Unfrosted (2024)
It's been a long time since I've laughed this hard while watching a movie, especially a Netflix movie.
I ran across this movie on Netflix and laughed my *ss off throughout the whole thing! Younger viewers may not catch all the jokes because they do make a lot of 1960s specific references but I found it very amusing to say the least. And the cast, Oh My God, they have everyone in the business in this movie. I just loved the casting choices but I think it's the snappy, witty writing that I enjoyed the most. This is an actual comedic movie that is both nostalgic and refreshing. It's been a long time since I've laughed this hard while watching a movie, especially a Netflix movie. I highly recommend "Unfrosted"!
Scooter LaForge: A Life of Art (2023)
Super rad if you're into artsy stuff and activism.
This movie about Scooter LaForge is super rad if you're into artsy stuff and activism. Scooter's, like, this cool New York dude who's totally grabbed the art world's attention with his wild creativity. The movie's okay, I guess. Scooter talks a lot and he's pretty interesting but there are too many people talking, and it's kinda overwhelming. I mean, it's cool to hear about his life, especially his struggles growing up, but sometimes it's like, too much. His art is influenced by, like, all over the U. S. and it's all about social issues, like AIDS, BLM and stuff, and he talks about it a lot. His art's like a time capsule, showing all these important events. Overall, it's a bit all over the place, but it's still kinda cool to learn about this edgy artist.
A Dangerous Prey (2024)
I really enjoyed this movie.
Starring TaJa Brittaney and Marlon Ladd the movie weaves a story into the harsh realities of survival amidst urban gentrification and racial tensions. The story follows Keisha and Aiden, a couple dealing with racism in their new community after fleeing urban gentrification. The film resonates with the struggles individuals face in unfamiliar territories, with Keisha's journey from prey to a formidable force against racists providing a gripping focal point. TaJa Brittaney's performance as Keisha showcases her inner strength in the face of adversity. Marlon Ladd adds depth with his portrayal of Aiden. The chemistry between the two leads make the characters relatable and engaging. I really enjoyed this movie.
Static Codes (2023)
Static Codes introduces a unique perspective that distinguishes it from other films in the indie genre.
This movie captivates audiences with its fresh perspective, a captivating storyline, and noteworthy dramatic performances. Static Codes introduces a unique atmosphere that distinguishes it from other films in the genre. The narrative unfolds in the aftermath of a traumatic incident, where the protagonist contends that his wife was abducted by extraterrestrial beings, leaving him mired in isolation and contemplating a bleak future. One of the film's standout elements is the compelling family dynamic between the daughter and Shane's paternal character, which ignites a powerful emotional impact. I recommend this movie to those seeking something novel, with a compelling narrative and genuine emotional resonance. It's not like most indie films, it's an A+.
Silent as the Grave (2023)
Silent as the Grave ain't just another flick, it's like a gritty masterpiece
Silent as the Grave ain't just another flick, it's like a gritty masterpiece, you feel me? The actors straight kill it, bringing that raw talent to the table. Kunicki, man, he's on another level as Chris - playing this documentary dude with a nerdy vibe but also giving off vibes like he might be a bit twisted and paranoid. The whole movie got that dark, noir style, shining a light on the messed-up side of being human. The storytelling is mad clever, keeping you hooked from start to finish. And the emotional depth hits you right in the feels, making Silent as the Grave a must-watch, no doubt. I loved it!
Mea Culpa (2024)
Don't believe the hype.
Don't believe the die-hard Tyler Perry fans that recommend this movie. OK sure, it's not the worst movie in the world, but seriously, it is not up to professional movie making standards. If you believe Mr. Perry can do no wrong, this movie is for you. I believe he can do better. The movie is filled with the standard Tyler Perry movie tropes that we have seen over and over and over again and honestly, the ridiculous sex scene with the paint was totally unnecessary. I will never understand why so many people are willing to accept and praise such a mediocre movie just because it has the name Tyler Perry on it.
Introspectum Motel (2021)
Well-crafted thriller with a touch of sensuality.
Introspectum Motel is a captivating slow-burning thriller with intricate layers that enthrall viewers, leading them through a maze of twists and turns. Centered around the theme of adultery, the film delves into a dark and suspenseful plot, featuring tastefully executed sex scenes that contribute to the overall narrative. The movie boasts a talented cast delivering believable performances, even in vulnerable situations. Introspectum Motel maintains a straightforward visual style that aligns with its gripping narrative, making it a must-watch for those who appreciate a well-crafted thriller with a touch of sensuality.
The Berlin Bride (2019)
The Berlin Bride" is definitely worth a watch.
What makes "The Berlin Bride" enjoyable is how Bartlett tells the story through his unique visual style. Without using much dialogue, he skillfully conveys both emotion and backstory. He even outshines silent films that inspired him in this aspect. The way he blends reality and fantasy is so smooth. Bartlett not only came up with a fantastic idea involving a mannequin but also used it purposefully to enhance the story. The storytelling is anything but lazy. The unpredictable twists in the story at the end are like the cherry on top of an already great idea. It reflects our tendency to fill the gaps in our lives and the extremes we go to feel whole again. If you enjoy wild and unconventional storytelling done intelligently, this production will bring you joy. "The Berlin Bride" is definitely worth a watch.
Broken City (2023)
Mad respect for this flick, it's the realest in the game.
Broken City ain't your typical movie. It's all about the struggle - economic grind, moral gray zones, and bold moves. This ain't your Hollywood glitz flick. Broken City is that raw, dark take on economic injustice but on a whole 'nother level. No punches pulled, it's a wild ride messin' with your feels and loyalties. The indie vibe, down and dirty, making it feel real - ain't no glossy Tinseltown here. It's smart, it's tight, with performances so real you swear you're in the streets watchin' it unfold. Broken City ain't frontin' with its indie charm; it wears it proud. Mad respect for this flick, it's the realest in the game.
This Is Your Song (2023)
"This Is Your Song" skillfully navigates a delicate balance.
Crafting a genuine portrayal of a relationship on the brink of its end presents substantial challenges. The authenticity required often exposes the messy aspects of human connections, risking the portrayal of characters as too flawed and consequently unlikable or unrelatable. However, the filmmakers of "This Is Your Song" skillfully navigate this delicate balance. The characters, though flawed, remain authentically human, and their pain resonates, creating a relatable narrative throughout. In essence, "This Is Your Song" offers much to applaud. The film is a testament to the filmmakers' ability to maintain a captivating narrative within the challenging constraints of a single-take technique. Without a doubt, it's a movie that deserves to be experienced.
Cabin Tales (2023)
"Cabin Tales," despite its modest budget, maximizes the potential.
"Cabin Tales," despite its modest budget, maximizes the potential of its remote setting and cast to deliver a remarkably cool horror story. The film is infused with enthusiasm and cleverly filmed to achieve maximum impact. The killer clown character adds an extra layer of creepiness that contributes to the overall chilling atmosphere.
"Cabin Tales" is a must-see for horror enthusiasts, showcasing how effective storytelling and creative filming can elevate a low-budget production. Don't miss the chance to experience the thrills and chills of "Cabin Tales"! I give it two thumbs up and recommend this movie.
Fighting Olympus (2023)
This film isn't just a run-of-the-mill shoot 'em up action feature.
This film isn't just a run-of-the-mill shoot 'em up action feature (although it executes that aspect impressively). The storyline is remarkably imaginative, intricate, and filled with unexpected twists and turns that kept me thoroughly engaged. Without revealing any spoilers, I appreciated the clever nods to characters from ancient Greek myths like Hades, Athena, and Medusa. Reading the synopsis for "Fighting Olympus," I assumed it would be more up my partner's alley than mine. To my pleasant surprise, I couldn't have been more mistaken. I give it two thumbs up and recommend you watch "Fighting Olympus".
Summer with the Guys (2023)
"Summer with the Guys" is a must-watch.
This cheeky and hilarious film maintains a steady stream of laughter from start to finish. Centered around four college football players who, after losing their scholarships, turn to the world of stripping to fund their return to school, the movie strikes a perfect balance between sensuality and entertainment.
The dance sequences are executed with precision, adding a dash of sexiness to the overall experience. The comedy throughout the film is sharp, contributing to the overall enjoyment. If you're in the mood for a laid-back and laughter-filled viewing experience, "Summer with the Guys" is a must-watch that delivers on its promise of amusement. This film is a delightful escape that will undoubtedly leave you entertained and in good spirits.
Solid Rock Trust (2022)
"Solid Rock Trust" is more than just a heist movie.
"Solid Rock Trust" stands out as an impressive feat in filmmaking. Rick Ives, the writer and director, exhibits commendable skill, and Dakota Curtis's camera work is notably sharp. However, it's KoKo Marshall's captivating performance that truly steals the spotlight. Set predominantly in a single location with a primary focus on one actor, the film proves to be a compelling showcase of talent.
Despite the initial premise of a high-end bank heist, the movie cleverly navigates both the intricacies of the heist and the intense character study of the lone actor. It's a testament to the film's brilliance that it seamlessly combines these elements into a smart, engaging, and intriguing thriller.
"Solid Rock Trust" is more than just a heist movie; it's a masterful blend of suspense, emotion, and mystery. The narrative unfolds with a gripping intensity that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.
As the Village Sleeps (2021)
A low budget film, but very well done.
A low budget film, but very well done. Suspenseful, trippy, fun. Great cast. The movie builds nicely and really pulls you in. I'm not always a fan of horror, too much carnage sometimes. So I was pleasantly surprised how involved I became. The plot keeps you guessing.
Despite its modest budget, this film is a standout achievement in cinematic craftsmanship. It weaves a compelling narrative that is both suspenseful and delightfully trippy, offering a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The cast delivers standout performances, contributing to the movie's overall excellence. Rather than relying on gratuitous violence, the plot keeps viewers engaged through suspense, cleverly leaving much to the imagination.
