The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Satisfying Conclusion!
If you've read my review of the FOTR, you'll probably remember that I don't praise the film as much as everyone else, however gave it 8 out of 10. The Two Towers was, in my opinion, much better.
Last night i saw Return of the King. I really enjoyed it! I now find it hard to rate the films individually, as they need to be watched together as one big film to be truly appreciated. ROTK had some amazing battle sequences, and the part with the spider really had me on the edge of my seat! There were many things I enjoyed in the film, much more than in FOTR, and still more than TT. There didn't seem to be a 'boring' moment in the film, and it was entertaining throughout.
However, its not perfect, there were a few things i didn't really like about the film, such as whenever there was a battle or something bad happening it was really dark, and when the 'good guys' stepped onto the scene the sun rose from behind them, and the sun behind the eagles at the end felt a bit OTT. I also felt that the film could have ended a few times. There were actually twice where it faded out, and i thought 'that was a hell of an ending!', and people in the cinema were getting ready to leave, satisfied, then it faded back in for another 10 minutes! I haven't read the books, and appreciate that this sticks to the story of the book completely, in which case i cannot criticize the film for doing this, as it is what it set out to do!
Overall, a damn good film despite some VERY minor flaws! 9 out of 10 (overall, treating the trilogy as one film - 10 out of 10!)
Equilibrium (2002)
Better than expected!
I've just got back from the cinema, after seeing Equilibrium.
My first thoughts on reading about it was that it was just another 'matrix-type' movie that has taken over Hollywood. What i found was much more different, it being a much better film than first appeared. The story seems corny and weak from reading the plot summary, but when it is in the film, it is executed very well. One thing that struck me was the outstanding score, by composer Klaus Badelt. It fitted the film perfectly, and some of it was very catchy, echoing Harry-Gregson Williams, and even the mighty Hans Zimmer himself.
The fight scenes were what really stood out in the film. again, i expected to see 'Matrix-type' fights, but found that it was completely different. The fights are very well coreographed, and work very well in the context of the film, creating the perfect atmosphere for the film: we are impressed by the stylised action, but at the same time, when viewed through the eyes of the characters in the film, we are shocked by it, and it creates a motive throughout the film.
Overall, a good film, better than recent 'matrix-type' action films ive seen, namely ROMEO MUST DIE and EXIT WOUNDS. Worth a look, and try and see it at the cinema too, looks great in 2.35:1 :)
Fear Effect (2000)
Cool game! And its 2.35:1 all the way through!
I played though this game a few years back, just after it came out, so all this is from memory...
I remember it had a canny cool plot for a game - its wasnt exactly MGS or anything, but canny good, a kinda 'film' plot. The graphics of the game were VERY good for the PSOne and the backgrounds were very well, the only bad thing was, every few seconds the whole thing froze up then repeated itself, lol.
I LOVED the way that the game was in WIDESCREEN, ratio 2.35:1 though, that was very cool, because of course, theres no better format than widescreen!
Anyway, overall a good game, oh one last thing - from everyone elses comments on this page, everyone seemed to think that the game was explicit in some ways, i know it was kinda sexual, but there wasnt any bad language or much voilence from what i remember. well there was a bit in a cut scene that involve a helecopter pilot being shot in the face... urgh, i geddit know!
anyway good game, **** outta *****
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Not bad, but its not brill...
OK, i never read any of the books, but have seen the original movie of it so im not a stranger ot the world of LOTR.
Peter Jackson did a great job of creating the atmosphere. After the film had finished i found it hard to think of anything else but the beautiful landscapes and huge buildings that he had shown me, which is a VERY good thing.
The WORST thing about this film is that fact that it is highly overrated!!! i mean, come on!!! number 4 in the top 250! Jesus! Whats so good about it? when compared to films i think of as brilliant, such as Traffic, Silence of the Lambs, Pulp Fiction, and even Shrek - its not all that good. there was not enough emotion brought out in the film, and all the characters were hard to feel for. I had no emotion at all for them, mostly due to the fact that the film concentrated more on the loactions and action scenes, which ARE amazing.
OK - a question for Mr Jackson - whats with all the close-ups of Gandalf's face?! for the first half an hour of the film, all we see of him is his face! every time he talks, the camera is on his face, with it filling the screen, or if its not, it will start with a long shot then slowly zoom in until we have his nose on the bottom of the frame and his eyebrows on the top! what meaning is this supposed to create?! please get back to me if anyone knows k?
anyway, there are many good things about the film, and overall i gave it 7 out of 10 which aint bad. its a good film, but seriousley highly overrated!
Living in Oblivion (1995)
Wow, this movie is great!!!
First of all, this film is VERY VERY funny, but i think it will help if you have had some experience in film-making. That will help you to understand Buschemi's frustration throughout the film.
This film is about people making a film where everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. Everything from sound booms dropping into frame, to actors breaking into fights with the directors! One of the most memorable lines in the film is that when a dwarf actor is cast for a dream sequence, but realizes that the only reason that the director cast a dwarf is so that people will know its only a dream, which the dwarf replies to in a very funny way.
Overall very very funny, but i suggest you may only like it if you have had some film-making experience.
****1/2 out of *****
Silent Hill 2 (2001)
Not as scary, but twice as good!
i thought that the first silent hill game was really good, even though its story was really complicated! That game was totally scary! i decided to buy SH2 at christmas. having played through the game, all i can sayis that it is much much better than the first game! the story is miles better (more like a catastrophic love story than a horror)the graphics are hellish (PS2 though, the graphics on SH1 were great for the PSOne)but the one thing that it lacked was that feeling of fear that was present throughout the first one. well, the feeling was there but it wasn't as scary as in the other game. the hell world was no-where near as scary, where, instead of having rusty blood splattered walls like the first one, the walls were covered in white sheets(!?). Mind you, in the hell hotel at the end, there was a horrible feeling that was given off, more creepy than anything in the first game, but this only lasted a short time.
overall, its one of my fave games and if you liked the first game, you won't be dissapointed!!!
Silent Hill (1999)
Woah!
This is the scariest computer game ever made! it gives off a fear that no game has ever done before. i love the resident evil series, but thats about as scary as Toy Story compared to Silent Hill! Aaaaarrrrrrgh! the game makes you so scared if you play it alone in the dark with the lights out, that you just have to switch to the map screen to calm down!
if you want a scary game to play on, this is it!
