Bad Frank (2017)
A dumb chick flick
The main attraction is obviously the idiot being shirtless.
All muscle, no brain. Also, obviously a political statement against guns.
The bad guys had guns, the good guys had a-do, whack-a-do, whack-a-do.
Why didn't the bad guys kill the witnesses when they had a chance? Why did the idiot think a knife was sufficient against the bad guy leader's enforcer? Why did the idiot get stinking drunk, when in reality that would kill his chance of survival, let alone getting revenge/justice. Why did the idiot have no weapon when he met the bad guy leader at the hostage swap? Breaking the neck of his hostage made good suspense, but of course should have instantly gotten him shot. The idiot was dismissed from the Marines not for his temper, but for having no brain.
Chronicle (2012)
Weird, like watching a YouTube video.
For me, herky-jerky first-person camera-work is unwatchable. I recall seeing it before, but I do not understand why any movie would feature it. Maybe for a few minutes. Hand-held cameras have been around for decades, so it is not new technology. Maybe it is fun to watch if the viewer is doing lots of drugs. The ability for practically anyone to film stuff is somewhat new, but I do not understand why that would make it a good tool for a movie. And then there are periodic short skips in the movie. Perhaps it is expressive in some way, like how to be annoying as possible while making a movie. Too weird IMO.
The Nice Guys (2016)
Difficult to Believe
Giving it 6 out of 10 (even though I did not watch the whole thing) because some people might consider this point to be picky, but... Watching dialogue between the two main characters was too difficult knowing that the one had broken the other's arm and that the matter was not prosecuted. Maybe they should have included some justification for letting that slide? Maybe it could have been funny, but the way it is presented seems ridiculous to me. Also, it was difficult to follow. I got the impression the private investigator was crooked but that was not clear to me from the discussion between him and the elderly female client. Also, it seemed heavy on the political correctness. Like a corrupt White Knight, the tough guy goes around breaking other men's faces and arms for their crimes against females. And the wimpish PI answers to his daughter. I suppose the breaking of the PI's arm (without recourse) could appeal more to women/females as well. And that's the way it is, according to me.
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
Milla Jovovich
If you are into beautiful and adorable women (or wish you were) this is your movie. Milla Jovovich is unforgettable. And of course Bruce Willis is out to save the world. If you have not seen it, stop reading and see it. Lots of science fiction, adventure, and romance (between the audience and Milla Jovovich). Not perfect, but lots of great scenes you would expect in a well produced movie. Another great performance from Gary Oldman. The director uses him in Leon, The Professional, another of his movies were the leading lady shines so brightly. Perhaps it is too well polished, but it is worth watching two or three times at least.
The Dead Zone (1983)
Political commentary?
I liked the movie. It is a fun theme. Of course Christopher Walken is a great actor. But it appears to be a poke at Ronald Reagan, against his reelection. The current election cycle, Hillary Clinton versus Donald Trump, has illustrated like never before how much bias there is in the one-way media. I would not fault movie makers for that, they have every right to express their political opinions in movies. Besides, obviously the alleged attempt failed miserably. And speaking of telling the future... Regardless of who is elected, I believe our civilization will collapse in about four or five decades. Donald Trump will buy some time. Hillary Clinton will accelerate our demise. The destruction of marriage has sealed our fate. We are on the slippery slope. Tomorrow's kids will be EXTREMELY intelligent. We are in for some very exciting times with an extremely intelligent uncivilized populace. I would not expect a revolution. Chaos will cause our fall. The rest of the world had better hope our nukes have been disabled before that time.
Interstellar (2014)
Science fiction with a massive dose of political/commercial correctness
The amount of political/commercial correctness we must endure with our science fiction is increasing with time. I don't know how it can get any worse. If they were going to have someone's daughter save the world, couldn't it have at least been Bruce Willis's daughter? There's a line in the movie about the people being unwilling to pay for NASA missions. That's so true today in the real world, and it's so very sad. Besides the massive load of political correctness, the story is nonsense. But of course that doesn't matter to the current masses, his daughter saves the world! Try counting the number of times her father cries during the movie...
Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)
Bloody and a little cussy, but outrageous fun
I got wind of this movie from searching comedies IMDb top 1000 from 1995 onward. Something about the reviews impressed me more than usual. So glad I took a look. Very funny. I noticed some comments referring to the trailers. I hope the trailers didn't spoil the first scene were Dale is trying to make it with the college girl. That would be a shame. That's about the funniest movie scene I've ever seen. Better than anything from Woody Allen's early days. All you need to know is what's going on and a still picture from the perspective/view of the college girl. That should be in a movie poster, but not in a trailer. I don't think what I've said is a spoiler because it just tells you that it's very funny. Now that you know, maybe you won't die laughing and miss the rest of the movie. Otherwise... I enjoyed the romance. Did not enjoy the gore, but I suppose most people would consider it faky. Didn't like the foul language, but it wasn't pervasive. Like the synopsis says, this movie is a great twist on the worn out horror movie so often featuring inbred, chainsaw wielding hillbillies. Maybe it would have been more popular if they had named it something like "College Kids Gone Wild" instead of featuring the downtrodden hillbillies. Whether or not the fault was marketing, it's a downright shame this here movie was overlooked.
In case it helps, other comedies I enjoy... Just Like Heaven (2005), Blazing Saddles (1974), Mars Attacks! (1996), Anchorman (2004) up until near the end, Caddyshack (1980), Dumb & Dumber (1994), Idiocracy (2006), Intolerable Cruelty (2003), Men in Black (1997). Hopefully I'm not missing many contemporary gems like the current movie.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Slobbery
A movie about a rug? Bowling buddies? Why not make a movie about a lost toothbrush and friends in a chat room? The fat slob is supposed to be entertaining. I have nothing against Jeff Bridges, I vaguely recall him from my young adulthood and I liked him in K-PAX. As the main character in this movie, his part was a slob. I don't know why this movie is rated highly. You would have to be a really great actor with lots of help from the creative departments to overcome the slobbery character. He didn't do it for me. Maybe it's the nostalgia that most people like. An actor must be enjoyable to watch, regardless of the character. This just wasn't. If you're a big fan of Jeff Bridges and you must see this movie, I hope you find it much more entertaining than I did.
Dumb and Dumber To (2014)
Anybody who compares it to the first is dumber than dumber
If I rated it based on the first movie, it would be a 1 or 2. But that wouldn't be fair. I had no expectations for this sequel being good as the first movie because the first movie is one of my favorite movies of all time. It was a stroke of genius. Definitely my kind of movie. In no way did I expect this movie to live up to it, or to be close. And I wasn't disappointed. It's amusing but it's not entertaining. Of course you'll want to see it if you are a great fan of the first movie, no matter what anybody says about it. If you loved the first movie, you shouldn't even be reading reviews to figure out whether or not to watch this version. Just watch it, you will undoubtedly get something out of it.
The Fly (1986)
As if David Lynch were reincarnated
The Fly (1986) reminds me of the little I could stomach of Eraserhead (1977). But instead of just grossing out the audience, David Cronenberg made it fascinating and moving. I don't understand why there is no such category as "Tragedy". That is the primary description of The Fly. Maybe IMDb thinks "tragedy" would be a spoiler? That's why I checked the spoiler checkbox. Watching the whole movie is a bit difficult for me (not for lack of trying), but I just listened to the entire audiotrack. Besides the makeup, it has good special sound effects. Would like to have seen it win more awards. Jeff Goldblum should IMO have been nominated for Oscar or Academy stuff. I love the story in spite of the hard-core political correctness in the relationships. We always get that with good science fiction. This one is great.
Case 39 (2009)
Intelligent anti social-liberal fable
It's not a great movie, but the story does appear to be novel. It is not the same story as in any other movie I have heard mentioned. It's showing on the major Internet streaming service. I guessed what was coming, so I used the Silverlight shortcut keys to fast-forward to the anticipated parts. I thought some of it was hilarious. This movie isn't a comedy, but maybe the actors and/or the director wanted to make it so on a peripheral level. If you are an intelligent anti social-liberal with a sense of humor, hopefully you will be as amused as I was. It's a fable that needed to be told IMO. I watch a lot of movies, but I'm not much of a film critic. I guess the acting was okay. The leading lady reminds me of some British comedic actress, but I don't recall her name. The girl did okay.
Losin' It (1982)
Crude but amusing.
Losin' It is a crude but amusing story about some frustrated high school boys who want very much to loose their virginity. So they take a car ride to Tijuana and get into some trouble while "Losin' It". Losin' It is not a typical hollywood movie. I think it is slightly better than its rating on IMDB, but maybe not worth paying for. The title is a play on words, BTW.
