A Good and Complete Review of the Vikings
24 June 2022
A good history of this significant influence to western culture, instead of the typical representation of vikings as foreign invaders. Interesting and well narrated by a wide variety of experts, augmented with characterizations.

Disturbing
28 August 2021
A wife who seems to have multiple personality disorders alternately services and plots against a self absorbed husband. I couldn't get through the first episode. Comedy, horror or tragedy, you choose.

Researching The Mysteries during the Cold War
24 May 2021
For the last 50 years we have read of these mysteries and the military research project to clarify. This show depicted what I always imagined to happen and how the participants reacted.

There is a cold war subplot which adds some spice. I was disappointed that season 3 was nixed. Too close to the truth?

Rat Pack Subset Trying to be Hip
22 May 2021
Groovy baby.

It was kinda pathetic then, and it still carries that "we're so hip, we're groovy" message.

It seems like a parody of a spy movie, and certainly an inspiration for Mike Meyers Austin Powers. Watch it once, then burn it.

Connections Meets Dirty Jobs
23 April 2021
An American version of the popular James Burke series "Connections" in my view, but with the style of Mike Rowe. Nicely done.

Vikings (2013–2020)

Outstanding on Many Fronts
22 October 2015
This show is the best of the best for many reasons. It is based on historic saga, if such a phrase exists. The dates and people and events are muddied with fiction, but we believe are essentially correct. It is the story told by story tellers and scripted by excellent screen writers. I know where the story line could go, but it can withstand some literary license too. The rags to riches story of Ragnar, his progeny and wives and the representation and struggle of Lagertha as an equal in a male society doesn't seem a stretch either. The struggle of Christianity vs the Norse gods is a subplot. Slave vs. free is another. We know how that turned out, but the internal battles they fought to find the truth is intriguing too.

The casting is brilliant, the direction is outstanding, and the actors are exciting and fresh. The locations are Nordic and British with recent forays into France.

The whole premise of Vikings revolves around the world as the Vikings of their age saw the world. If is not a typical medieval Anglo-Saxon centric point of view that gets pressed on our history. The Brits were not always the good guys, and the Viking raiders the evil pillage and rape scoundrels. The Vikings do good and evil things, but their point of view blurs the line too, as it does in other European societies. Above all, it reminds us that if you have European roots, they are derived from a blend of these cultures and not the pure blood fantasy that history tends to represent.

Chrisley Knows Best (2014–2023)

Another Rich A-hole and his dysfunctional family
22 October 2015
I don't understand the fascination with watching people who have gained wealth through their dysfunctional ways. Christley is irritating and the whole show is irritating. It is clearly an attempt to springboard off the Kardashian or Osbourne or Simmons reality junk programming.

There is no story, there is no acting, the characters are unlikable and self absorbed and neurotic. It is not therapeutic or redeeming for the Christleys nor the audience, it is the epitome of TV as a vast wasteland.

If this is what keeps you going to watch this dribble, enjoy. I have better uses of my time, like watching paint dry.

Burn Notice (2007–2013)

I look forward to this
3 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe my expectations were low, but I have been delighted on every episode of this series. I suppose it could degrade into the same simple plot every show, but the twists they have taken on each show are captivating.

This is a modern day McGiver. Yeah, I liked that show too. Certainly there are key aspects to every show and that formula can get old: - Find out why he was burned. We get a little closer each week - Find out what torment he inflicts on those that burn him. I still chuckle at stuff like the Libyans sending fruit baskets to the spooks. - Intermix it with need to work and earn some money...by doing the craft he knows - And who are really his friends? What part did they play in this?

The neat part is that you already know that when this current plot plays out, these excellent writers could re-purpose the leads to do something else; maybe actually work for the spooks again, maybe freelance for someone else, maybe go straight and get pulled into situations where their skills are leveraged again.

I like the casting. Fiona is perfect, Bruce Campbell is perfect in his role, the lead character of Michael Weston seems a little gay to me with a hot-tie like Fiona pulling at his crank, but he does it fairly well.

I like it. even the voice overs.
