Bonjour tristesse (1958)
It's mediocre cinema yet a great escape for decadent viewers
Brilliantly filmed on the French Riviera. The cinematography and composition of the shots is exquisite.
There are lots of negatives for me.
I hate Seaborg's short hair. She's lacks the ability to emote. Her face is the same in every scene. I despise her character and I felt another actress could have done a better job in this role.
Niven's character is vain and selfish. He plays the part well.
The music was generic. A great song would have improved the film.
The screenplay needed to be punched up. The characters had a light banter where they were supposedly witty and all of it was flat.
There were several scenes where they repeat themselves and I was saying "cut, cut the scene"
The end is tragically good.
Pull My Daisy (1959)
A Brickbat Cadillac
The setting is unconventional (i.e a dirty cheap apartment), the characters are unconventional (i.e poets), the narration is unconventional (i.e the narrator provides the dialogue for all the players), the composition of the shots is unconventional (i.e the shot from the dirty apartment through the dirty window looking at characters on the street).
The dialogue is original (i.e "is baseball holy??), and a discussion of Buddhism.
The subtle way the narration echos the objects in the scene is a brickbat cadillac.
If you compare this film to conventional films you'll be disappointed. If you value a different creative mind with different creative methods you will be rewarded with original entertainment.
Baroness Von Sketch Show (2016)
Amazingling Perceptive Upbeat and Far Out
I love the sketches set in the workplace. These usually explore the frustrating bs that occurs in low level office jobs. They are exaggerated versions of the twisted sick dynamics that occur at work.
One might think that an all female cast would use their surplus X chromosomes to lash out towards men, but these four miscreants save the best mocking towards women. I grew up with 5 sisters and so many of these sketches hit the hostile target of female relationships.
Any people who rate this low are not observing the female world and what goes on behind the lipstick, face makeup, nails and perfume.
Kakushi-toride no san-akunin (1958)
Classic Film
Rather than praise the film I will respond to critics.
1) Several reviewers fault this film because it's not as good at Seven Samurai.
One aspect of this film that is better than Seven Samurai is the strong female character.
I love Seven Samurai but it's all men and this film has an interesting relationship between Rokurota and Princess Yuki.
2) With most Kurosawa films I recommend watching them more than once.
Then determine your rating. Since there are subtitles and the stories and historical details are foreign to Western viewers, I believe it is too much to absorb in one viewing.
Any reviewer who rates this lower than nine should be considered incompetent.
Murder by Contract (1958)
Unusually Entertaining for Tension and Humor
Vince Edwards is excellent as Claude who is methodical, objective contract killer. Claude is a funny name for a murderer. Claude views killing as a job and avoids emotions.
The story of contract killer Claude is conventional and added to this are two funny squabbling characters, Marc and George, who dislike escorting Claude around Los Angeles.
There are several contrasts of tense drama that rolls into humor and back to drama. This dichotomy makes it original. The bouncy soundtrack is extremely unusual and add a layer to the film that makes many scenes comic. The film has several scary scenes and Claude is genuinely scary.
A finely scripted, directed and edited film. The acting is perfect. This film seems like an independent film that the big studio did not ruin with cliche and tropes.
The Invisible String (2012)
This film needs another edit
From an overall perspective this movie is wonderful. The film includes a comprehensive history of Frisbee. It includes, interviews with the most talented and publicly visible Frisbee stars. There are sections on the different Frisbee disciplines, Ultimate, Freestyle, Golf, Guts and more.
The film shows the popularity of Frisbee as an entertainment event at the Rose Bowl. The Frisbee stars also toured the USA and internationally.
The film includes sections about the evolution of Frisbee design.
My criticism of the film is that it is about 15 minutes too long and the film is in love with itself.
This is what they should cut.
1) The whole section of the Bud Light Team. Especially, 'Crazy' John Brooks, I do not care that his team mates, forced him to move to Santa Barbara. The commercialism contradicts the narrative of Frisbee as spiritual activity.
2) There were too many interviews where the Frisbee player says, "everybody loves us", "it is spiritual" "it is an art form". You can find people in every sport, skiing, surfing, cycling who say this. Computer programmers say their activity is spiritual. Get over yourself. I realize that these guys and girls have a deep love for the sport, however, when you compare this love to spirituality, you are taking a leap and comparing Frisbee on the same scale as Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam. This is called hyperbole.
3) The guy who was into ballet Frisbee is an eccentric, and this should be cut.
