Darkness (2002)
The worst movie I've ever seen
I liked one viewer's suggestion of a root canal. He was right, it was better than watching "Darkness". I used to believe "Eye of the Beholder" was the worst schlock ever put on a movie screen, but I was proved wrong by this hemorrhoid of a film. The trailer makes it look great and there are individual scenes or shots that look like they could be from a good thriller movie, but when mixed in with this script, they continually give seconds of hope to an hour and a half of misery. The plot is very loosely constructed and the movie just ends. About 5 seconds before hand, you realize it's just going to end and you find yourself thinking "Nobody could write something that bad" and sure enough, it ends that poorly. I would pay for someone's ticket to something else just to save them the torture of this film. Spend your money on a bullet and shoot yourself, it will be more rewarding and that ending will be more interesting at parties.
Ghostbusters (1984)
Another Bill Murray classic
I can't let that other review sit here alone, especially when he doesn't know what he's talking about. GhostBusters was a great movie. Everyone who is old enough has seen this movie and is filled with great, quietly comic performances. Bill Murray, Akroyd, Ramis fill the bill just right. This shouldn't have been serious, Ivan Reitman doesn't write serious. If you want slapstick, outlandish comedy, this isn't your movie, but then Bill Murray movies never are. If you don't like Bill Murray, who makes the movie, don't bother to pick this one up. Truly worth a watch and, usually, a buy. 3 out of 4 stars. And it keeps telling me i need one more line, so here is my final line.
National Lampoon's Van Wilder (2002)
Just Terrific
I saw an advanced screening of this movie a couple of months ago and couldn't wait for it to hit DVD so I could buy it. National Lampoon is pretty hit and miss (the Vacation series notwithstanding) but this one comes through big. Yet another great college comedy about a guy who has spent 7 years in college doing it all. His wealthy, yet unattentive, father finds out he's still paying for Van's tuition and tells him he's pulling his funding of Van's joyride. Van then uses every ability and talent he has to get money to get through school, while pursuing Tara Reid, a school reporter who's pursuing Van, the most elusive student on campus, for the one interview nobody's ever been able to get. Outlandish, crude, side-splitting humor. Especially the dog and the rolls (you know if you've seen it).
Spider-Man (2002)
Outstanding
It delivers as expected and was completely worth the wait-25 years in my case. An enjoyment for Spidey fans, newcomers, and skeptics alike. The film had a couple variations from the comic history, but nothing to take away from the enjoyment of the story or characters. Special effects were on the money. Willem Defoe comes through big time as Norman Osborne about to lose his mind from his own genetic enhacement serum/gas. Maguire and Dunst have a great chemistry together as well. The only thing that takes getting used to for hardcore fans is the new look of Green Goblin, but after seeing the movie 3 times, it works for me. Bring on Spider-Man 2 and hurry!!!
Calendar Girl (1993)
Highly entertaining
Almost nobody's seen this movie, but it's secretly a great film. Funny all the way through. One of Jason Priestly's early films and he's great as in everything he does. (No not all of his films are good, but he's good in all of them). It's a movie you don't think you'll want to watch and 15 minutes in, you want to watch the whole thing. Enjoyable, very quotable, and about what every man dreams of-meeting Marilyn Monroe.
