Brief Encounter (1945)
Wonderful!
This is one of the best romantic films ever made. It shows a Britain of steam trains, Boots libraries, and violins at the Kardomah!
It also shows how the sanctity of marriage and "family values" were so important in 1945.
Never for a moment is the husband blamed for Celia Johnson wanting to seek solace in the arms of Trevor Howard!
This is a wonderful film, and I cannot rate it too highly!
Frenzy (1972)
Shocked by Strangulation!
I first saw this film on BBC2 a few years. It was on as the Midnight Movie.
I watched it reluctantly as I did not think that it would be any good. However, as the film progressed, I got more and more into it.
To me, the most frightening part was the EXTREMELY graphical strangulation of Barbara Leigh-Hunt. I think that this was the first time that such a scene had ever been shown on film.
I have to say that I had nightmares for weeks afterwards!
The ending of the film, however, baffled me, and still continues to do so.
The Leather Boys (1964)
Interesting film!
This film just touches on homosexuality. Dudley Sutton's character is not obviously gay.
The ending of the film is slightly ambiguous, in that although he walks away from his gay friend, the truth of the main character's homosexuality is never truly revealed.
