12 Years a Slave (2013)
Quesadillas
Such an important story to be told in such a way that allows the viewer to understand the trap of slavery Solomon was stuck in. The characters are represented with so much emotion, and the pain of the slaves are able to come through in many scenes. The acting in this film is difficult to watch but executed well. Along with the acting, the costumes and make-up is believable. This film shows diverse personalities among the slave owners and slaves, and the different perspectives that they might have had at the time.
One of the better parts of this film is the camera shots and angles. Shots of beauty in nature are thrown in there, between difficult scenes. These kind of shots give a breather for the viewer after some difficult scenes. It is difficult to have a film that depicts such a large time period but this film does a good job at that although, when jumps in the timeline occur, it is difficult to tell that they did.
Overall, a very educational and important story filmed in a difficult way. Good film.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013)
Hash Brown Casserole
Long Walk to Freedom displays a wide range of Mandela's life, from when he became a man to when he was old and released from prison. This film does a good job at balancing the story of Mandela's family life, his political life, and his prison life. Idris Elba does a phenomenal job at playing Mandela, as a viewer the emotions and the words he spoke were strong and felt. Even when Mandela was old, the acting was still on point. The other characters in this film were realistic and fit into the roles very well. The editing I found to be quite choppy, as the jumps in the timeline left me confused and uninformed. Overall a good film and recommend if you want to learn more about Nelson Mandela's journey and the effects he had on South Africa.
Desert One (2019)
BigMac without Pickles
Desert One covers the 1980 hostage situation between Iran and United States. Desert one does a good job at showing both perspectives of the situation from start to finish, as in before the 52 Americans were taken hostage to the release of the hostages. The film presents the main elements of the situation through, old television news footage of both Iran and American perspectives, many people who were involved in the situation for example; Jimmy Carter (president of the United States at the time), multiple hostages, men who was part of the rescue mission, Iranian civilians indirectly involved in the situation and Iranian guards of the hostages. This film chose to animate what happened at the rescue mission and they did a great job, the story telling over the animation gave the recreation of the event such a vivid feeling, it really made it feel like they filmed the actual rescue mission. Interviews of the people involved in the situation were well done and helped to make the story that much better. Good film.
Blackfish (2013)
Bean Burrito
Presents a valid and heartfelt argument about how Orcas belong in the wild and is inhumane to keep in captivity. As I am little researched on the topic, I am aware some information may have been left out about Orcas interaction with people in the wild. The documentary was insightful on the side of Orcas not belonging in the wild, for example about all of the incidents with people and Orcas. As well, about how SeaWorld has been treating these Orcas. No solutions were presented about what should happen to the Orcas, leaves a lot of room for interpretation. The narration across the entire film is very heartfelt as in tugs at the heart strings and makes for a very persuasive argument. Provides a lot of footage with trainers interacting with the Orcas, and provides a lot of information and footage about how these Orcas behave in the wild and in captivity. Overall good film, and I do recommend.
Shake Hands with the Devil (2007)
YEAH BABY
Great and impactful film. The film begins before the genocide does which helps put into perspective how fast things went bad. It is the absolute right choice to film this in Rwanda and use the real locations of these events. The actors were really in character and using Rwandan actors helped them play their roles to the fullest. Roy Dubois plays the United Nations general incredibly well, the stress pours through the screen and has the viewer in shoes. The costumes and make up were really believable and never was it a question whether something looked fake. Towards the ending I found it a little confusing about where the film was going and whether the general died or not. Editing was pretty seamless. The music was very impactful when he was shaking hands with the men that were responsible for a lot of the genocide.
Schindler's List (1993)
Chicken Strips and Sweet & Sour Sauce
A true work of art that covers the tragic events of the holocaust in a way no other holocaust film has. The movie follows Oskar Schindler from the early stages of the holocaust, right to when the war ended. Throughout the movie Oskar Schindler's character development was mesmerizing and then to see the ending where he saves so many Jews but is still burdened by the fact he could have saved more, it felt so captivating and takes the viewers right in the moment. Liam Neeson does an absolutely fantastic job at playing Oskar Schindler. Throughout the entire film, from the buildings, to the costumes, and to the acting it all was very compelling. Steven Spielberg does a fantastic job at displaying the holocaust from beginning to end, from the Jews being moved to the war saw ghetto, to the Jews hiding in order to not get taken to the camps, and to the end of the war. The film being depicted in black and white gives the film the melancholy tone that it needed. Overall amazing movie.
Shrek Forever After (2010)
Shrek series have plummeted after this work of garbage
The Shrek series is fantastic. A true series of enticing storyline and brilliantly created characters. This movie had such potential following the fantastic film of Shrek 3. However, a new character was introduced, Rumpelstiltskin, an absolute horrid and all around disgusting character who ruined the movie. From the moment this abomination appeared on my tv and my eyes struck his repulsive face I knew this movie was ruined. Although, Walt Dohrn plays this horrendous character to perfection, just the knowing of Rumpelstiltskin presence in the movie is enough to consider this film ruined. It is quite interesting to see Shrek and the other characters in another time line and in different places from where they once were. The humorous characters attempt to bring this film to life and then Rumpelstiltskin gets brought back into the scene and all hope of a good movie is lost again. I cannot stand Rumpelstiltskin's reaction when Shrek signs his contract, his cackling laugh and his toes ripping out his shoes and gripping the ground with such force just shakes me to my bones. This movie is rated a four for me because of the spot on soundtrack music that the Shrek series continues to provide, the amazingly created characters and their incredible moments each of them have, and not to mention the movie just being apart of such an amazing series known as Shrek. The six stars that were lost in my review is due to this horrific Rumpelstilskin.
