I liked this until the last episode. I loved the music, especially the last one in episode two. However, the last episode (^) is distasteful. I will watch season two to find out what happens to Quinn.

Atmospheric

I loved this movie. I t was very atmospheric of the 1940s and could have been made shortly thereafter. The music added to the atmosphere. The story kept my engrossed throughout the movie, and Judi Dench was her usual amazing self. I h ighly recommend it.
Boring
28 July 2019
I was very disappointed in the movie. It got such great reviews, so I chose to see this over other good sounding films. I guess there's some truth toit, but many things that happen do not seem believable. It's all talking and not very good acting. Much of the dialogue is difficult to understand, and it doesn't need a big screen. Wait until it comes out on DVD.

Bratty Kids

What a bore. This film got rave reviews, so I finally got the DVD out of the library. Most of what I watched was about screaming, bratty kids living in a dilapidated Florida motel. Now I know this is supposed to be a social commentary about poverty and raising children in it, but most of the characters are unlikeable, and the children are uncontrollable. I just watched half of it.

There Will Be Boredom

I recall a novel by, I believe, Evelyn Waugh, in which an amateurish church group decides to make a film about the life of John Wesley. They haven't the slightest idea of what makes an interesting film, as, for example, one of the scenes in which Wesley is seen, sitting at his desk composing a pamphlet for four minutes.
Of course, that's the joke, these people are amateurs, and will for all their good intentions, turn out a piece of boring junk. That was my reaction here - one scene after an other, dull and too long. But then, I remember, these people aren't amateurs, they are supposedly some of the most skilled professionals in the business, who make a lot of money entertaining us.
What on earth could they have been thinking when they turned out this tedious turkey?

Warning: Spoilers
If this is not the worst film I have ever seen, it is close to it.
Basically, it is about a single father, a newspaper columnist who decides to alter his life to spend more time with his three unpleasant, demanding daughters (although they were evidently not intended to be seen that way). The problem is that he does this as the result of a stay with his family. I was going to use the term "family from hell", but one commentator apparently beat me to it. All great minds think alike.
There is a subplot about his attraction to his brother's girlfriend, but I can't say I found myself very involved in it.
I have never seen such a bunch of frantic, hyperactive people as this family in my life; I grew fatigued halfway through the film just watching them. If I were the protagonist, I would be looking for a nice, quiet neighbourhood on Madagascar or the Falkland Islands just to get away from them and their constant whooping it up.

Ho-hum, more deep meanings
17 May 2008
This film seems promising enough at the outset. Plenty of Scandinavian gloom, obviously, but very promising symbolism, surrealism and "deep meanings" all over the place.
The trouble is that, by the time the film is half over, you have lost track of the symbols and the plot. And, as far as the meanings are concerned, you simply don't care any more. One gets the idea that the writer felt that his world view is of extreme importance, and worth telling everyone about. I, however, felt as if I had been stopped in the street by an Ancient Mariner, and forced to listen to an endless story in which I had less and less interest as the plot progressed. At least light Hollywood comedies make few demands on your intellect, rather than engaging it and then letting it down.
