esque or that chap who got kicked off Lethal Weapon.
Can't really see this getting past a second season unless they make drastic casting changes.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
My Oh My Where do I Start..
Is this even a Star Wars film???? I have to ask, very confused after watching this 2hr "trailer".
Confused directing which seemed like 2 or 3 directors tried to make the film at the same time and then randomly got stopped by someone else and forced to go in a different direction.
Misplaced humour, bad character progression, complete whitewashing of questions you had after the Force Awakens, Leia joining the DC universe, completely surplus fight-scenes and location visits seemingly just to shoe-horn "well known" actors/actresses into the film.
Luke,Leia,Snoke being turn into parody figures. Just a strange, strange "movie".
Had high hopes after Rogue One but I'm putting this film into the "prequels" box.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Not a trekkie but this series especially epi 3 was really good.
Have to say I'm not a Star Trek fan at all, I enjoy them but I'm not a rabid cultist like some are. Have to say compared to some of the series (apart from next gen and DS9) this is much better than most especially the latest episode number 3 which I found actually very good. Don't know why some people hate this new series because it isn't like the old ones as it seems a little more "grown up" or grittier is probably a better word. Yes she needs to lose the self pity now but overall I'm happy with it.
Wonder Woman (2017)
Not bad.
Not too bad as a switch your brain off for 2 hours kind of thing. Gal Gadot does a good job and looks the part, the script is very basic and the CGI is pretty bad in parts.
If anything this film could have been improved with a R rating and when Wonder Woman starts kicking backside you can tell she's really capable of laying into people but you never actually see it.
Needed to be a lot grittier and then I think it would have been much improved.
Hap and Leonard (2016)
Really good if somewhat very dark.
Found this by accident and can't say much apart from it's really good. Was expecting it to be a little lighter from the write-ups but it came across very dark , almost as dark as the first season of True Detective.
Worth a watch definitely.
Preacher (2016)
Possibly one of the best series on at the moment.
Probably the only show I actually look forward to lately since pretty much 99% of the good series have finished for the season. Casting is great, story is zany enough to keep me interested and the last episode sets up the second series quite nicely. Just from watching it I unfortunately wish that this was made by the BBC/Channel 4 because I just can't see a lot of Americans "getting" it which unfortunately will lead to it's demise whereas the British TV seems to give series a much longer run unless it totally bombs of course. I've read reviews on here saying "things" aren't explained and I have to wonder if some people are watching the same program as most of the stuff they are saying isn't explained actually has been and quite obviously as well. Quirky and fun with great casting.
Lucifer (2016)
Redemption Song
A quite interesting show full of dark humour and a singular thread of redemption running through it. Personally I can't understand all the angst against this show I can only assume that a certain segment of society just don't like having their ingrained beliefs shaken. Basically this will end up as a tale of redemption for anyone who is willing to change regardless of their past, which to be honest is a good rule to live by.
The show itself is predictable as it can only be given the storyline but it's actually written in a snappy, obviously non too serious way and is no difference from lets says "Castle" where in reality the only difference is "who" the main protagonists are.
Actually really enjoy the show and it's sub-current of redemption for all regardless of your past. People need to lighten up and enjoy life for what it is not what you've been told it is.
Deadpool (2016)
Confused, wanted to like it but just couldn't
First of all I like Marvel/Superhero films bit of mindless escapism for an hour or two but Deadpool.....humm left me confused.
I'm a geek, nerd (albeit a rather big one)but one thing that geeks and nerds can't do is humour, Big Bang gets away with it because it's geek humour not trying to be anything but geek humour where Deadpool falls flat is it's geeks trying to be cool which just doesn't work.
The only reason I give it 5 out of 10 is because of Morena Baccarin who's woefully under used in most films. The film itself just feels like a procession of adverts spread over nearly 2 hours, couple minutes of dialogue then action scene couple of minutes dialogue then action scene rinse repeat.
If being an anti hero is as simple as just being annoying glib when everything is going to pot, then possibly the UK has around 30 million anti-hero's walking around. Sarcasm and dry wit is something Americans just can't do well (with a couple of notable exceptions, Bill Murray being one).
The whole thing just stank of laziness. Possibly a great film for teenagers and emotionally/socially immature people but as for the rest just a silly predictable and pretty unfunny film.
Not going to remark too much on the lead actor apart from the fact that he was much more interesting in the film before he actually became Deadpool when he was just Wade.
I Origins (2014)
Fairly bright start but ends up fairly dull.
Hummm where do I start, must admit I didn't know much about this film but I'm always on the lookout for new interesting plots to which I must admit this one intrigued me.
Fairly bright start, a little reminiscent of the Ninth Gate, weary lead who doesn't believe in anything but cold facts meets mysterious "foreigner" who leads down a path to questioning his own beliefs yadda yadda yadda.
Once the "love affair" was abruptly finished though the plot started going down the fairly ridiculous route. Lots of little visual clues on the sets which tried to set the scene which unfortunately was already being crow-barred in via the script.
Random characters appear and allude to having a part to play but unfortunately nothing happens, just points to the director or scriptwriter running out of ideas.
Don't get me wrong it's a decent movie and fairly interesting but there are so many holes in the science and the faith based arguments it's a bit over the top. Also the part where the protagonist just takes a small Indian girl off the streets in a taxi then into hotel into his bedroom, humm I think that's the only part of the whole film I had to question myself..I mean really? not one person said anything and the main chap thought this was a perfectly normal thing to do.....very strange.
OK film worth a watch but anyone who says this is a fantastic film really needs to watch more films. The premise is dubious, the arguments are even more dubious and the final scene is a bit silly.
