When They See Us (2019)
Shame on you Mr President
Great to see justice was served in the end. Horrifying to think how many similar cases through the years never been solved.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
never given a 1/10 rating before, EVER!
Don't know exactly when i noticed i had to force myself to keep paying attention to the movie (my mind kept wondering off for some reason) but when i realised it was happening i knew it was a really really REALLY bad movie.
In hindsight the abundance of CGI and special effects couldn't compensate for the lack of good storytelling and character development resulting in a soulless, loud spectacle without any substance.
A movie too far for the franchise imo.
Sextuplets (2019)
i really hope his Netflix budget runs out soon
Based on Marlon's miss after miss after miss track record last couple years I'm giving this movie a 2/10 based on the trailer alone. Please stop enabling him Netflix and pull the plug.
Point Blank (2019)
everyone's a critic
Don't expect a masterpiece just a very enjoyably action movie with some good enough acting, a solid 7/10 for me.
Blackhat (2015)
Mann does it Again
Before i review the movie, i want to explain why i give this movie a 10/10.
Actually i think this movie is a 8/10 but i give it a 10/10 to compensate for all those ridiculously low rated reviews.
Review: Story is good enough. Not many surprises, pretty straight forward plot: 6/10
I'm a bit biased when it comes to the visuals, because i'm a huge Michael Mann fan and this is a typical Michael Mann style movie. 9/10
Overall i really enjoyed watching the movie, and even if i wasn't a fan of Mann, i would still have given it a 7/10
White House Down (2013)
Thoroughly entertaining
How do i rate a movie? Very simple, i see what reactions it brings out in me. This movie made me laugh for more than one reason and i went "wow" a couple of times because of the action. It made me laugh because not only were there some really funny moments in it (president standing in Marine 1 wearing his Air Jordans) but also some extremely corny stuff which made me think: did they do this as a parody almost or to sell true over the top patriotic bullshit (little girl waving presidential flag on the Whitehouse lawn).
All and all i really enjoyed this movie and liked it much better than Olympus has fallen. Yes i said it!
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
i loved the movie as much as i love the reviews
I just watched this movie and i can best describe it as follows:
-unexpected -hilarious -original -gore
Now for the reviews:
I don't mind people finding this movie a piece of crap and rating it badly. I don't mind people having no sense of humor or feeling robbed after spending a cinema ticket on a movie they weren't expecting. But what i do mind are people starting to call people that did rate this movie highly as being moronic.
Personally i love a good dose of absurdist humor and parody. After reading some of the negative reviews on here, i am even gladder i do.
Final verdict: More please!!!
Prometheus (2012)
Alien: The beginning
i watched the Prometheus trailer on TV and i liked it. So i decided to go to the cinema today and watch it. i didn't hear, see or read anything about the movie apart from the trailer i saw, meaning i didn't know before i watched it that it was part of the Alien/Predator saga. i think this was a blessing because my expectations weren't sky high like a lot of disappointed reviewers on here. the scenery, atmosphere and special effects were spot on for me. the storyline wasn't anything special, just your run of the mill "humanity was created by an alien race" back story and a crew of scientists trying to find answers to the meaning of it all. i was really enjoying this movie up until the point i recognized a certain alien spaceship architecture from "Alien". i then realized this was actually a prequel to Alien and i got really excited. the movie ended by answering one of the main questions that fans of the alien/predator saga have: where do the aliens come from and what drives them? well, Prometheus answers both questions and it made me leave the movie theater with a feeling of satisfaction.
my final verdict (and some well meant advice to all bitter critics out there): Don't believe the hype, just enjoy the ride!
8/10 for me
Pathfinders: In the Company of Strangers (2011)
History Channel Dramatisations are better than this
I watched Saving Private Ryan the other day. Everyone that has seen it must admit it is epic in every way. So still in the mood for another movie about this moment in history i decided to watch Pathfinder. The movie starts with some paratroopers dropping into France, so the first 30 seconds looked promising. Next the story takes you back a few weeks to events leading up to this drop. You see some London club where a female singer is performing a style of music which hadn't even been invented before the 1960s. This is followed by some dialog between a general and some major about the importance of the mission at hand. The sound and acting of this dialog already made my spider senses tingle. I decided to press pause and surf to IMDb to get some confirmation on what i was sensing. To my disappointment my worries were justified. I continued watching the movie in FFWD x120 and am glad i didn't waste 141 minutes of my time on this crap.
-Acting: amateurs? -Director: was there actually a director? -Production: was there a budget?
Just a shame that such a vital mission in one of history's most important battles got raped like this.
I really hope a real studio picks up on this story and makes a film about it which is worthy.
Skyline (2010)
If i want acting of this caliber i'll watch some FOX series on prime time
That's the sense i got watching this movie. As if they gave the director of The O.C. a multimillion dollar budget and told him to make a Cloverfield-like alien invasion movie. Except for David Zayas the entire cast's performances gave me the feeling i was watching a B movie or a television series pilot with a really big budget. But all of this came from a perspective of expecting a blockbuster. Looking back on it and just taking the movie for what it is, i actually enjoyed myself. I had some good laughs at people getting devoured by these big godzilla-like creatures, the dramatic slowmotion effect when David Zayas' character smashes in a glass door with his elbow and the overall uninspired acting which added a certain parody-esk dimension. For my final verdict:
story: 4/10 acting: 4/10 special effects: 9/10 comedic value: 8/10
For me having a laugh is really important when i watch a movie, so with the comedic value weighing in i come to an average score of: 6/10
For the people that don't really think having a laugh is important to rate a movie, i would come to an average score of: 5/10
Buried (2010)
This movie just got to me
I often let my verdict of a movie depend on what emotions i experience afterwards. Well, this movie has left me stunned, shocked and with a bad feeling in my stomach. This on its own can only mean i've just witnessed a great, intense, captivating piece of art. I never really rated Ryan Reynolds' acting before, but after watching this movie he's on my list of favorite actors. On the movie itself: Just imagine yourself waking up in a wooden box, not knowing where you are and how you got there. Then imagine how you would react. Then imagine getting just enough tools to keep you partly sane and having a feeling of hope. At the same time your hope getting shattered when the reality of the situation kicks in. If it's hard to imagine what you would feel like, just watch this movie. It will not only help you imagine it but will make you feel it.
Highlander: The Source (2007)
"there are worse things then death!"...."apparently"
The title of my review is a part of dialog between Duncan MacLeod and some Obese freak show called The Elder. I thought this was very fitting to the movie because being an actor and having to feature in this movie must have been worse then death. This movie feels more like a Highlander parody then a sincere sequel. There is this one part where some monster on a graveyard sings: "Who wants to live forever".
To all Highlander fans: BEWARE! DO NOT WATCH THIS! To all die hard movie fans: just watch this if you want a good laugh!
Personally i was laughing my behind off the entire movie, especially the part with the Elder. But as this wasn't intended to be released as a comedy i rate it as awful.
Remember Me (2010)
Good acting, great plot. i'll remember this movie
When i started watching this movie i expected nothing more then just another romantic drama. Boy, was i wrong. The main character Tyler i couldn't really grasp until the very last part of the movie. Before that he could've been a serial killer in disguise, a hopeless soul wanting to go down the same path as his brother who committed suicide or just a spoiled rich kid without scruples that was trying to get back at the cop who had beaten him. Only in the last part of the movie you figure out he's just a guy trying to do right by his little sister and the people he loves and coping with the frustration he feels towards his father. The twists and turns of the storyline i thought were really exciting aswel. At one point i even thought that Tyler was a clone of his older brother Michael that committed suicide because of some subtle hints regarding stem cell research. But all of the above was just a brilliant way of putting you off track until the very last minute. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, from the acting to the storyline and the plot. A movie i will surely remember.
The Box (2009)
this movie makes you think, really think
This movie touches on some very profound and important issues. We live in a society where more and more personal needs and desires are more important then those of others. The Box addresses this issue with suspense, mystery and a good dose of science fiction.
If you want a happy ending and not much thinking afterward, skip this movie.
If you want an intelligent movie with good acting, good suspense and something to think about afterward, i can highly recommend it.
PS: i have read some of the more negative reviews on here and the only thing i can say is: don't take it personal, most of us would have pushed the button.
Lost: The End: Part 1 (2010)
A fitting ending to Man's ultimate journey, although a season too soon
First of all i have to say that i have been crying my eyes out during the finale. When it comes to the emotional part of the series, this finale gives great closure. Having said that, i am left with the feeling that it could have been so much more then just a happy ending. During the 6 years Lost has raised so many questions about the meaning of the island, the forces behind it and what the exact purpose of the oceanic survivors are, the Others, etc etc. This final season i feel like all those factors have been turned from vital parts of the storyline (and possible plot) to nothing more then faded memories and incidents. It was as if the writers had a choice to either work up to a solid closure or hold true to the mystery and suspense of the previous seasons but leaving viewers with a lot of unanswered questions. I really feel if they had added another season (or two), the current ending would have been more then just a happy end, but actually a closure which would have done the previous seasons justice.
The Lovely Bones (2009)
good ingredients don't always make a good recipy
A good director, good actors and good cgi don't always make a good movie. Maybe my expectations were a bit off, but had the movie been more about suspense with a thriller element rather then the after-life drama it was, i would have liked it i think. The emotional angle in this movie should have been a tool to feed the suspense surrounding the killer and the father trying to find him and whether or not his other daughter would been the next/last victim. But to my great disappointment that never happened. If i had known the movie would have mostly been about drama and surreal after-life cgi rather then finding a good balance between this and the suspense, i would have stopped watching after 20 minutes.
Midnight Chronicles (2009)
more pilot then feature
First thing i did after watching this movie was go on the internet to see if it actually was the pilot to Midnight the series i'd been watching. Unfortunately this wasn't the case which has left me with a very unsatisfied feeling. You do get a good introduction into the world of Midnight, but when you feel the story is just about to take off the ending credits start playing. I just hope the makers of this movie see the actual potential of the story and decide that they have made a pilot after all and not a film that has to carry its own weight.
The acting actually wasn't too bad and the sceneries combined with the computer generated settings gave the movie an authentic feel.
