The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Leave the franchise alone, no Resurrection needed. Ever.
I was very cautious with the hype when the trailer dropped and set the bar and expectations for this movie low. Yet it still was a disappointment.
This is just simply not a good movie. If it didn't have the Matrix franchise attached to it, it would've been a straight-to-DVD sci-fi. I simply couldn't get the Matrix atmosphere from any of the scene or visuals. There was absolutely nothing original or unique about the story or any of the scenes.
The original Matrix also had a tinted green world visual, at least they could've tried it here too, but they didn't. Just felt so disconnected from the entire Matrix universe. Couldn't care about any of the characters. No wonder that the original cast was not interested in this.
Bad pacing, and unnecessarily long.
If you have HBO Max, watch it, don't pay for it at the movies, not worth the ticket price
I hope that this was the last installment of the Matrix franchise, they managed to ruin it even worse after the second and third installment in the early 2000's.
1917 (2019)
Absolutely outstanding!
This is one of those very rare occasions when after the movie is finished, I just sat in the theater and repeating "wooow!" over and over again. I went to see it twice so far. Just amazing!
This movie is flawless. I don't give out 10 out of 10 stars but this piece of art deserves it. Just simply fantastic! Every second on screen deserves full attention, you can't take a break from it and you don't want to.
Probably the greatest film shooting and editing masterpieces ever made, even better than Birdman in my opinion, Roger Deakins get ready for that Oscar statue! Mr. Newman's music puts you in the mood with the story, fantastic script and acting from every major character and extras. Do yourself a favor: just go and see it on the big screen. You won't regret it!
A Christmas Carol (2019)
My favorite version of this classic!
I must say that this adaptation of Charles Dickens' story that is clearly meant for mature audience is my favorite of them all. High quality production with excellent writing and acting. The dark and grey theme of the 1800's London perfectly sets the atmosphere for the story of Mr. Scrooge.
I binged through all three episodes in one night, because despite knowing the story, I just couldn't stop watching it. I'm giving it a solid 8 out of 10 and I recommend it if you're looking to watch something more than just your ordinary Christmas Carol movie.
A Plague Tale: Innocence (2019)
2019 game of the year for me
This has to be one of the best games I've every played. I've only played around 3 hours so far, but it is just simply phenomenal how well the game can suck you into the story and you genuinely care for the girl and the boy. Actually I was more worried that the boy got hurt every time my character had to make a decision.
Wonderful atmosphere, the music, dialogues are absolutely spot on to suck you into the world and feel the pain and struggle the characters are going through as they venture across the storyline.
I highly recommend it to anyone really.
Gisaengchung (2019)
A Korean gem!
A very pleasant surprise of how to combine something mysterious, and something with great horror elements but keeping it light with perfect black humor and not to give away too much at any point. The movie has this soft tension build up all throughout story progression and never really settles down on one tone.
Shortly after the start you kind of get the idea where things go, but you have no clue what is going to happen after that and how the protagonists are going to deal with the difficulties they are facing. The script was very cleverly written, makes you face a decision who you are rooting for. I could sympathize with either the "good guys" or the "bad guys" at any given point during the movie.
This movie should be a great example to Hollywood how to write and direct an original title, this is a Korean gem that will go down as one of the best in its genre and category.
Castle Rock (2018)
One of my favorite shows of all time!
I wasn't familiar with Mr King's Castle Rock work prior watching the show. I didn't know what to expect really, but knowing his previous stories and reading dozens of his books, I hoped for something great, unusual and surprising. And oh boy, was I right!
Season 1 captures you from the first episode and you want to watch the second episode right away. This goes on until the end of the season that left me very satisfied with the ending. Absolutely fantastic work from all the artists involved.
Season 2 starts out just as good as the first one, building up on the happenings from season 1. I'm going to be honest. I waited until the full season is out, because I really couldn't wait a week between episodes that I did during season 1, I just had to know what happens next, right away.
There was no shortage of great story development. Gotta tell that they really glued me to the couch and pretty much every minute on the screen was full of emotions, questions. The main protagonists toying with your feelings, sometimes you hate them, sometimes you love them. Just like season 1, the second season left me with very satisfying ending, it was perfect!
I really hope that they renew the show for season 3! It is one of my favorite shows from the past 2 years!
The Witcher (2019)
Fell short for me
First of all, let's get something out of the way. I've never seen Game of Thrones so I am not comparing The Witcher to that show.
This show just didn't capture me. I wanted to like it so bad, Mr Cavill is one of my favorite actors, but unfortunately this show will not go down as a highlight of his career. I appreciate his enthusiasm for the character and the video game, he brought Geralt to the screen in a very good an authentic way. But it just didn't work for me. Nevertheless, he is the only positive thing that I can think of about this show.
I don't know what's the production budget, but so many times the entire thing felt like a B-category, cheap production. Poorly written dialogues, not so great acting from the rest of the cast (I didn't care for any of the characters) and casting choices. The CGI was okay overall, the sword fight scenes were great. The editing of the plot progress was confusing sometimes, made me wonder what the heck is going on, unfortunately not in a good way.
I'm not sure if I give the second season a chance after the first one.
Knives Out (2019)
A modern day Poirot
Let the mystery begin! When you sit down you kinda know what to expect if you watched the trailer, but at the same time you have no idea what's going to happen next. Whenever a question is answered in the story, another one right away arise.
The story gives you the classic "this is my main suspect" phenomena to pick your guilty party when you conduct your own "investigation" during the dialogues, but obviously you can't be sure if you're right or wrong. Cleverly giving out clues during the story progression makes you realize that you may be wrong all along.
I can't remember a period during the movie when I didn't have to pay attention. Everything the characters say and do on screen, adds up to the greater picture.
Great cast and performance from all the actors involved. Excellent entertainment for 2 hours. Well written, great directing along with great music. If you want something different, I highly recommend to check this one out.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
One the best in 2019
What a fantastic movie! A wonderful story, very well written. Perfect art directing with excellent acting paired with great humor.
Mr Waititi proved again to be one the greatest writer and director talent of his generation. Perfect casting and I applause to the young actors who brought the story to life. This movie is so much more than just a satire.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Cinematic masterpiece
A24 has been my favorite production studio for a while now for their original ideas and liberty that they give to the production crew, including the directors and writers.
This movie is no exception. From the very beginning you feel sympathy for the protagonists as they develop and change throughout the movie. Excellent writing.
The acting is Oscar worthy both from Dafoe and Pattinson. Absolutely top notch! There are times when you can't decide which one of the characters they played you care for or hate, the screenplay and the on screen happenings kept me on the edge of my seat.
You can feel something sinister pulling the strings, but you can't figure out what it is. Is it an evil spirit? Is it their minds that are playing games with them? Is it solitude? The combination all of those? Who is the bad guy? Who is the good guy? Questions like these you find yourself asking during the movie.
The editing and camerawork are fantastic also. During shots you can almost feel that you're there, the black and white experience adds to the mood that screams hopelessness and desperation.
I will surely watch this movie again.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
I'm glad it's over
I sat down with high expectations, because a movie of this caliber deserves that. Even after the previous 2 catastrophes.
Disney. Can you please for the love of God, give a rest to featured Star Wars movies and maybe just focus on TV shows around the Star Wars universe? This was an absolute embarrassment. I'm not sure what the intention was with the latest installment to be honest. Pleasing old fans? Answering unanswered questions from the previous 2 movies and filling in plot holes? Both failed.
Terrible, lazy writing, unoriginal. Shame on the writing staff.
I still couldn't connect or care for any of the characters. They had 3 movies to do that, but failed. So many unnecessary characters were brought back for no reason other than the writing staff had simply no idea what to do with the plot. PLEASE! LEAVE THE OLD TRILOGY ALONE! Leave those characters alone once and for all!
Return of Darth Sidious? How? Why? Oh yeah, you don't get an answer. Darth Sidious is one of the strongest, if not the strongest Sith Lords of all time, yet here is some random girl (who is his granddaughter btw for the "wooow" effect that also fails), who had minimal training and defeats him and slicing through the Emperor's Royal Guard with his now best friend Kylo Ren, like hot knife through butter?! Are you kidding me?!
Also the kiss. WHY?!
Oh, by the way, some of the characters were just simply killed off if there was no need for them or if they writing stuff clearly didn't know what to do with them.
Jedi can also bring back others to life? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!!
Again. Very unoriginal, lazy writing. Shame on you Disney and the production staff!
Captain Marvel (2019)
Boring, dull
No creativity, boring story, generic fight scenes, very forgettable.
Marvel set a standard for high quality superhero movies in the past years, this one seems like a project where they tried too hard and failed, or they didn't try at all and failed. I really can't tell.
Larson's acting was...well, I'm not going to say bad, bud very mediocre, Samuel L Jackson was good as usual, his character was the highlight for me in the story and there was the "rest of the cast". Nothing memorable.
Not worth to spend the money at the movies, just wait for the Blu-ray or the On Demand release from whatever service provider you have.
