Sanju (2018)
10/10
Good movie
25 November 2023
Movie could have been cut short by an hour. Or focused on other more interesting aspects and people in Sanju's life - his wives/family, his relationships with other big stars (Madhuri Dixit, Salman khan?).. That material is completely missing from the movie. Too much screen time for the Kamli friendship angle. Boring. The drug addiction part dragged on way too long. I wouldnt consider this movie a biopic as it was only focused on portraying Sanju as an innocent victim of the unfair media coverage. The guy has repeatedly made bad choices in his life and we are supposed to feel sorry for him. Yaawn. Melodramatic background music was annoying. Ranbir's acting was good though. Would surely win him many awards. Cant rate it more than 5 stars. But its an ok movie compared to other junk that bollywood churns out.

More of Kill Bill than Mulan
25 November 2023
Doubt, the best thing I've seen on Netflix this year.

The concept of a violent revenge story amidst the backdrop of feudal Japan was enough to attract me. The stunning, stylized animation locked me in.

From the beginning, the series plays an interesting contrast in theme. At times, it is surprisingly light-hearted and comedically-appropriate for children. Other times, viscerally violent and overtly sexual. As a whole, it seems to work (but definitely NOT recommended for children).

The titular character is amazing. Casually violent and mysterious. Simply badass. As her backstory of beauty/tragedy/anger/love is revealed, it's hard not to become emotionally invested.

The peripheral characters are hit-or-miss. They all have purpose within the larger story, but some are incredibly one-dimensional or predictable. That said, most of the main characters do show growth and complexity as the series progresses.

If you are a fan of 'Kill Bill' (and to a lesser extent, 'Mulan'), this show is for you.

Mirzapur (2018– )
10/10
Gripping story which keeps you glued to seats.
25 November 2023
Disclaimer: I am from Uttar Pradesh, who lives in Bangalore. Except for acid attack, they have covered everything in the underbelly of Uttar Pradesh.

I have given it 10 start rating. Why? Because I could connect way more than its other state viewers. As game of throne, takes its inspiration from medieval Europe, this series takes its inspiration from Uttar Pradesh of 90's and early 20's (Notice the name of CM brothers for reference :P).

Now, I have grown up in that kind of environment. But, is there any form of art which has reflected it succinctly. Omkara or Ganges of Wasseypur came close, but even they tried to tone it down a bit, and acceptable for silver screen. Producing a content for digital medium, has an edge that, they didn't have to be politically correct, just to please people - and thus tinker with the spirit of the story.

That perhaps was the best part, and I watched all the episode in a single session. A pure nostalgia. From the comfort of my room here in bangalore, I was reminiscing through my childhood. Yes Uttar Pradesh is violent. Uttar Pradesh values power. The meaning of word "Bahubali" is different there. But, Uttar Pradesh is not dull state. There is a cohesion amongst all, which makes that state lively, vibrant, and politically charged. A spectacle for someone who is watching it all from a comfortable distance - not too close to get your hand burnt in it.

And this series, gave you that very experience. Keep up the good work.

The Hungry (2017)
10/10
Dark Tragic Drama
24 November 2023
The Hungry is well paced revenge drama that is based on a tragic play by Shakespeare. I hadn't heard or read about that play before watching this movie but the screenplay and characterization certainly was influenced by the fact that it was adapted from a play. It is a dark movie that brings out the selfish side of all the characters and the meaner a person, the longer it stays alive to witness the horrors unfold. The story is well set in two business families of Delhi and Naseeruddin Shah plays the role of Tathagath, the patriarch who wants to own up the whole business, by marrying off the daughter of his deceased business partner, Tulsi, to his son, Sunny. The alliance seems misplaced as Tulsi is a widow who is way older and smarter than the dimwitted Sunny. But the lady has a mission of her own, to avenge the bloody game that Tathagath has played to her dismay. Tisca in the role of Tulsi, really stands out in the movie. Naseeruddin Shah as Tathagath does justice to the role for which he wasn't particularly fit. The support characters play out their roles well in this well edited.

Parched (2015)
10/10
Highly Realistic and Vulgar but Quality Art Cinema
24 November 2023
PARCHED REVIEW - I was never interested to watch this film, in fact i never heard about this Film before but suddenly some leak news made waves on social media and i had to download film and watch. And now after watching it i'm speechless, i don't have words to appreciate Film but still i am going to write few words so that Real Cinema Lovers won't miss a gem.

Acting - Powerpacked ! The film looks so realistic and its characters looks so real that we actually feel their Pain, Happiness and everything. Surely Best Performance of all Actresses in Film especially Radhika Apte shows her Standard actually raises it and Surween Chawla shines in Bindass Attitude.

Screenplay - Marvellous ! It never looked stretched or bored despite being Realistic and Social msg film. Some crispy and vulgar scenes to entertain masses are also there. Classes have everything to taste.

Music - Not Impressive ! But Background Score definitely works as shiner for some Serious and Meaningful scenes.

Dialogues - Hilarious ! Few will make you laugh, few will make you think and some might harass you due to its Vulgarity.

Cinematography - Fantastic ! We see Completely Realistic and real Village in Film and credit goes to Cinematographer. Even some scenes which have not been shot in Village/Set (Caves/Sand) looks Real and are eye pleasing.

Direction - Speechless ! Yes you read it right, i don't know who was Leena Yadav but now i will remember this name forever just because of this 1 Masterpiece. Direction is Highly Realistic so does its Vulgar so you have to prepare yourself to watch this Film not as a Regular Bollywood Film but as a Highly Realistic Art Cinema. Full Marks to Director and 1 Salute from me.

Final Words - Almost a Masterpiece ! Hats Off, Kudos and Salute to makers for making a Film like Parched in India. You need guts to make Art Film in Bollywood which is actually surviving on Useless Commercial Masala Entertainers but Ajay Devgn had guts and he tried it and he Won it. I watched Unrated Version so you might miss some Vulgar and Sex scenes due to Censore Cuts. Few changes would have made this Film a Masterpiece but i think it fell short and became a Classic. Quality Cinema Lovers should not miss Parched at any cost. I'm going with 8/10 Stars, Go for it to have some memorable and Realistic Cinematic Experience.

Devdas (I) (2002)
10/10
Epic story and marvelous acting by SRK, Aish and Madhuri
24 November 2023
I was lucky enough to see this in the theater in the United States when it first came out. I had seen a few Shahrukh Khan films on tape (thanks to a friend), and when I noticed "Devdas" in the online movie listings, I decided to go have a look at what would be my first Hindi film in a theater. I was the only Anglo in a packed house and I aroused as much curiosity as I felt.

I was completely blown away by Devdas, from the first moment of the opening credits to the last bitter tear on Paro's cheek. Every shot, every frame of this film is like an artist's canvas. Aishwarya Rai is breathtakingly gorgeous, Madhuri Dixit's quiet beauty increases with each scene, and Shahrukh has never looked so good. All the supporting actors are incredible, particularly Jackie Shroff as Chuni-babu and Kiron Kher as Paro's mother.

The sets and the costumes are fabulously opulent...almost too fabulous, in fact, and at times threaten to overwhelm the story. But I was far too enthralled in the theater to do anything but gasp in open-mouthed wonder, and enjoy.

The story of Devdas, a famous Indian novel written in the 1920's by Saratchandra Chattopadhyay, has been made into film numerous times by Bollywood. It is about the spoiled son of a wealthy man, who is loved by Paro, his lower caste neighbor and childhood playmate. Devdas is a weak, aimless sort who is blown about by destiny, never taking action until it is too late. He is unable to recognize his love for Paro until she has been married off to an older man and is lost to him forever. He then turns to the bottle, and to the prostitute Chandramukhi, for comfort and forgetfulness.

Dhoom 2 (2006)
10/10
Greek God and Aish great chemistry
24 November 2023
Its Hritik all the way Probably one of the rare instance where the successor is better than the predecessor. And yes, solely the credit should go Hritik Roshan for setting the screen ablaze with his electrifying presence. Truly he had added sheen to every frame he is present in. And yes, neatly providing hand-in-glove support is Aishwarya and in honesty the due credit should be given. The only disappointment is her performance which was "like" artificial, while on the other hand Hritik's perfection clearly left its mark.

Jr. B was completely overshadowed by Hritik. I guess Dhoom 2 was Hritik's payback for Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon, and my my!!

Uday Chopra is good in the edited role. Anything more would have spoilt the feast. His pairing was akin to 48 Hours, Lethal Weapon and Rush Hour.

Bipasha's sole intention seemed to flaunt her figure which she succeeds. And the double-role was a pot-hole in the storyline.

Rimi Sen's character was simply loud and should have been left out (just like Eesha Deol). In fact they should have borrowed the franchise idea from Munnabhai.

Songs take a while to grow on you unlike the Dhoom where it was instant hit. Choreography deserves a special mention, and yes Vaibhavai Merchant proved she is second to none.

Action sequences are well done. Noteworthy are suspenseful interplay between Hritik and Aishwarya & Hritik and Jr. B. Some good writing there indeed and remind you of Tarantino in Kill Bill.

Indeed Dhoom had a great potential to churn it into a successful franchise sadly the politics it has run into mars the chances. Needless to say, if it were to go forward Dhoom II has definitely set the bar quite high.

Piku (2015)
10/10
A soulful, slice-of-life dramedy which I didn't want to end
24 November 2023
Piku is one gem of a movie - a film that is as realistic as it is charming, as beautiful as it is brilliantly humorous. Soojit Sircar's able directorial efforts on Juhi Chaturvedi's excellent script turn it into an ineffable film experience. With its quirky and eccentric characters, the film adopts a persistent sense of everyday realism which makes the overall product consistently engaging, funny, moving and fascinating. Piku is comic and dramatic in equal parts, but more than its substance, it is a true visual treat. What starts as a nice domestic picture concentrating on the routine of its lead players in what is clearly reminiscent of the old Hrishikesh Mukherjee classics, it takes a turn of events to become an eminently watchable and breathtakingly shot road movie. It never drags for one minute, often making you wish it wouldn't end as quickly as it eventually did.

The film presents one of the most authentic and credible father-daughter relationships ever recorded on film. In so doing, it celebrates values of children looking after their aging parents, values which certainly prevail in a country like India and which gradually disappear from the common consciousness of the current youth. The main character Piku's responsibility towards her ailing father, her patience towards his annoying habits and oversmart nature, is captured with terrific detail, and not for a moment does it veer into cliche. Her almost maternal care of him is never portrayed with overdone sentimentality, sweet talk, or much physical interaction. Her love is selfless and unconditional, and it's proven in actions rather than words. In that respect it reminds one of Mrinal Sen's classic Khandhar, where Shabana Azmi took care of her bedridden mother.

The soulful delivery could not have been possible without the acting, and Piku, both the film and the character, reveals Deepika Padukone as an actor who, at her best, has the rare ability to grasp the complex realities of the human condition. Easily irritable, no-nonsense, always under the pressure of her struggle, she is fully in sync with her character, capturing the flawed nature of Piku with tremendous subtlety. Hers is a portrait of true selflessness and strength. At the same time, Amitabh Bachchan offers a poignant study of old age experience. His mastery of the essence and meaning of growing old and of this ultra-annoying yet touchingly endearing man is phenomenal in a performance that is remarkably well-detailed, nuanced and naturalistic. To think that this towering star-actor would ever approach his parts with the sensibility of character actors is a treasure to behold.

Lion (2016)
10/10
Roars like a near mighty lion!
24 November 2023
'Lion' showed a lot of promise. There was potential for a very powerful story, had heard a lot of good things about it (as seen from many positive reviews and a high rating here) and there is a lot of talent involved. A lot of my friends had said how much it touched them, as have many reviewers here, and it seemed like my kind of film.

Fortunately, 'Lion' was a film that had great potential and mostly lived up to it. Cannot say that for many recent viewings, with a few too many wastes of good concepts and potential (along with wastes of talent, that is a bugbear of mine because it feels like somewhat of a slap of the face) so that there was a film that did not waste it was refreshing and restored a bit of faith. It is a very good film, albeit it was very nearly a great film. That it wasn't the great film all the way through than when it started is something of a shame, but there are so many great qualities all the same.

It is an uneven film sure, starting with the negatives. The second half is not as strong as the first half, it is not as compellingly paced and the clarity of storytelling is less good, some of it feeling vague. That is not to say it is unwatchable, it is still touching in spots in a film that is quite the emotional experience.

Rooney Mara also came over to me as the cast's weak link. She didn't look very interested and her character felt like a misplaced and underwritten plot device.

12th Fail (2023)
10/10
Must watch for all ages!
23 November 2023
"12th Fail" is a remarkable film that captures the struggles and triumphs of an individual in a heartfelt manner. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and featuring the talented Vikrant Massey in the lead role, this movie is a true gem that deserves recognition on multiple fronts.

First and foremost, Vikrant Massey's performance in "12th Fail" is nothing short of exceptional. He effortlessly brings depth and authenticity to his character, immersing the audience in the emotional journey grappling with setbacks. Massey's portrayal is nuanced, capturing the vulnerability, frustration, and eventual growth of his character with great finesse. His performance in this film unquestionably deserves accolades, and it would be fitting for him to receive a National Award for his outstanding work.

Director Vidhu Vinod Chopra deserves commendation for his exceptional storytelling skills. He weaves a compelling narrative that strikes a chord with the audience, effectively portraying the pressures and challenges faced due to the system. Chopra's direction is masterful, ensuring that every scene resonates with authenticity and emotional depth. His ability to elicit powerful performances from the cast is praiseworthy and contributes to the film's overall impact.

The casting in "12th Fail" is impeccable. Each actor is perfectly suited to their respective roles, enhancing the believability of the story. The supporting cast delivers stellar performances, further enriching the narrative and creating a cohesive ensemble. The chemistry between the actors feels natural, drawing the viewers into the world of the film and making their emotional journey all the more engaging.

Baby (I) (2015)
10/10
One of the best movie in recent times
23 November 2023
Time, I was so excited about a movie was when I saw Ugly! Talking about Neeraj Pandey, I'm among those very people who didn't find the climax of Special Chabbees exciting. In fact, I was able to guess the finale long before it started. And so for me, the finale was the weakest link in Special Chhabees. For A Wednesday, it was a great thriller from start till end.

Now coming to the Baby! The first half started with bang and I was really looking forward to the movie. However, right about the interval, I was thinking that it wasn't all that great! And that's where I was wrong. With the entry of Taapsee Pannu, started a race against time. And here's where Neeraj Pandey really really blew my mind. That's how a thriller is made. Stupid movies like Race 2 ought to learn from this movie. The second half kept me at the edge of my seat that seldom any Hindi movie does.

Kudos to the Baby team for contributing such a gem to Indian Cinema. Thrillers like A Wednesday, Ugly, and Baby are a rare treat to movie goers like me, who just can't leave their brains at home. The critics can find all the fault they want in this movie, but for me it's one of Neeraj's best.

Akshay did a very good job. He is a versatile actor who should do more sensible movies instead of movies like Once Upon A Time In Mumbai - 2. But I'm all praise for Tapsee Pannu. Unlike every Telugu movie, where the heroine is a Bimbo, Tapsee showed her acting prowess with this movie. Anupam Kher was excellent as always. Not much can be said about Rana Daggubati as his role wasn't meaty enough!

3 Idiots (2009)
10/10
Masterpiece from Rajkumar Hirani
23 November 2023
Film--with a run-time of almost three hours. When a movie is bad or just okay, this can seem like forever, but since "3 Idiots" is a very, very good film I loved its length. And, like most films of the genre, it has its share of the usual singing and dancing so foreign to films from other countries. One thing you should know, however, is that defining the type of film it is isn't really easy. Much of it is a comedy, but it also has many poignant moments (keep the Kleenex nearby), some existential moments where they explore the meaning of life and work and it's also a tender film about friendship. And, as my daughter pointed out when she saw the film, she loved that the men in the movie are not afraid to cry--something you rarely see in western films.

As for the plot, it's very long and involved and I could recount what occurs. But I don't want to spoil a single wonderful moment, so my advice is just sit back and watch--and if you give it a chance, I can almost guarantee you'll have a great time with this poignant and funny film. Wonderful and well worth your time--with a delightful script, wonderful characters and lots of moments that made me smile...and a few that brought me to tears. See this film.

Good movie with great acting by Srideviji
23 November 2023
Films over the last few years with keen interest, with one of the prime reasons being, why not? We have dedicated halls and screens which are always showing the latest the industry has to offer, very often having same day premieres, and I cannot fathom having to close this option off for the lack of language ability. English subtitles is a boon, and my only option to understand what's being said on screen. English is of course the plot element here in this film, written and directed by Gauri Shinde, who has made a film that's strong in heart, and powerful in performance.

I'm talking about Sridevi's comeback to cinema, having retired some 15 years ago to raise her kids. And this leave of absence surely helped her in her protagonist role here, but more on that later. For those unaware, like I was previously, Sridevi is arguably the best actress Indian Cinema has produced over the last few decades, and it is only today that I fully understood why. Her performance as Shashi, the traditional Indian housewife, is impeccable, and the littlest of nuances put into her role, reaped results in the manifold. As a line of dialogue described, her eyes are like coffee drops in a saucer of milk, and that in itself is an understatement.

Charisma is something that you have, or have not, and Sridevi's presence is something that arrests your attention immediately when she comes on screen. Carrying the entire movie, it's unbelievable to think that she's pushing 50 already, as her performance here will probably inspire many actresses of today's generation sit up and take note, to realize that they still have a long way to go to reach a fraction of her level. I'm sold, impressed, and very eager to catch up on her filmography to see what more she had to offer during the 80s and 90s when she was at the peak of her popularity then.

A bollywood grandeur
23 November 2023
This film shines from start to finish, and runs the gamut of emotions. The cinematography, sets, and costumes are brilliant. The sparkling performances of six of India's leading actors alone makes the movie worth seeing, even if some might not feel comfortable with the deep sentimentality displayed by the leading men (women are fine with this; American men sometimes find it unnerving). Hrithik Roshan is pure eye candy for women of all ages, somehow oozing sweetness and innocent sexuality at the same time. The catchy song and dance number he performs with the lovely Kareena Kapoor at their 'prom,' "You Are My Soniya," has gotten regular replays in this household for weeks (even by my 79-year old mother, who will say, "I need a Soniya fix" - it really cheers her up!). The other musical numbers are very enjoyable, too, and never seem out of place or at odds with the flow of the film. Shahrukh Khan is adorable, as always, as the favorite son, and can hold his own in the dance numbers, too. Kajol gets to show her comic side, and was great at it! And knowing that the 'parents,' Amitabh and Jaya are a married couple in 'real life' just makes their interactions in the film that much better. Don't miss this wonderful movie! If you see just one Hindi movie, make it this one!

Good animatied version of KKHH
23 November 2023
It takes guts to make animated version of this legendary movie and I think this movie made justice to original one. I bet you will feel nostalgic,I first saw this in a theater in the late 90s. Revisited it recently. The film is an unofficial remake of On the Waterfront. While this one aint no masterpiece like the original, it has lots of action n thrilling moments. The most iconic one is the train sequence. The final showdown between the hero n the villain is a solid one too. The performance by the lead actor Aamir Khan is the highlight. Rani Mukherjee looked stunning throughout n very nice in the last scene with her black tshirt. Deepak Tijori's sideburns n his jacket is a big lol. The film does have its flaws.

The boxing match looked clearly rigged n not at all an official championship one. One of the fighter is not landing punches or defending himself but jus stayingin in one place, hands behind the rope n suffering punches by the opponent. The house/bldg doesn't have any safety hedge or any grill around. The jackets worn by the bikers are pathetic. Some of the side characters who played the bikers looked uncles n not at all youngsters.

Siddhu, a tearaway and ned, is a boxing champion. His elder brother is the accountant and henchman for a slumlord. The slumlord is a former boxing champion who rules the local community by terrorising people, extorting money from local shopkeepers n hoteliers n sometimes by match fixing. Siddhu convinces a social worker who reminds him of his dead father, into an ambush, preventing the social worker from persuading the local people to sign a police complain against the slumlord. Siddhu assumed that the slumlord's henchmen were only going to have a talk with the social worker to pressure him into not convincing the local people to file a police complain against the slumlord but is shocked when the social worker is killed.

Veer-Zaara (2004)
10/10
Treat to watch Yash Chopra's work! Great acting and storytelling.
23 November 2023
Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara is a visually stunning and emotionally touching picture about star-crossed lovers who meet once and are tied forever. Chopra artistically combines realism with unrestrained emotion and even some overdone sentimentality. On paper, the love story itself, the separation and everything else is quite typical, but Chopra infuses it with a different energy, masterfully emphasising the respect the two leads have for each other, the honour they pay to parents and elders, and their genuine willingness to sacrifice themselves for each other. While it is a cross-border love story between an Indian and a Pakistani, their nationality is not what really prevents them from being together. The lovers connect at the human level. Phenomenally well shot, Veer-Zaara flows smoothly through the stunning views of Indian and Pakistani fields and groves, and colourfully shows the bright sides of each country and their respective people. That the film does not define a specific period of historical time makes it universally relevant.

Good story and chemistry between Dips and Ranbir
23 November 2023
I'm watching this film well after it was released in the cinemas (in fact after seeing both Besharam and Chennai Express) so I know how the film had performed at the box office, and what most people thought of it so my expectations were high!

YJHD does through the typical roller coaster of a Bollywood romance, but where it differs from those that have failed, is that it has the star power of Ranbir and Deepika at the top of their game, alongside lovely music by Pritam and fantastic direction by Ayan Mukherjee.

Ayan is certainly one of the top young directors in the industry, and after Wake Up Sid, shows exactly why he holds his mantle piece. This work will go down as one of his finest, even though I am sure he will make many more films.

This role is bread and butter for someone of Ranbir's stature now. He eases into the role, initially playing the fun going flirty young man, then growing into the serious, yet romantic mature man later. This role is not on the same level as Barfi, there is no comparison, however it's these types of roles that will keep Ranbir competing with the likes of SRK for the romantic king award! Deepika has grown massively this year, and this being the third film (Ram Leela is the 4th) she has hit the industry with a bang in 2013. She looks stunning on screen and plays her role perfectly! Kalki, as annoying as her role, again plays it without any blemishes. Her role reminds you of Zindagi Na Milenge Dobara quite a lot! Aditya seems to be alcoholic of 2013 with this and Aashiqui 2 but does full justice to the role regardless!

Incredible sincere biopic wrestle with your emotions, let it grab you around the waist and smash you through a glass ceiling like no other, let it hold you in its arms and flip you around until your head is spinning. A truly inspirational story of a family, of Geeta Phogat and her sister Babita Kumari, of their father Mahavir Singh Phogat, of the incredible journey, adventure and experience they undertake in order to achieve something spectacular and profound. With breathtaking performances all round, this is one film that will leave you in awe of the incredible things people can achieve in the most challenging of circumstances - an absolutely astonishing piece of film making.

Great movie.

The hero Mr. Ravi Teja has put his all efforts to make the film successful. Great efforts my Mr. Ravi Teja and perfect action which suits the character, There is no scene in which the hero's performance has exceeded the limits or lower the limits. In each and every scene the performance is upto the expectations of the audience.

Coming to the Direction, Mr. Vamsee has made a good job selecting Mr. Ravi Teja as the hero of the movie. And this is one of the film which has been taken forward in the box office due to the direction. It is not at all an easy job to direct a film without even leaving a hint for the audience what is going to happen in the second half.

Perfect timing for fights and dialogues.

The way the director portray the hero in the first half and the second half is fully different for the same story.

Super climax. Ki

Finally the movie was amazing and a good story oriented film.
