A Very Unlucky Leprechaun (1998)
Not the worst
Not the worst direct-to-video leprechaun themed movie I've tried to watch....
But having seen quite a handful of the "Leprechaun" horror films (featuring Warwick Davis as the leprechaun as well), I kept expecting the titular Leprechaun to start killing people, perhaps that contributed to my enjoyment. Perhaps it was also more believable that he would start killing people as I could not understand his character's motivation otherwise... he wanted to return to the magic leprechaun place that is never really explained, but in order to do that... he needs to be caught? But he also has to play hard-to-get otherwise it doesn't count? And he wants to give away his gold...? But why? And how'd he get the gold in the first place? All in all, very lacking in the leprechaun world building.
However, I must give credit where credit is due, it is an uncommon bravery that gives one the courage to ret-con 70% of the film 5 minutes from the end. I wish they would of explained her powers of oneiromancy more clearly though.
4.4/10.
Diagnosis Murder: Trapped in Paradise (1999)
A glimpse of Steve's perspective
This episode- told from the persepctive of Steve, rather than Mark Sloan as is typical- gives an important insight into Steve's relationship with his father. Throughout the episode, Steve is trying to figure out who is murdering some people, with little luck. Then at the end, we see Mark show up and suddenly solve the case through some convoluted means that don't really make sense, at least to me, and I suspect also to Steve. But his deduction is correct, since the woman confesses. I think this is how Steve feels throughout the whole series, always a step behind his father, always in his shadow. He feels inadequate because his father who isn't even a police officer is a better homicide detective than him. This I think explains why every line he speaks sounds so apathetic. This also explains why he develops feelings for the reporter in this episode: she is also bumbling around trying to figure things out but somehow worse at it than Steve, so Steve feels competent and respectable around her. And interesting look into his psyche. 9/10, but -2 because of Barry Van Dyke's acting.
