Festival di Sanremo (1951– )

Great show, no doubt about it

The Italian entry at the Eurovision Song Contest is usually sung by the winner of "Festival della Canzone Italiana" (Italian song Contest) also know as "Festival di Sanremo" (Sanremo's Festival). This contest is considered to be the "father" of the E.S.C. and in the past has had among its entrants some Italian Music important names, well known all over Europe, such as Umberto Tozzi (1987, 1991), Laura Pausini (1993-94), Eros Ramazzotti (1984-86) and Zucchero (1982-83, 1984-85). The final (broadcast to many European countries) is generally watched by about 20 million people in Italy.

Italy has won Eurovision twice thanks to Gigliola Cinquetti who sang "Non ho l'età " (1964) and Toto Cutugno who sang "Insieme 1992" (Together 1992) - in 1990. For the past two years Italy hasn't entered Eurovision and so far there isn't any news about the 1996 Competition. Actually, the E.S.C. is not well known in Italy, and RAI - the Public Television Broadcasting Corporation- usually only broadcasts it late in the evening.

The 46th Festival della Canzone Italiana will take place in Sanremo (Riviera Ligure) from the 20th to 24th February and will be broadcast live on RAIUNO (EUTELSAT "HOT BIRD 1" EST - 11.366 V) every day at about 20.30 CET (after the news). Pippo Baudo will be the presenter, together with Valeria Mazza and Sabrina Ferilli. The songs will be performed live accompanied by a full orchestra, each entrant with a nominated conductor. Foreign guests will be Tina Turner, Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Take That, East 17, Bon Jovi, Blur, Enya, Cher, Pat Metheny, Simply Red and Bruce Springsteen.

Big Wednesday (1978)

Good surf movie, but there AREN'T surf songs!!!

Big Wednesday is really a good and enjoyable movie, because it's a surf movie, but it's also more than a surf movie. It tells about friendship in a very nostalgic and romantic way, which I liked a lot, but Milius made a huge mistake not including surf songs in this movie, and I'm not talking about The Beach Boys, they're not surf, I'm talking about Surfaris, Ventures, Tornadoes, etc. The greatest part of the movie is the sanitary inspection, with all the attempts to avoid Vietnam.

I'm in love with Antonia Liskova!

This movie is not a good one, but Antonia Liskova (who starred the TV show "Via Zanardi 33") makes it at least worth a watch. She has a very nice face and a body that you can only dream at night. And that smile... Believe me, take this movie, and you will thank me for the rest of your life.

Very enjoyable TV show

Especially I really loved the episode where he tries to became math professor and he goes to the drugstore to buy the candies, just because he had to solve a problem about the price and weight of candies. "How many candies do you want?" "No, you have to tell me how many!"

Best Italian TV show ever

"I ragazzi della terza C" was an Italian underrated TV show, that was quite popular in the mid 80's, but then was classified as "TV show for kids".

Nothing could be more wrong. IRDTC had a lot of philosophical, human and artistic messages. The stories of Bruno Sacchi, Chicco, Sharon, etc. represented the interior teenage angst like no other show did before.

The strength of this show was talking about some serious matters without being boring: you can find suicide, drugs, questions about the existence of man and life, ethical problems: summing up, these guys faced all life troubles like we all do everyday, but with the artistic and often experimental touch of director Claudio Risi, this show achieves an high poetic level.

This shows demonstrates that also the average Joe tv watcher could understand and enjoy characters, dialogues, stories which are on an unbelievable high cultural level.

I would like also to mention two technical aspects: the great acting level, the cast was actually full of talented young actors and the incredible rhythm (speed) of the scenes (difficult to follow sometimes).

Eventually I would like to suggest to everybody this masterpiece of Italian fiction.

Fireworks (1997)

Totally boring

If Kitano wanted to bore to death the audience, well he succeeded! This movie lasts about 1 hour and 40 min but it seems 8 hours... and nothing happens. No one even speaks (maybe in Japan they have already discovered telephaty...). Another low point is the acting. We have 2 or 3 good actors, the others are totally amateur-actors, in certain scene is really embarassing to view these poor japanese guys who doesn't know where they have to watch... Also: the story (the violent cop who have a tender side) is old, I have seen probably ten movies with this plot: more originality please! Final note: watching this movie you think that in Japan, mafia people (Jacuza) is totally dumb, there are at least 5 scenes where they seem a bunch of retarded people.

Dead Man (1995)

This movie is boring

I don't know how a mental healthy person can say that this is a masterpiece. The only good thing is Neil Young's soundtrack, really suggestive. But the movie!!! First, there's absolutely no plot. Second, most dialogues are unintellegible. Third, it doesn't happen anything. I think I looked at my watch 30 times during this movie. I don't know... poetry? I call it self conceit. Philosophy? Yeah like the sentences you find in chocolates. Stay away from this movie or you'll get bored to death!!! Ending question: William Blake (Johnny Depp) is an accounter who can't use weapons. After 3 or 4 shoots he becomes the best shooter in the West. Am I the only who have noticed it?

Jawbreaker (1999)

Rose McGowan is simply beautiful, but the rest...

Kinky in all of her attitudes, Rose rescues this movie from mediocrity. Yes, there are some good "video-clip" scenes, and when the director decides to turn the movie a little more dark (see Marilyn Manson) is quite enjoyable, but the story is very poor and some dialogues are a little bit disregarded. I have to repeat: you have to see this movie for Rose McGowan, you will love this nasty nasty teen... Unforgettable the ice-cream-with-jock scene!!!

After Hours (I) (1985)

The worse Scorsese movie

I'm very disappointed because I usually love Scorsese Movies, but this one is awful. Typical 80's comedy with worthless dialogues and no true story. Many scenes don't really make any sense. You don't understand some characters behaviours... Example: when Paul is hunted by angry people who believe he is a burglar, he hide himself in a private flat, which is in a nightclub (????), helped by the woman who live in this flat. She wants to help him, but when people ask her: "we want to check if the burglar is in your flat!" she doesn't answer: "What do you want? It's private property! Go to hell!" NO!!! She change Paul into a statue and then says to the angry people: "OK come in and check!" And obviously they don't find Paul beacause he is a statue now!!! (the plaster became hard in ten seconds...) Wow, what a great gag! My 5 years old sister would have had probably the very same idea!!! And the movie is all like that: insipid and senseless like all 80's american movies. The only good thing is the song in the punk party: "Pay to cum" by the Bad Brains (actually a cover, but still a great song)
