The Killer (2023)
So what
Slick but superficial, I was trying to recall the name of this movie and was really struggling as it was totally forgettable. I wasn't too bothered if the main character survived or not.
Fassbender got it spot on if being anonymous was his objective. Fairly predictable hitman movie with the usual mysterious and convoluted protocols to protect individuals identities and dubious reasons for targets being identified.
Fassbender makes use of a large number of fake identities to travel for his work. Not so sure how, in the days of facial recognition, this modus
operandi works, given he always returns to the same home airport.
Detectorists (2014)
An Absolute Delight
Detectorists is such a beautifully crafted and engaging series it is hard to know where to start. The cast play their roles to perfection, each one of them has their idiosyncrasies that make them plausible and endearing characters.
The story lines and locations merge perfectly in to a little TV gem. It is gentle, wistful and wryly amusing. I would quite happily watch the whole lot repeatedly it is that good.
McKenzie Crook and Toby Jones characters friendship is endearing and true to life. It is obvious that they enjoy each others company and fully inhabit the roles they are playing.
My wife and I can't go past a Screwfix without wondering when the Piñata is coming out, if you know you know!
The characters reactions to drinking Sheila's home made Lemonade are worthy of an Oscar on their own.
Being There (1979)
The emperors new clothes retold
One of my all time favourite films, nice to see that IMDB give it a high rating too.
Peter Sellers performance as Chauncey Gardener is just amazing, he conveys the notion of a naive, simple and innocent man perfectly.
That he innocently participates in the creation of his own mystique is brilliant, his simple answers to questions that are then freighted with weighty meaning instead of being taken at face value is just fantastic.
Aided by a fantastic cast and some great settings this film is a delight from beginning to end.
There are too many great scenes to mention but "I like to watch" has to be one of the best lines in cinema.
One by One (1974)
Miserable voyeuristic parade of gruesome race driver deaths
This film is a waste of celluloid and bereft of any artistic merit. Stacey Keach leads the viewer through a gratuitous celebration of the horrific dice with death that Formula 1 motor racing was in the early 1970's, Keach seems to almost enjoy the unfolding misery as he imparts one lamentable cliche after another. The editing is hit and miss too. Very much a product of its time, this film when viewed nearly 50 years after the events is a reminder of how far we have come and how low some people can go. Those responsible for this film should be ashamed of themselves.
After Life (2019)
Laugh, Cry, Live
A beautifully written and acted gem, who would have thought that something about death could be so entertaining and uplifting.
Spoiler Alert:
I caught the final episode of series one last night and absolutely loved it. Celebrating the good in everyone and performing random acts of kindness served to lift Tony's veil of grief and allow the good man underneath to emerge into the light of life.
Grief at the loss of someone vital to our lives is a terrible element of the human condition, showing a way forward was for me cathartic and uplifting, thank you Ricky!
Letters to Juliet (2010)
An insult to the intelligence and a waste of celluloid
I gave this film 1 because 0 was not available. I watched it under protest and with a sense of increasing disbelief. I had to endure this film when I would much rather have watched something vaguely intelligent.
The clunky acting, the absence of chemistry and the plodding, predictable and totally unrealistic story-line represent a total waste of celluloid. I pity those who produced this drivel.
I am astounded at the gushing reviews some people have given this totally risible film. Romantic Comedies tend to stretch credulity but this sorry affair takes such licence to totally new and insulting levels.
I am not normally given to negativity but this film is just atrocious.
